well .. maybe .. or it's just a symptom

A symptom of what? Potentially giving me cancer?

If the display causes more trouble I give it to apple and theyll also be more likely to give a crap, no one loses.

Just potentially give you more problems in the future when you can't replace it but only repair.. but it's just my opinion

So here I am preparing to dump the 2nd Penryn MBP. I am soooo MAD
I have to transfer ALL (95 GB) my data again. I took so much time to set up this second MBP (replacement of the 1st one with a faulty Airport card) and now I have to do it AGAIN !!!
I took out my iPhone and took 2 quick crude snaps before it vanished again.
Here they are (sorry about the quality but you do get the idea...)
Apple Quality Control Sucks !!

EDIT: I am on my 3rd 2.4 15.4" Penryn (glossy). The Appple Store guys were shocked when I showed them the snaps and got me a replacement without a single word. Also cloned all my Data to the new MBP.

Change a new one, but note do not choose the one with samsung lcd.

I got the MBP last saturday and I got the problem from past 2 days and called apple care and they are happy to replace it.

to BASE91 : is the problem occurring with all the new MBP or just ones with LCD model 9c082?

This is madness. Exchanging faulty machines for equally faulty machines? Four or five times? With no improvement?
People say don't buy models with Samsung screens? How on earth do I know if I'm buying a Samsung screen or not until it's to late???
Listen for headphone outlet warbles and other noises???
Watch out for yellowing?
Hundreds of people complaining of dozens of issues...

I have my fourth Penryn MBP sitting here unopened and I am literally afraid to open it. I don't want to walk in the Apple store yet again for an exchange, especially if the faults are like those in this thread, that can't be seen or heard in the store!!!!! They'll think I have a screw loose! This is a nightmare.

MBP 1 ..... terrible hard drive noise
MBP 2 ..... faulty, sticking latch
MBP 3...... faulty trackpad
MBP 4...... Should I open it to find out or just take it back unopened and get my money back???

I would've opened it at the Apple store and sat there for a half hour running it through its paces. Listen to some audio on headphones, run the yellowing test, use a few applications.

If everyone did this maybe Apple would pay a little closer attention. Well, probably not, but heres for wishful thinking.

You are one unlucky dude. Maybe you and Apple just don't mix.

I've been equally unlucky with Apple's laptops over the past two years. And a lot of people have. Perhaps it's not about luck and more about Apple's increasingly poor quality control???

Same thing happened to me a few times now too... Letting it sleep or a restart always seems to fix the issue. So I am guessing it's a software issue.. hope there will be a firmware fix soon. Don't want to go through all the trouble of replacing it.

Edit: Pressing Ctrl-Shift-Eject also seems to fix the problem

we all guess, but ... SOME APPLE's RESPONSE???? A point of view?!

Sorry lazydesi, I just saw your note to me. I can't tell if its a certain problem with the screen type. Knock on wood I am on number 4 and haven't had the problem and things are working great! The only difference was that I went to a different apple store about 45 minutes away.

I had a hunch the batch from the store I was going to were all bad. I mean 3 in a row in less than 17 days...

Anyway, definitely a problem. Get a new one! Apple will only acknowledge the problem after they come up with a fix. Its obvious they still do not know what the problem is.

Now my problem is deciding to keep my the mac mini I picked up last week or return it for the new one...Look what I've been dealing with waiting for the new MBP...

Oh boy, now I am afraid of opening my 17" MBP, only have read a couple of cases on the 17", specially since I am planning to boot camp with vista.

What is the "money back option"?

I have already exchanged my MBP once for display issues, and I will exchange it tomorrow again. If it still is not fixed can I ask for a refund without paying restocking fees?

How about switching to a cheaper blackbook + 500.00? Would they do this?

You can ask for a refund within 14 days of receipt if it's defective. I'd first get a refund and then buy the macbook. Starting over seems better than just building on a problem since you never know if the macbook will have defects too and you don't want to be accused of being a difficult customer.

Have they acknowledged that there is a problem with the screen you had? As long as they acknowledge it as a defect, you should get your money back with no restocking fee. If they cause problems, talk to the manager. If the manager caused trouble, just return it with a restocking fee and then dispute the fee with your credit card company. I doubt you'll have to do that though.

Good luck tomorrow!

I don't know if they officially acknowleged there was a problem or not, they just offered a replacement 2 times to try to keep me happy. (Wonderful customer service!) I think my standards are just too high for the MBP product. If I spend less and get a MB I won't hold it to such scrutiny. Still haven't made up my mind yet on this, just wondered if it was possible.

Which one did you end up keeping? the LG 9C81? or AUO?

Hi guys,

I too am having this problem (see attached image) with my 1 day old Macbook Pro 2.4GHz . It happened during a reboot after the machine had been on for about 20 mins. My display model is 9C80. Is this a bad or old model ? Should I ring apple tomorrow and ask for a replacement ? I believe I also have a slight discoloration in the lower 1/4 of the screen but that's another issue . . .

Thanks,

Charlie

One way to find out if this is a software issue or not is to boot into Windows to see if the problem occurs there. If the problem repeats in Windows using bootcamp, then it's probably hardware related since you are using a totally different software.

If it turns out to be software issue, then I'm quite sure it will be fixed in future updates. However, make sure you file a claim with Apple so that you will have a case history to fall back on if the problem persists into the future (beyond warranty). For example; I had a video card fail while under warranty. They replaced the card. Later, when it was out of warranty, the card failed again. Apple replaced the card free of charge because there was a case history of the card failing. Of course, I had to press the issue... but having a case history to back up my claim certainly helped.

you gave some good advice about the case history, i am glad i called up apple to report it to them. And you are also right with booting up into windows to see if it is software related but what if it is more firmware related? then it would still mess up in windows... but thats a good point

OK, so I am having the same problem with mine. I've got the 9C81 screen.

As far as I can tell it's related to temperature. It only happens if the computer has been asleep for a while. Even then it only happens if the ambient temperature is below about 70° F. I found that if I turn up the brightness to maximum (on battery) before closing the lid, the backlight will always turn on without the stripes upon waking the computer again. I guess when it is forced turn on at full-brightness it shocks it into turning on correctly. Since I started doing this trick, it hasn't failed. I know, I shouldn't have to do that but it's only a minor routine to get used to.

I really, really didn't want to return my MBP because this is the only problem with it. I didn't want to risk getting another MBP with more severe problems. Considering that this problem doesn't seem to be related to just one screen model, I'd say it's related to the backlight controller. Since it is temperature related in my case, I don't think that it is software related. I'll wait until a real solution is available. For now my workaround works for me.
