another impression (short one)

I am a bit concerned about the battery of this thing. It has been at 100% for a while but yet the red light on magsafe would not turn to green. I hope my battery does not explode.

update: nevermind. it is green now.

I read a good tip in a magazine today for clearing out excess in the iLife apps..

iLife 06 applications take up a lot of disk space - and iWeb is the worst offender. In fact, iWeb consumes more disk space that Adobe InDesign and Photoshop put together. Most of this bloat is made up of foreign language resources, which can be deleted. With the iWeb application highlighted in the Finder, choose File>Get Info. Click the Languages arrow near the bottom of the Get Info palette. Select a langauge you do not need and click the Remove button. Repeat for all unwanted applications [I think they mean langauges]. The same trick can be used in other iLife applications, but you should always back up your data before you sping clean!

Aren't I nice typing all that out for you... ;)

First time I have ever played with xbench...

Initial overall score on Xbench for me is 57.50... hard drive speeds blow on my 5400 100GB

Random Uncached Write: 6.68 - 0.70MB/sec [4k blocks]

Xbench Results

Am I wrong to assume that everyone who's computer has been shipped and is in the process of arriving to their respective homes originally ordered a 1.83 (now 2.0) or a 2.0 (now 2.16) processor?

I don't think 2.0 orders have been bumped to 2.16 automatically. Originally it was 1.67 and 1.83, bumped to 1.83 and 2.0 respectively. Before the bump, there was no 2.0 version or 2.16 option at all. 2.16 is BTO.

Great tip, thanks! Another new Tiger feature? I used to have to do this the long way by removing folders from app. packages.

Hey dudes,

Just would like to hear your opinion on the following.

I ordered my MBP 2.0 120GB 5400rpm on February 15th (I first ordered on January 24 but decided to replace the 100GB 7200 with the 120GB 5400). Since I ordered via a local Apple guy because of a better price I can't track the shipment myself. The Apple guy says he can't check it either and that I will probably have to wait for 4 more weeks because my MBP is CTO (because of the 120GB 5400rpm).

The guy also says that all 1.83 orders had to be reconfirmed when they changed to 2.0. He says that the 'reconfirmation date' is now also set as the new date of the order?! Evidently, he must be mistaken!

Is there anyway I can check the shipping date? Or am I indirectly paying for the better price I negotiated???

Just back from the Apple Store XXX

Okay, so I know I am new but have been learking for quite some time here, so take it for what you want to.

Just got done talking with my Business Sales person at the XXX Store (I will keep it secret so I don't get him in trouble). And he said they recieved TWO today and have two more coming. Each store has to put FOUR on display (near the front). As of 2pm MST they only had those four for this week. They update orders thru out the day so they might get more.

So from what i understand, each store is getting FOUR for display/demo and next week they will get more. This sucks since I am #1 on the list at my store and there are two sitting in the back room defrosting before they put them out on the floor this later afternoon.

Haven't read the whole thread yet but . . .

I ordered mine on the 17th of January and it shipped out today. Should be here Friday. So people who ordered them significantly after the keynote should be getting theirs in short order.

Estimated time between billing and shipping?

This might be relevant for 1.83 GHz folks. I think my account has been billed. Had an authorization check a few weeks ago but this one might be the real thing. Now I have no idea when to expect the laptop to be shipped out. Perhaps people on this forum can tell of their experience? Thanks.

What was your estimated ship date?

Before the update and after?

Which Macbook? 1.83, 2.0, or 2.16 GHz?

Those who got their Macbooks or tracking numbers: how much time did pass between billing your card and actual shipping?

Is this the 1.83 or 2.0 model? Does seem rather underwhelming

do you know how to disable that? i don't want to press function button to get expose'. that kinda sux.

man, just set your desktop corners to activate your expose. I have the upper right corner set to show all windows, the lower right to show dashboard, and bottom left to show desktop. Sooooo much better than having to hit a damn key everytime. :)

Got mine... But I noticed a few interesting things...

(1) How do you activate the optical digital output? Specifically for Dolby Digital on DVD playback.

(2) There is a "High Defnition" tab in the DVD player settings. Anybody know anything about this? Is it for upconversion, or is it for HD-DVD? I think this has been put in for the next Mac Mini as a media center...

UPDATE: It appears that they shipped the first indication of HD-DVD. On this tab, they list:

- For Standard Def
- actual height
- disc default
- For High Def
- actual size
- 720p
- 1080i

Hybrid Discs:
Play
- Standard Def
- High Def
- Always Ask

This sounds like HD-DVD to me, although no discs are out yet and I thought we need a new drive. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

UPDATE 2:

Just checked my Mac Mini which has been updated to 10.4.5. The DVD player is the same version (4.6.5) but the HD stuff is completely missing. Did Apple accidentally let something out of the bag? I did notice that one of the two formats (HD-DVD or BluRay) was supposed to launch this week. Perhaps Apple's surprise is that HD-DVD works out of the box on the new Intel products, maybe we all have HD-DVD drives?

One more question -- should I expect PPC Toast to work on this thing?
