I’d satisfied myself with keeping my 15 PM but last night I was streaming a football match using PiP and sending my wife a video from my iCloud Photo Library - as it was preparing the video for sending via WhatsApp the phone nearly melted down with the heat! Lost my confidence with it now so maybe I’ll grab a 17 Pro after all. Anyone else downsized to the 17 Pro? What’s the verdict on losing some screen real estate - is it quite noticeable?

today i noticed the first thing what really disappointed me in comparison to the 15pro - the mic quality of recorded videos is just noticeable poor. where the 15pro sounded full and life like the 17 sounds just to crisp and i don’t understand how apple can let something like this through quality control

I did. Went from the 15PM to 17 pro. At first, it was a bit of a shock because it almost felt like a toy compared to my 15 but I eventually got used to it and actually quite enjoyed how light and comfortable it was. I still ended up going to the 17PM mainly just because of how narrow the keyboard was on the pro. I have quite big hands and constantly got thumb fatigue because of the size. Apart from that, it was pretty good and the battery life was decent.
The 17PM specs on paper made me avoid it at first, but it actually feels lighter than what you’d think and it’s quite comfortable to hold because of the rounded edges + the battery life is insane. If you’ve been a PM user, I’d suggest going with the 17PM

I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, but Apple moved one of the locations of the microphones on the 17PM (not sure if it's in the same location on the base 17), and it's easy for the side of my hand to partially block/cover a microphone while shooting a video. This mangles the sound for me (not that it's all that great but it's especially raspy/noisy when the side of my hand covers the bottom grilles). (If I hold my 17PM in the normal portrait upright orientation, the microphone in question is at the bottom right side grille. When shooting videos (iPhone in landscape orientation), it's very easy to hold the iPhone with my right hand against those grilles.)

the location of the microphones on the base 17 are the same as on the 15pro sadly

do you have any experience to tell in comparison with the microphone quality of recorded video?

Yep was trying to hold out until the 18 Pro, but battery health down to 90% on my 15 Pro and only about 15-20 gb of storage left so brought base 17 Pro silver on Amazon who finally got stock, and it arrives today. We getting another kitten today as-well, so gonna be fun!

I have the 15 Pro Max. I originally wasn’t going to upgrade to the 17 Pro Max, but my fiancé- who has a One Plus 10 Pro that I bought for him a few years ago (his preferred phone) - is having issues with his phone. Sometimes it charges, sometimes it doesn’t. Along with other issues. He didn’t have the money to get himself a new phone, so I suggested him to take mine and I can grab the new one or I can get him the new one as he said he wanted to try Apple out. He wanted my 15 Pro Max so I went ahead and ordered my 17 Pro Max and it should be here next week. Once it comes, I’m gonna make an appointment with Apple to change the battery on the 15 Pro Max as it’s currently at 83% battery life and I want him to get it at full capacity.

As nice as my 15 PM has been I haven't taken full advantage of what this iPhone has to offer such as the high resolution video recording capabilities and the telephoto lens. My 15 PM battery health is at 83% and at this point I decided the Pro series is not where I want to go going forward. Instead of getting the 17 Pro iPhone, not the 17 Pro Max, I chose the Air instead this time around. I preordered my Air and as of today am still very satisfied with the performance of this device for my use case. I don't game and don't do any graphics heavy apps and use my Air primarily as a point and shoot device for my photography needs. I like that the Air, like the Pro series, has the A19 Pro processor although one less GPU core which have not bothered me the slightest and it also has 12GB memory so apps all run very quickly with no issues. Yes the Air has the shortest battery life of all the current iPhone line however I have a few MagSafe battery packs and am also never too far away from an AC source where I can simply "plug in" my Air to recharge it if I need to. The one thing that never gets old for me is just how thin and light the Air is and how well this device has been working for me for my use case.

I realize for the majority of you who are on this thread, the Air is not the iPhone you're interested in, even in the slightest, and that is okay as people who typically get the Pro series iPhone are looking for much longer battery life and flagship performance of the iPhone line. I get it as I have been a Pro Max user ever since they first came out. Only this year I have chosen to go a very different direction and so far have not regretted my choice.

Having used the Air for a week - it is an AMAZING phone. I miss it daily and I believe you will enjoy it. I’m jealous and hope you report your usage as you get it and use it :D

I saw your report on battery usage and understand your concerns. However with that said, long term battery health has never been a concern of mine as I have always focused on enjoying using my devices. I do understand all the shortcomings of the Air however I also appreciate everything the Air has brought with regards of having a flagship processor and memory, as well as being the thinnest iPhone made. I love the profile the Air brings and to me is still a flagship level iPhone even with the compromises people have pointed out.

We, you and I, know and understand that the Air is not meant to compete directly with the Pro series iPhones. It never was. However the Air has a few Pro level features that make this device unique and for me it is the uniqueness that attracted me to this device. I still marvel at the engineering that went into this iPhone every time I pick it up even now so this makes this iPhone the perfect iPhone for me :apple:

Some real Apple snide work going on with iOS 26.1 on the 15 pro, have one for work and its been ruined by the latest update.

3 hrs SoT is diabolical, my habits haven't changed so its the software.

Classic Apple crippling older devices as usual.

Don't want a 17 Pro because its just a 16 pro in an ugly wrapper, already have the Air for personal.

Have to say thats what tipped me over the edge with my 15PM. Suddenly started noticing it getting really hot when just streaming video (or just doing a Duolingo lesson!). I’ve been considering a change but it forced my hand - i accept it could be confirmation bias on my part but I swear IOS 26 has something to do with it.

Anyway I took delivery of an iPhone 17 Pro (I actually quite like the design!) and am enjoying the lighter form factor so far.

It’s much worse on the 11 Pro Max running iOS 26. I have been installing the newest iOS on this iPhone just to see if it could be done. The updated iOS does run on this device but seriously lags in performance . . . sometimes locking the screen up a few seconds before resuming a task so yeah, I see Apple slowly crippling older devices so you’re forced to upgrade if you want to stay in the Apple ecosystem.

I upgraded Saturday from a 15pm to a 17pm. I switched carriers, so the upgrade was free (or really close to it). It's definitely a nicer phone, but I don't think it was a needed upgrade at all. I plan to keep this 17pm for 4-6 years (hopefully).

so after the new device novelty is gone here are my pros and cons with the base 17 coming from 15pro

+more storage
+ light weight (177g)
+ screen more scratch resistant is a welcome change

- touchscreen not as responsive as my 15pro
- mic quality is much worse than on the 15pro
- videos in low light struggles to focus

I made the jump from 15 Pro to 17 Pro.

My wallet case broke, so I have been running my 15 Pro "naked". I had "heard" that the 15 Pro can run hot. I finally experienced it without having my case. I was surprised how warm the 15 Pro could get.

The main deciding factors for me, not in any order:
  • WiFi 7
  • Qualcomm X80 Cellular modem
  • Bluetooth 6
  • Improved antenna design
  • 12 GB RAM
  • Internal cooling (aluminum frame too)
  • Bigger battery and thus longer run times.
  • Improved facing camera for video calls.
Well, that is my justification list :)

I tried the 17PM but returned it right at the two week mark because the differences from my 15PM were too minimal for me to feel it worthwhile. The only other option might have been the Air but it has too many sacrifices and disadvantages for me to go that route so I’ll see what the 18PM offers.

If I hadn't changed carriers, this is where I would be. I like my 17pm, but it doesn't really feel like a noticeable difference at all compared to my 15pm. Hopefully it lasts me for many years to come.

It does not feel like 89% at all. Phone is at 50% by the afternoon.
OMG! I’m having the exact same problem with my 15 Pro. Health shows 89% but it doesn’t behave like it. Any serious use, such as a phone call, will tank it. Today I made an 8 minute call and a 30 minute call. Otherwise minimal use. Battery is sitting at 28% right now.

I have a 15 pro and just upgraded to a 17 pro. There was a trade in promo through AT&T where the phone was free.

After 2 days, I’m not living the 17 pro. It feels too big and bulky compared to my 15 pro. The 15 pro seems like the perfect size.
