I was a poor college student when it came out. Was able to buy a refurbished iPod Touch first gen (as my first Apple product). Loved it, but hated carrying that plus my RAZR around. A few months later, after the 3G came out, my friend dropped his iPhone 2G and cracked the screen. Worked perfectly fine still, but he sold it to me for $100 and bought himself a 3G. Used that thing until the screen eventually stopped responding to touch a year or so later.

Been on iPhone ever since.

The best thing about the iPhone is that you don't have to type at all. I dictate everything into it now, except one liners, and the voice recognition is brilliant - I'd estimate around 95% accurate. I also use it for work, as it's far better than the VR software we have installed.

I have to train myself to use the dictation more often! The only voice commands I regularly use is using Siri for Reminders, or once in a blue moon for her to send a text while driving. Otherwise, I type everything... :(

Got a 3G on AT&T with typical 2 year contract. It would not receive a signal at my place on the east side of Phoenix sprawl. It would not receive a signal at my place in Santa Fe, NM. I went back to Bloomington IN and could not get a signal at my place there. I went back to AT&T and got my money back when I said it would not work in any of my three residences. It was useless to me and I continued with a BB for awhile.

The 4 series worked and I have had the latest and greatest every year since. The last three years, I give my current unit to my wife as I acquire the latest and greatest. She then gives her current iPhone to one of her daughters. Since they last a long time, we spread the acquisition cost over 6 of us.

I went from a Windows Mobile phone (those had promise but MS screwed the pooch with it's development) to the first iPhone. It was innovative but also behind the times. You couldn't mutitask with multiple apps open at one time. That took a while to come to iOS. But I've been with Apple ever since.

i'm glad I have been able to enjoy the transformation that took place since the release of the first iPhone. what a journey that was.

Nothing to see here, folks... only the most successful consumer product ever created

With the iPhone, Steve put a dent in the universe 🪐

I moved from Orange to O2 for the iPhone because it was the only option at the time. Coverage at home was absolutely dreadful and as soon as it was allowed on other carriers, I jumped to 3.

wish it was still on sale...... for $499.

$1500 to $2000 forget it. Android the better deal. plus you can side load apps on Android.

I bought my first iPhone in August 2007 from Apple refurbished. The 4gb model was the cheapest and discontinued rather quickly.

The dumb thing is I never switched to AT&T and used it unlocked most of the time I had it on T-Mobile.

I'm not exactly sorry that skeuomorphism is dead -- that YouTube icon in particular is a real eyesore. But I do miss the glossy candy style of buttons that iPhone OS and OS X had at the time.

While jobs didn’t engineer anything I fully believe that without his push for customer experience the original iPhone would never have existed in its original form and we might possibly still be using smart phones with keyboards and crippled internet capability

Fixed the quote, and at the time he was right. Apple had to do a price drop within a month because it wasn't selling.

There were two versions at launch, the 4GB was $499 (that is the "$500" phone Ballmer was referring to) and the 8GB was $599. Prices were reduced $200 less than three months later, and even more the next year with the 8GB iPhone 3G priced at just $199.

Anyway, Ballmer was right about the price issue. His comments/reaction would've been different if Apple had launched at $299 (4GB) and $399 (8GB) instead.

I still have my original iPhone (Just plugged it in, like to start it up once a year, this is a good reminder). I went in to AT&T store to buy one, and the sales guy convinced me to get the AT&T Tilt (HTC). it had much better specs, GPS, 3MP camera, physical keyboard. I took it back after a week, the camera was garbage to software was crap, and it just felt like a brick. Got the iPhone, never looked back. It might have been less "capable" but was much more usable.

That $499 entry (4GB) price was with a 2 year contract requirement. It would have been higher ($649? $699?) otherwise and that's before adjusting for inflation.

In the fall of 2007 I interned at a big regional newspaper. There were rumors of the iPhone becoming available in my country. My desk happened to be situated next to the economics department, which also covered tech, and their chief editor urged me to find out any details about the possible product launch.
So there I was, a naive and socially awkward 19-year old calling the major operators and even the Apple office in my country, asking them for any details. Of course everyone declined to comment.

Eventually we had to wait until the iPhone 3G to get our hands on this new technology.

Damn, now I feel really old. My MacRumors account recently turned 15 as well. I remember standing in line for hours. I remember turning down a couple hundred bucks from someone trying to cut up closer to the front, and that was a lot of money for me at the time. I was in college and had been lurking following the rumors for years and had saved up to get the 8GB model. When I finally got it in my hands, the hype wasn't enough, it was even cooler than I thought it would be, and I was already hyping to the moon. Not gonna lie, I was kinda obsessed with the iPhone those first couple years. I had never felt such a strong connection with a device before. Felt very sci-fi at the time. It's something you can't describe to kids nowadays.
