I really wanted magsafe to return. I simply don't understand why apple wouldn't bring it back. My 2012 15inch is hanging in there but if it dies I may try to get a 2015 or another 2012.
The 16” uses a dedicated GPU, not the integrated Intel video that the 13” MBP uses. It’s not really a matter of playing the waiting game. Video producers face a real bottle neck with today’s Coffee Lake processors. Ice Lake promises dramatic improvements for video editors. That‘s certainly, for us, worth waiting for.
Right, for most tasks. But Ice Lake offers more graphic speed (increasingly important) for crunching 4K video. And it’s optimized for H265 4K — meaning, among other things, faster color correction and rendering. If you’re into 4K video, Ice Lake is definitely worth waiting for. If you’re not into cut-edge video, Ice Lake isn’t so important.
Ice Lake should run cooler with its 10mm architecture. Coupled with the new and better thermals of the 16in MacBook Pro, there should be less throttling, and that sucker should really fly for all processor-intensive tasks.
Long time I don't participate in a post (does't mean I don't like this site, I like it a lot)
Apple never let me down in almost any launch of new product to replace the old one. This one is not exception. Very great new feature.
However,
Well... if I ever have the right to navigate some aspect of the new product development (just in my little dream, of course), I would try to make the current MacBook Pro lighter and smaller. Reason is I often move my Macbook a lot. (lol I m too selfish, improve just for me
) The previous generation have an improvement of reducing 10% weight compare to the old one. When this new MacBook Pro come out, I would also expect of another improvement of about 10% again. So it would be about 1.65kg ~ 3.6 lb . But... OUCH ! ! ! Seeing the new weight like a punch in my head, and my heart lol. 2kg. But it is what it is. I can't change.
My little boy that I use every days, even every hours is a 15 inch late 2013 (old USB port) and I really love it. Been waiting to make a big jump to skip 1 generation (Touch Bar) to go for this new one 16 inch. But the weight just make me stand back and thing again.
All good points. Who knows? Right now I’m using my iPad Pro 2018’s ARM chip, and it mops the floor with my Macbook Pro editing 4K video. It’s wild to think that a MacBook Pro is playing catch-up to an iPad for editing video ...Wouldn't this would only be a major benefit for MBP 13" (14"!?) laptops with no discrete GPU? Surely today's AMD Radeon Pro 5500M in the MPB 16" will wipe the floor with Intel's forthcoming Ice Lake chips – so even if we had Ice Lake in today's MPB 16" no one would use its video crunching abilities?
I don’t need one but I want to buy one, even just as a way to thank Apple for caring about the MacBook again
So it IS Apple who is making the decision to hold off and not Intel. The technology is available now.Apple is apparently waiting for Intel 10th gen CPUs, which include integrated support for WiFi 6. Anyone who thinks they need it should not buy the 2019 16”.
If Apple does a 2020 summer/ fall refresh with Comet Lake the 16” will have it.
I don't understand the continued obsession with magsafe in a day where you can charge from a ubiquitous USB port. Apple is 100% right to nix it.I really wanted magsafe to return. I never said it wasn’t lol. Of course the technology is available now, Apple has it on iPhone 11. But no, Intel doesn’t offer it on the 9th gen CPUs.So it IS Apple who is making the decision to hold off and not Intel. The technology is available now.

Like I said, if you think you need it, don’t buy the 2019 16” MBP. There are some nice PCs you can buy, that might be your best option.

They won't bring it back because:
1) It's a dedicated port.
2) It added cost and weight to the machine.
3) It caused way too many customer service cases (dirty ports, broken chargers).
Consumers shouldn't want it back because:
1) The chargers were proprietary, fragile, and expensive.
2) It was only on one side of the machine.
3) You can add it back for $20 with an adapter if you really want it.
I have a WIFI 6 router and yes it would have been nice to have it but it did not have me hold back. Most users only connect to the Internet so having a super duper fast WIFI connection would be cool, it is not a show stopper. It has DFS channels which you still has a great speed with WIFI and you get a less crowded DFS WIFI channels. Will get it on my next Macbook Pro in 5 to 6 years or if I want it bad enough i will just get a external adapter 3 years down the road or more.
Why though? What makes it better? Just curious to hear an explanation.
It's Apple's implementation overall that makes it unavailable. Putting the blame on Intel seems to shift the blame. It's unreasonable to expect Intel to have the technology, which is rather new in final format, to be in the current CPUs. Apple sticking soldered on components and not offering a M2 slot for WIFI is on Apple not Intel.I never said it wasn’t lol. Of course the technology is available now, Apple has it on iPhone 11. At some point MagSafe might return but don't count on it anytime soon. USB-C charging is here to stay.I really wanted magsafe to return. I simply don't understand why apple wouldn't bring it back. My 2012 15inch is hanging in there but if it dies I may try to get a 2015 or another 2012.
It has 4 USB3 ports, they also do TB3!I'm still rockin my mid-2009 13-inch MBP. It's 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 8GB ram, Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics, 1Tb SSD, and beautiful chicklet keys. This machine is still amazing and has PORTS GALORE. Apple offered me $40 trade-in for it. Haha! no.
This 16" MBP is a good move in the right direction though. Bring back MagSafe, illuminated apple logo, and at least one USB3 port and you'll get my money.
MagSafe won't be back unless they can make it work with USB-C. The Apple logo is cosmetic and serves no actual function. USB-C is backwards compatible with USB3.I'm still rockin my mid-2009 13-inch MBP. It's 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 8GB ram, Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics, 1Tb SSD, and beautiful chicklet keys. screen sizes are always reported in inches no matter the country, unless it’s France where it’s the law.On the German Apple site they list it as the 16" MBP. Shouldn't they use metric and call it the 41cm MBP?
Apple store in Cincinnati had them on display, I tried. And then pulled the trigger.Do they have them on display? I’d like to try out the keyboard before I pull the trigger.
How many times I avoided that my MacBook should crash to the floor thanks to MagSafe!Worse thing was they broke. Having the cable permanently fixed to the charger and a no strain relief was a disaster. People wrapped the cable around the charger and ended up tearing the cable out of the charger. Then the quality of the charger itself was poor and subject to shorting out. The only thing good was that at $70 for a replacement, they generated a lot of high-margin revenue for Apple.
