Based on my Gen-1 MacBook and subsequent 2017 MacBook Pro, I wouldn't trust this new entry. Sure, the paper specs look impressive, but after three keyboard failures, and Apple's apparent abandonment of product durability testing, no thanks. Yes, I realize they moved away from the butterfly keyboard, but that doesn't mean they tested the new keyboard beyond what the CAD drawing shows as a theoretical improvement. I posted a more comprehensive assessment of Dan's YT linked review.

Very excited to receive mine. Ordered day 1 with delivery date of Dec 2. Upgraded to get the 64 GB of RAM and 8 GB of GPU memory. Two things I rely heavily on as a video editor and motion designer. The two extra cores of CPU power will be a nice little treat as well (coming off of a 6-core). Went with 2TB internal as I use external SSDs for most work nowadays since I’m shifting between machines a lot. Will be selling my 2018 Pro to a coworker.

I got the 2018 6-core in April of this year and said the only reason I’d upgrade that is if they released a model with 64 GB of RAM... and sure enough, they did! The 16” screen size boost is nice, but not at all my reason for updating, just an added perk. Thrilled to get work done on this. Let’s hope it doesn’t fail under pressure!

Do they have them on display? I’d like to try out the keyboard before I pull the trigger.

I wouldn't doubt it at all, as it is replacing the discontinued 15" line. No point in them showing off a laptop they don't sell anymore, and not showing off the model they do.

I'm curious to try one out over the weekend.

I can hold out till May. Faster processsor, and maybe a newer family of processor. Where’s Ice Lake?
Encryption, video compression, and machine learning tasks should execute a lot faster […]
Quick Sync video compressions is more than 30 percent faster, as is AES encryption and other tests optimized for every wide vector operations.
If Apple puts these chips in a MacBook, we expect most day-to-day tasks to feel about the same as the current generation, but compressing or decompressing large files and encoding video to certain formats should be a lot speedier.
Graphics performance, too, should be impressive.
On the graphics side, Intel’s 10th-generation processors deliver incredible gains. In several synthetic benchmark tests, the new Ice Lake chips delivered around double the performance of the Whiskey Lake generation, and even managed to get close to ultra-low-power GeForce MX 510 running at a 10-watt configuration.
Real-world game tests using World of Tanks Encore and Counter-Strike: GOdon’t show quite that same performance gap, but the new chips still deliver a greater than 50 percent boost in real-world graphics performance […]
MacBooks built with Ice Lake CPUs should be all ready for that new Pro Display XDR monitor. The graphics engine has three display pipes that support DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and HDMI 2.08, plus HDR10 and Dolby Vision. You’ll be able to hook up three simultaneous 4K displays at 120Hz, a pair of 5K displays at 60Hz, or a single 8K display at 30Hz.

The only bad news is the chips won’t hit the market until the last quarter of the year, meaning we likely won’t see them in the anticipated 16-inch MacBook Pro this year.

What is your configuration? I went with 1TB system and upgraded to 32GB. Delivery is December 7, or later
My config is i9 2.3GHz, 32GB RAM and a 2TB ssd harddrive. I was thinking of 4TB harddrive but the price increase is heavy and honestly speaking I plan to use external harddrives anyway so I guess the2TB are enough for my purpose (manly audio). Where are you from? Are you in the US?

Let's also remember Jobs did not want the App Store for the iPhone. He said all apps for the iPhone would be built by Apple. Jobs also told we us were holding our iPhone 4's wrong, aka "AntennaGate". That was my last iPhone.

Also for investors, Jobs was a disaster on Apple stock, sort of. He drove the price down so far before he was fired that I picked up a lot for cheap. And today those shares are worth a lot.

Jobs did a lot of great things, but I think people's memories are a little clouded by time.

That’s sort of my thought as well.
I fully expect these to get spec bumped next year...

In any case it would be prudent to wait for a sale since this is just how Apple pricing rolls now.

(Not direct, but from most everywhere else that sells their stuff)

Really that extra $100 is going to break you on a $3800 computer?
Just check the Geekbench on the i9 2.3GHz and 2.4GHz. It's really not worth the extra money in my opinion. Of course it's just 200 Euro increase but I'm still puzzled why Apple is charging 200 Euro for such a little difference in CPU power.

Oh wow I don't know why I read it as 4 core vs 8 core when they're both 8 cores, I just noticed I payed $200 for a .1ghz bump.
😬 Well, the turbo boost is 5.0GHz vs. 4.8GHz so there’s that.

But with the improved cooling, especially at less than 100% load we might end up being surprised. The thermal performance hasn’t been characterized, it really is workload specific. For instance we may find out the 2.4/5.0 will hangout at 3.4 where the 2.3/4.8 will be 3.0 or 3.2 Or there may basically be no difference.

Can’t say yet, maybe it’ll turn out to be a happy mistake... glass half full and all :)

I am in the US. I guess the guy at the Apple Store was not kidding when he said these things are popular. I just ordered yesterday.

Worse thing was they broke. Having the cable permanently fixed to the charger and a no strain relief was a disaster. People wrapped the cable around the charger and ended up tearing the cable out of the charger.
I do remember this! I remember seeing one of the round laptop chargers with the Apple logo on it which I think was likely much better at retaining the integrity of the cord. Hmmm, Now I want to buy one and see if I can jam sone GaN internals into it without killing myself LOL

They make this WAY too easy to buy. I ordered the 8 core 1 TB model (16gb/5500) and its in stock at a local Apple Store. For $10 they did a courier to my office in an hour. You can even see the guy on a map in the Apple store app.

Crazy. That’s new.

Now in stock at our local Best Buy today also, at a $100 discount on the $2799 model ($2699). Surely better discounts coming this month and next. 18 month interest-free financing (or $160 back in rewards as an Elite Plus member), also. ;)

If they discount them , they’ll price match you.

Wow, I live in the wrong country I guess :) Enjoy and let us know if you like the new 16" please.

There's always someone who will fall for it and give Apple free money just to say they have the "best".

I have a 2015 15 inch and a 2013 13 inch (old keyboard), and today I tried the new 16inch in the store.
I have never been able to get used to the 2015 keyboard, I make a lot more mistakes on it and it slows my typing down a lot. I actually dont love the 2013 keyboard as much as I used to as now I think it feels spongy. This new 2016 keyboard is the perfect feel. It is quiet, it gives feedback without being spongy. I could rip through typing text on it. I did notice the larger screen which surprised me. I didn't notice the heavier weight - also surprised me. Like the physical esc key and I do like and use the fingerprint reader, agnostic on the new arrow keys as I just dont use them.

Had not intended on trading in, but really now I am... its just too big of an improvement on my personal productivity. Happy that Apple has returned to focusing on the user experience like my original 128k Macintosh did- hope it is a sign of more focused development to come.
ymmv
