Great, ordered! Finally an upgrade for my ageing 2012 non-retina. Now it just needs to be delivered before that one dies...

2.3 i9 8-core, 64 Gb RAM, 2 Tb SSD 550M. £3879.

i have the same 2012 macbook pro. apple trade-in program pays 230$ for it...probably will sell on craiglist hopefully for 400$

One thing is for sure. The 2020 refresh is going to be more beautifuller.

yup waiting for that!!!! not buying 2019

Just got a call from the shop that my 2015 15" is officially dead. Looks like I'm just going to bookend the whole butterfly era. Now to obsessively ponder configs.

Core i9 2.3/32GB/1TB/Pro 5500M 8GB is a great starting point to begin your obsession.

I'm just curious as to why all you guys are recommending the 5500M 8GB over the 5300. Is it for gaming? I game on console, and I would prefer more battery time. How much more power hungry (in minutes please) do you all think the 5500M 8GB will consume over the 5300M 4GB card?

Anyone who ordered a customized/BTO model in the US get a shipping notification? I ordered mine about 30 minutes after the store went live yesterday morning and nothing yet. 2.6/32/2TB/8GB 5500m.

I'm dual booting with Windows via Bootcamp and looking forward to being able to play Ghost Recon without any lag (single player) and Borderlands 3 at a higher res.

So, in summary:

Great

- More screen real estate on virtually the same dimensions
- Usable keyboard once again
- Decent heat management once again
- Base model at the same price with increased storage and memory
- Much more improved speakers and microphone
- Marginally better autonomy

Terrible

- Still the same crappy webcam
- Still, no Face ID
- Still, no SD card slot
- Still, memory and storage can't be upgraded
- Still that gimmicky, useless and uncomfortable Touch Bar
- Still, crazy expensive (if they offered a non-touch bar model though...)

I am also wondering if anyone got a shipping notification for their 16" MBP yet, though initial orders promised an 11/21 delivery.

Probably will be 2021 if the mini LED screen is meant for it (which would make sense). I can see it looking boxier (think Razer Blade) to allow FaceID in the screen section (which will basically look like a gigantic iPad Pro), so maybe even controversial looks?

If I am buying a laptop for multi-year use, I want time best GPU I can purchase because macOS is always going to want more GPU power as the years go by, it’s inevitable.

I cannot replace it or upgrade it, and so I do not want to leave performance on the table if I do not have to. Battery life, while important is secondary to me, as I will have it plugged in for GPU intensive tasks like FCP X or Motion most of the time.

There is no way to know how the 5500M versus the 5300M will impact battery life and I cannot speculate other than the 5300M may get moderately better life.

If you have different priorities then you should evaluate them objectively for yourself. I don’t really think any choice is a bad choice, especially after 400/500/500x GPUs for four generations. I still think the Vega 16/20 are decent enough, but I am ecstatic to see Navi finally rolling out on the Mac.

I order the same thing but with the standard processor. Both the i9's are fast with only a couple percent difference between the two chips. And overclocking the chip on a laptop is asking for processor burn up on the system. I have not gotten notification yet for my configuration, hoping today, got the express shipping. I ordered seconds after the store came up, my old mac pro 2009 tower died 4 months ago, also have a Razor core X coming for a VEGA 64 card i purchased for the old Mac Pro right when it died.

What I want to see is how much the revised cooling system and 7nm GPU contribute to more headroom for either Core i9 as far as sustained Turbo Boost speeds versus the 2019 15” model and if that means shorter export times for FCP X, Resolve and Premiere among other apps.

Congrats and enjoy!

I'm on the fence between getting the base model 2.6 or 2.6/32/1TB/5500 8GB. The base model would be more of a stop-gap that I'd sell/upgrade from in a couple of years, while the I'd hope the BTO config would last 4-5 years.

For those of you receiving notification on shipping...

Did you go very high-end? In other words, i9 processors, 32-64 GB ram and over 1TB storage?

Any shipping notifications on those models?

Yes, below is mine with 11/21 del date scheduled.

2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
2TB SSD storage

Well I have two pending charges from Apple so here’s hoping that it ships tonight.

Here's a quote from the Anandtech article on the 5300M and the 5500M

"Otherwise, while the processing core of the GPU hasn’t been cut back further in terms of hardware, the 5300M does ship with noticeably lower clocks. The game clock for the new adapter is just 1181MHz, 267Mhz lower than on the 5500M. The net result is that, on paper, shading, texturing, compute, and ROP performance should all be around 82% of 5500M’s performance, not counting the hit from the reduced memory bandwidth."

I would at least spring for the 5500M w/4GB, bu that's my opinion and recommendation.

I ended up picking up a base model from Best Buy for $100 off (I think they had 3 on hand). Definitely feels solid coming from a 2015. The slight bump in screen real estate is pretty nice actually. Haven't done any serious work on it yet, but Lightroom seems to run nicely.
