Icons possibly depicting the widely rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro have been uncovered by French blog MacGeneration in the first two betas of macOS Catalina version 10.15.1, which has been in testing since last week.

The icon looks similar to the 15-inch MacBook Pro asset that is included in previous versions of macOS, but with slightly thinner bezels. The notebook is depicted in both Silver and Space Gray, with "16" in both filenames presumably referring to the larger 16-inch display expected for the rumored machine.

MacRumors can confirm the files exist in the second beta of macOS Catalina 10.15.1:

The icons also have a corresponding MacBookPro16,1 model identifier that Apple has never used. The latest 15-inch MacBook Pro has a MacBookPro15,1 identifier, according to a support document on Apple's website.

Earlier this year, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple is readying a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an all-new design, including the return of a more reliable scissor mechanism keyboard, for release by the end of 2019. However, it is unclear if the notebook is still planned for this year or has been pushed back to 2020.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is rumored to feature narrower bezels, as the icons above suggest, perhaps allowing the larger display to fit in a notebook with a similar physical size as the current 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the 15-inch MacBook Pro icon (left) with the icon uncovered today (right):

IHS Markit analyst Jeff Lin believes the 16-inch ?MacBook Pro? will feature a 3,072×1,920 resolution and be powered by Intel's 9th-generation Coffee Lake Refresh processors, suggesting the notebook will be configurable with up to an 8-core Core i9 processor in line with the latest 15-inch ?MacBook Pro?.

A bit taller with slightly slimmer bezels and a slightly larger chassis (i.e., wider). There's an escape key, so that's good for those who want or need it. I suppose I was hoping for something more... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well that is the outside, we don't know about the insides :)

You can see a gap between the escape key and rest of the touch bar. Thank god.
Assuming there is a TouchBar...I don't think there is going to be one.

I suppose you're right...I mean, it's a laptop. Not sure how much you can really change the form factor, at least from this angle, anyway.

Well if the Mac Pro design team, designed this Macbook Pro. It could be the very first Macbook Pro with Xeon processors, ECC memory, 802.11AX because the wireless chip would be separate from the processor board and other goodies that would create a true Macbook Pro model to work along the Mac Pro power house towers in the field or other mobile locations were you need high end processing on the go! University's and governments would gobble these up. Coming off a 2009 Mac Pro, this would be a perfect combo. Portability and power processing to the extreme :)

There will always be new computer every 6 months to a year. So if you need a computer now buy it, use it and trade it in for a new model. If you can afford to wait, that is why it is good to watch Macrumors Buyers Guide to get an idea when is the right time to buy a model. It has never steered me wrong when getting a new computer.

When i worked in the old mom and pop computer stores back 35 years ago, i remember a customer that would come in every fall looking for a new computer. You would talk to him about the latest model and he would say. I read about a new 286, or 386 or 486 processor coming out. I am going to wait. 10 year later, i saw him and asked him. What computer did you final buy? He had not bought one but he heard of a new computer coming out LOL. 10 years and he did not buy a computer. :)

For someone new to the Macbook lineup, what is the sort of resale price for the year before Macbook Pro 13 inch?

Meh. Not a big deal, honestly.

Windows laptops need to get rid of that Windows

Remember to have good WIFI signal you have to have some kind of bezel. WIFI signals do not fair well going threw metal. remember the old Mac books with Infrared windows. It is a window for the WIFI signal :)

That is why the iphones have a glass back, so the wireless charging power can reach the connection.

FWIW, I just installed 10.15.1 beta 2 yesterday & I looked at the Resources folder in CoreTypes.bundle, but there are no icons for a 16" MacBook Pro. Perhaps it was only in beta 1...

Sure is. Current keyboard is the only reason I’m holding out. Well, that and the pricing.

Apple watches sales, if they feel sales are slipping because of a lot of press stopping people from upgrading they can change on a dime. The only thing is, they only have so many keyboards so you can not do a model wide push. So you select a machine that is lower volume but more profit and you put the upgrade there. Plus you have a small number of unit numbers, so if for some reason they keyboard have some kind of hardware problem, you are not effecting all your product lines at the same time :)

Dude, I've been preaching this for months. New Mac Pro design + New Mac Pro insides...

The time is about right now, with all the other components going low power you can give more power to the processor and not having to have a 150 watt huge power brick that everyone would hate to lug around, you could do it with a 96 watt usb C box. :)

"That ship has sailed, been lost at sea and cannot be salvaged. "

MS' new Surface Pro X & Surface Laptop 3 have user-replaceable SSD drives on a chassis that is smaller & thinner than the 16" MBP. It isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Nope. Only by Microsoft service.

I hope they have increased the RAM capacity(to 32/64gb) and switched the keyboard and not soldered the SSD.
+Navi GPU.

That would make sense, They could have a door slot that you could slide in a SSD stick from the side to upgrade it for more SSD storage. So you could have some built in SSD storage and a stick slot to add more.

So to recap, what we have so far:
  • 16" screen, most likely 16.4" 3072 by 1920 with identical pixel density as 15" (which is 2880 by 1800 15.4")
  • Thinner bezel but larger footprint than 15" MacBook Pro
  • Escape key, possibly no more Touch Bar
  • New scissor key mechanism (not butteryfly)
  • Most likely the same 9th generation Intel Coffee Lake processor as current 15" MacBook Pro (so no Wi-Fi 6 as Wi-Fi 6 is a 10th gen feature)
  • 96W charging (up from 87W)
Aside from the keyboard and larger screen, it looks like a minor upgrade overall. Unless Apple surprises us with more ports, XDR, or Face ID.

You think they'll replace the 15 inch with this one and make a new 14 inch to replace the 13 inch?
