Upgrading yearly is only for the hardcore of Apple fans who MUST have the latest and greatest no matter how small the improvements are. You will see yearly upgrades on these forums do insane mental gymnastics to justify upgrading year which is sometimes funny to read. But a good rule of thumb for average users is upgrade every 2-4 years to see more improvements. Even Apple knows majority of their base don't upgrade yearly anymore.

The annoying part is the people with the 16 pro and pro max will upgrade to the 17 and then come back here and whine about the phone not having enough upgrades or how Apple sucks for their lack of innovation etc. It happens EVERY year.

16 Pro for a year and not happy.

Upgrading or downgrading to 17 Air.

I don't need the massive battery, fancy camera features, nor Pro benefits.

Just a daily phone on my belt without sagging my pants down, carrying 2 Pro phones....

Not trying to be a smart... or anything but I am still waiting on apple intelligence features on my 16 pro max. It still does not feel like a worthwhile upgrade from the 13PM (sensor shift, 120hz, thin notch). I will upgrade again once I feel the WOW factor the 13PM gave me from my (10S max).

With 12GB of RAM, the 17 lineup may offer AI.

Loved my 16 Pro but I’ve just sold it in anticipation of the (rumoured) Air model. A thinner and lighter iPhone is just what I’m after. And next year if we get a Folding iPhone then I will be getting that for definite too! 🤑

Really depends on the real world benefits of the iPhone 17 Pro vs the iPhone 16 Pro and what they are like in use. I get frustrated with the zoom capability, so if it is significantly better then that could sway me. Battery life is good on the iPhone 16 Pro, so improvements can be nice to see, but for my use it will be of minimal benefit at this point. Mainly comes down to the camera as the iPhone 16 Pro is still great in many ways.

In my opinion, it's almost never worth it to upgrade a premium flagship phone in just one year. People do it because they want to have the latest and and greatest, or because they just want a new toy, which is fine. It's your money, after all. Spend it however you'd like. But I think that many people try too hard to justify it. Going from an iPhone 16 Pro to a 17 Pro is not a need it's a want and that's fine.

Don't ask me - I am the typical dumb Apple fan that buys everything - to me - is an easy swap with the carrier with no out pocket expense. Is it financially responsible? Probably not. But I love having the latest tech.

Like others, i am on apple upgrade program so i upgrade yearly. Do we really need too, doubtful. But, it’s fun to have the latest gadget and I LOVE the orange that is rumored.

Edit: Yes from 16 pro max to 17 pro max.

Thanks guys, that’s three against swapping the 16 Pro for the 17 Pro.

I’m not rich either lol so it’s probably stupid even considering doing the swap

Just getting sucked into all the hype making me think I need to upgrade and the 17 Pro will be an innovative masterpiece over the 16 Pro 😆
My 16 pro is from last October. Still shows 100% battery and mint condition. I’ll be keeping it. Stopped the yearly upgrades around iPhone 5.

I was intending to keep my 15 pro for another year but recently dropped and damaged it so now considering a 17.

The base 17 getting promotion is enticing but then so is 12gb ram and better battery in the 17 pro. Might have a better idea in a few hours after the apple show!

Do you have to pay tax on the phone every time you upgrade?

Apple did a great job convincing everyone they don’t need to upgrade yearly. Nice job Tim, surely investors are happy about this. Next year bigger battery and special color with more emojis.

Sicking to the 16 Pro Max, really glad I swapped my 16 Pro for the Max version. Really don't like with look of the new one (from what we have seen).

I will stick with the 16 pro with one exception. If the 17 Air does what I need it to do I will be happy with a thinner, lighter phone.

Will make the call once we see how much the new materials allow for weight reduction from the 16 Pro. The Air's lightweight and simplicity is what I wish the 16e provided, but 6.6" in my pocket still looks and feels absolutely ridiculous regardless of how heavy.

No it's not worth it, yearly upgrades are for "enthusiasts" who like to have the newest phone every year. Regular users upgrade every 2-4+ years when it's actually worth it.
This does not make sense, the money that you are “saving” by not upgrading it, its the same one you will need to use when upgrading 2-4 years. I prefer to pay $500 (with trade-in offers) yearly than $1500 each 3-4 years.

I am, but only because I sold my 16 pro and got a pixel instead. I love the pixel software, it is way better than iOS, but there's hardware issues, so coming back to the darkside.

I'm an enthusiast, and my daily driver is currently the 16 Pro, which I downsized to because the Max was difficult to hold, but I'm really missing it, and I'm really missing the outstanding battery life, but that price point! Although I likely would have gone with the 256 anyway so I don't know why I'm complaining.

Launch day 15 pro Max and definitely plan to upgrade to the 17 Pro Max.
Why so?

I got the 15 PM upgrading from 12PM simply because of the introduction of ProMotion (can’t stand 60Hz anymore lol) but I see absolutely no reason to upgrade.

What are your reasons to upgrade a 2 year old phone fully capable of running iOS 26? Just curious.
