Im not even enthused to upgrade from a 12pm to any of the 17’s. 12pm still a fantastic phone, more premium quality than the cheapo recent releases. Every year it’s like there’s nothing worth updating the phone to (there’s not really) or they can’t be bothered.

Music magpie refurb is the way for me when 12pm dies

No it's not worth it, yearly upgrades are for "enthusiasts" who like to have the newest phone every year. Regular users upgrade every 2-4+ years when it's actually worth it.
If you cause the end of the presentation, they’re offering anybody with an iPhone 13 or newer any condition up to $1100 to trade for a new phone how could you not do that? Talk about desperate!

I don't typically upgrade yearly. And it doesn't even look appealing to. What I'm trying to figure out is if it might make sense financially.

I typically upgrade after 3 years, I have an iPhone 16 Pro 256GB. After tax was $1,303.91.
If I keep it for 3 years cost per year is $434.64, not accounting for trade in.

If with trade in for my 16 Pro, my cost is less then, or about $450 I'll upgrade.
At $700 for trade in, total cost with tax will come to $600.

That's going to be a no can do. Figure +$80 or so getting a case. No where near worth it.

I am part of the upgrade program, so technically and easily, I could do the upgrade from 16 Pro Max to 17 Pro Max

But why? It's the same goddamn phone

Very small advancements this year

The better plan? Pay off my 16 Pro Max in the next year through the upgrade program and then sell the phone and put that money toward a foldable or iPhone 18

Although the iPhone 16 Pro Max uses more premium materials like titanium and frosted glass that add weight, it is 6 grams lighter than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That's the joke.

If I upgrade at all, I'll be going from the Pro Max to a regular 17. Don't care about the Pro features anymore. Honestly I was only on the Pros for promotion and the AoD.

I was leaning towards maybe getting the Pro if the antireflective coating was exclusive to the Pros, but I was shocked to hear that announced for the regular 17 too! I want to downsize, so this might be my year to do it.

How is it the same phone? If anything there’s more of a difference between the 16 -> 17 than the 15 -> 16

The major upgrades are in photography. If you are a SERIOUS photographer or vlogger, I can definitely see the advantage of upgrading.

For those of us who use the phone as a phone and want exceptional photos, the iPhone 16 already does that.

I have a 16PM and wasn't really going to upgrade this year. Most years i give family member my old phone. Last year it was post to go my wife's mom but she didn't like it so she stuck with her SE. So now i have a 15PM I am going to trade in. Try to sell for a few weeks but gave up on idea due to amounts of scams. So I will trade in the 15pm this year get the 17pm and maybe sell the 16pm to a coworker that needs a new phone or my brother.

personally upgrading every year now feels like a waste.

You could say that about pretty much every model since the 13 by that criteria.

The new 17s also have the new cooling system, largest batteries which are both pretty big upgrades, imo.

Yes, and that has been the complaint against Apple for years. Their phones are no longer innovative compared to Samsung. We basically get the same phone every year with evolutionary upgrades over revolutionary.

The cooling system is nice. A few more battery hours over the 16, but not amazingly more. It's the same phone.

Now, Apple is going through a 3-year change with these phones. Next year will be the foldable, which is going to be a revolutionary step for them. That phone is worth waiting for. In 2027, we get the all-glass phone with no bezels. Another revolutionary step for Apple.

But for now, the new iPhone 17 Pro Max seems like the usual small feature step we have gotten used to year after year.

You can definitely say the same about the Samsung phones for the past couple of years as well. It’s not just Apple, it’s all brands.

Also, again that’s clearly not the same phone. If they were the same, the should have the same cameras, same battery life, same thermals, etc. IDK what more they could add in a year to year upgrade, they did a lot.

But they don’t. I do agree that next year will definitely have some nice upgrades though! Looking forward to it

Currently have the 16 pro max with 133 battery cycles, 100% health. I'll keep it until I decide if I want or need the 17 pro max.

I'm currently moving to Android, galaxy S25 ultra to be exact. Doing so for the cameras, they are so much better than iphone. Using expert raw, I can fully control the cameras manually & automatically. Adjust the ISO, shutter speed, & focus as i need and still maintain 200mp & 50mp image quality. I tried this on iphone using a 3rd party app & the 48mp dropped to 12mp, that's not helping me control my camera. Also apple will not allow greater than 1 seconds exposure time.

The 17 pro series only updated the telephoto camera, the 1x & .5x are still the same. I wonder how many iphone models apple will go through before upgrading them? I had an iPhone since the 3gs in 2009, moving to Samsung galaxy S25 Ultra is a nice chage.
So for now, I'll keep my 16 pro max and randomly use it alongside my two S25 Ultras.

No way. The only thing the new 17 Pro Max has over my 16PM that I actually want is the 12GB of RAM. Everything else isn’t something I need or care about.

  • The cameras on the 16PM are more than good enough and already exceed my needs.
  • I already get plenty of battery life for my daily use. I haven’t had a single day where I dropped below 20% by the end of the day, and I keep my charge limit set at 80%.
  • I don’t like the new design at all. Plus, there’s no black color option.
  • There’s basically nothing truly new this year besides the usual improvements to cameras and battery. At least last year brought a bigger screen and the new camera button.
So, I’ll probably be sticking with my 16 Pro Max for another solid 2–3 years.
