I have no other reason to upgrade than design. I like how the new Pro models looks. Don't know how to explain it but reminds me "retro-futuristic" feeling with materials that uses, curved corners and that colors. I like it. At home we currently have 16 Pro max and 15 plus, both of them works well and has (will have) latest iOS. So I probably skipping this year.

You and I are in the exact same situation. I am contemplating upgrading to the base 17 by selling the 16 PM and the 15 Plus my wife has. The base model seems to have closed the gap with the pro for someone who doesn't care about the telephoto lens.

16 Pro user here. I have always had black iPhones on launch day for last 10 years. This is the first year I may sit it out in the hope that the 18 pro comes in black.

I’m keeping my 16p I might treat it to a new battery at some point in the next few months, that’ll probably be enough to make it feel like a new phone again.
Honestly don’t think I’ve ever liked a phone as much as this one, it does everything I need it too, and the battery life has been the best of the phones I’ve had.

Sticking with my iPhone 16 Pro here. Aside from the slightly better battery life there’s little to tempt me here. more a case of the 16 Pro already being a thoroughly excellent device that I’m more than happy with than any deficiency in the 17 Pro. I’ve already installed the iOS 26 release candidate last night and I’m feeling happy about running the 16 Pro & iOS 26 combo for the next 12 months and seeing what next year brings.

I am tempted with an iMac M4 with educational discount and discounted AirPods Pro 3 to replace my long serving AirPods Pro 2 though.

I’m not sure. I can likely get a screaming deal on it. And it will be better. But I’m not inherently unhappy with my 16pm. Upgrade every year is a financial thing for me. Since I typically upgrade every 2 years anyway. If it’s going to cost me about the same to be in the new phone as it will in my current phone. I’ll probably upgrade. If it’s a lot more, I’ll probably wait.

I upgrade / trade-up every year to the next Pro Max - AT&T Up Next or whatever it’s called. $9/mo for this feature.

I just pay taxes on the new one.

The main thing that’s making me pause is the new aluminium body. I’ve not had an aluminium phone for so long, but I seem to remember them scratching really easily. Not usually an issue on prior phones where you could cover the the aluminium parts with a case, but with the massive exposed camera bump made out of aluminium instead of glass I suspect it’s gonna get scratched up really quick.

that’s likely why they advertised the Ceramic Shield 2 on back and front

But the Ceramic Shield part is only the bottom half of the back that would be covered by a case anyway? My point is that the whole camera bump is now aluminium instead of glass, and won’t be covered by a case, meaning it will likely get scratched up very quickly.

I'm more intrigued by the iPhone Air.

I don't use the majority of the camera features on my 16Pro so it appears that 4k60 video option would be enough for me.

The strange part is that I would consider just keeping my 16Pro to dedicate it as a video camera lol.

Why so?

I got the 15 PM upgrading from 12PM simply because of the introduction of ProMotion (can’t stand 60Hz anymore lol) but I see absolutely no reason to upgrade.

What are your reasons to upgrade a 2 year old phone fully capable of running iOS 26? Just curious.

Also, my Mom has my old 11 pro max that is REALLY showing it's age now and asked she could get my 15 pro max if I upgraded. So that is the reason I am upgrading.

14PM user here, see no reason to upgrade especially after knowing the 8x optical zoom is in fact 'digital' zoom

I mean it should be a given that if you upgrade yearly, don't expect mind blowing new features. I say this because it's super annoying to see this forum filled with buyers remorse topics like " Who else returned their iPhone 17?" Launch weekend or a few days after with the same complains of " Apple sucks with their lack of innovation etc.". I know I probably wasted my time because there will be iPhone 16 pro users here who upgrade and then come back here with topics complaining. It happens EVERY year unfortunately.

I'm going to wait until march and see if they release a black one by then. Apparently they've once before released a new colour mid product life for the Pro's so... it's a possibility. But I'm not getting any of these new Pro colours and I'm also not interested in the Air or regular 17 (although I realize the 17's excellent this year).

It depends on how you use it I guess. I don’t see how anything that could easily scratch it would come into contact with it often and I’m sure they’ve done something to make if more scratch resistant ie: Jet Black iPhone 7 very scratchable, Jet Black watch 10+11 not so scratchable

As to the original question in this thread: I have the 16 Pro and don’t plan on upgrading. I have thought about upgrading every year so I get a better trade in value for my phone but I’ve decided waiting another year is better. I also don’t see enough worthy upgrades to spend the extra money on (camera is better, chip is better, supposedly better glass, interesting selfie camera upgrade, other than that its the same thing) so unless I had extra money lying around somewhere I forgot about I’ll stick with my 16 Pro until at least next year, maybe even hold onto it until the 20th Anniversary phone…

Thanks guys, that’s three against swapping the 16 Pro for the 17 Pro.

I’m not rich either lol so it’s probably stupid even considering doing the swap

Just getting sucked into all the hype making me think I need to upgrade and the 17 Pro will be an innovative masterpiece over the 16 Pro 😆
It may be a question of being rich, but also being clever and wise. I never got the year after year upgrade for the sake of upgrading. That being said, the yesterday upgrade was very very interesting. If I had not changed my 11 for a 16 Plus this year, I would go for the 17 for sure.

I just got the Pro Max a few months ago with some big carrier discounts so no I'm not planning to upgrade or trade in anytime soon. it's already a lot of phone for me and really using it as a mobile camera when I don't want to drag my Sony

I never understand people‘s argument about buying a phone every year being such wasteful spending. We all have our habits that we are supporting financially. I don’t drink Starbucks every day, I don’t smoke cigarettes, I don’t play the lotto, and I don’t eat out too often. I was on the iPhone upgrade program and now I’m on the AT&T next up anytime my cost are relatively low compared to some of these other habits out here. It is all about perspective.

I'm still on the 13 Pro Max, I was all totally in for the upgrade finally. After yesterday...still on the fence after thinking, dwelling. First off, color..It's either Deep Blue or Silver and - sigh- yeah, a case goes on it immediately. BUT...a case would have gone on it no matter what this phone looked like.

Anyway, I would love to have all the new features since iPhone 14 that this 13 Pro Max simply does not have. Action Camera, better photos, 48MP Photo Raw upgrades...a massive boost from this current camera. Video recording (No idea how better dark video is to be honest, I guess I can look at 16 Pro Max dark video and get a good idea.) Dynamic Is., that would be totally new for me at least. Better battery...right now with a draining 13PM battery, this would be great. Also better battery management, ability to charge to 70%, 80%, etc. Always On display as well...that would be new. And yeah, even this unfinished AI...even though I may turn that off eventually, who knows.

Lot of new features hitting all at once after 4 years of holding off. Would I hate to get rid of this graphite Stainless Steel beauty? Yeah...that will hurt. Either a $320 trade in, or just keep the darn thing as a backup, which I still might do.

I am not pre-ordering, I would like to see these phones in person at Apple Store first, hold it...see how it truly feels in hand. Then I'll make my decision.
