now ive got a mbp early 2011 and i wanna install the full 16gb of ram is this possible (link for purchased needed if so) or am i stuck buying the two 4gb sticks and only havng 8gb? either way i dont mind but id rather just buy the 16 is it cheap so i can have the extra ram if i ever need it?

thanks

You can get 8GB on sale for $30-40. 16GB is closer to $1200.

$1250 to go to 16GB, 8GB sodimms aren't cheap - I'd ask do you NEED it and actually understand where RAM will help, or do you just want to upgrade for the sake of it, especially at that cost?

hey thanks it would have been more a cheap easy upgrade to give me a little more leg room and then a faster harddrive too, so you would recommend the 1333 over the 1600? really if im going to buy the 8 gb of ram i dont mind paying a little more for the 1600 to be honest and i also need somewhere that ships too aus for the 1600 thats where i drew up a blank i was looking on amazon and they dont ship out here its a pain in the arse

1333mhz works in late 2008-early 2009 MBP

Hi all, I am new to the MacRumors community. I'm not sure if this is a little off topic, as you guys are discussing the newer 2011 MBPs, but I didn't see any related threads, this was the closest one.

I wanted to share that, by trial and error, I found that my late 2008-early 2009 15" MBP will accept up to 8 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM. After reading through the earlier parts of this thread, I found that some people had discovered that the MBP's would often support a higher FSB speed than Apple officially documents. Originally, my MBP would only support 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR SDRAM. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, Apple did some EFI firmware updates, in some cases to fix a seemingly unrelated issue, and upped the RAM capabilities without really talking about it. Going even further, even though some commented that the firmware update apparently upped things to 8 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM, I found that my machine also accepted 1333 MHz RAM, and System Profiler recognized it. Again, this is for a first-generation Unibody 15" MBP, late 2008-early 2009 (pre June 2009).

However, unlike the experience of others, I tried 8 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM, and it did not downclock the RAM to run at 1333 MHz (as some said it did for them). Instead, after installing the 1600 MHz RAM, when trying to start up my MBP, I got a beeping sound (I think two beeps intermittently, if I recall correctly). A google search revealed that this may be a code for incompatible RAM. I tried reinstalling it again, careful to make sure I didn't make any mistakes, and it still gave me the beeping sounds upon trying to start the computer. After reinstalling the 1066 MHz RAM, everything booted up again as it did before.

So, if anybody has an older MBP and is browsing these forums as I have been, I wanted to share that the late 2008-early 2009 (before June 2009) 15" MBPs, the first-generation unibody releases for the MBP, will go up to a max of 8 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM.

I do find it interesting that I got the beeping sounds instead of the computer simply downclocking the FSB speed on the higher-than-supported FSB speeds on the RAM, as others experienced. Not sure why that is the case.

Just registered as I hope someone could help me.

Would it be reasonable to get Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3 2X 4GB 1600MHz Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM Plug and Play (KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G) for my MacBook Pro which is the 2011 model, i7 2,0ghz, because I heard that only 2,2ghz+ i7 will take full advantage of 1600mhz memory chips? As I said, I've got i7 2.0 GHz.

I currently have 4gb 1333 MHZ ddr3, but i'm a designer and in big photoshop projects my Mac tends to get a little slow.

It certainly won't hurt anything. There is also a user on Amazon claiming it works. I'm going to try it myself eventually.

2.0 ghz with 1600mhz

I did a lot of research before i did my upgrade anytime i read about someone with a 2.0 they said it down clocked the speed to 1333mhz. but that was awhile ago. i've heard rumors that the earlier built 2011 have slightly different parts than the latter built 2011 so maybe the 2.0 might work depending on the manufacturing date.

i've had my 8gb 1600 mhz installed for 3 months and it works great except that my battery is dying much faster but i believe that is due to my upgrade to lion.

i paid 90 on amazon for the then newer model of the kingston hyper X love it 90 well spent

Thanks, I think I'll go for it at the end of this month and will let you know of course with the results.

I just wanted to report another success with the KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G kit in an early 2011 2.2 GHz model. Installation was smooth and Lion reports 8GB at 1600MHz :) Also the price at Newegg has gone down recently. I purchased the kit for $89.00 and it is now $78.00 a couple days later, but that's the way it goes

Enjoy!

how is the speed in comparison to 1333 - especially in the mpb13, which officially doesn't support 1600 ram..

Is there a de facto benchmark that I should use? I doubt the differences can be measured without a benchmark.

Maybe because you have the i5 and not the i7.

I have an i5 13" mbp and it showed up as 1600 on mine.

This weekend I ordered a mbp13 i7 and I would like to upgrade RAM... As the $$$$-difference between 1333 and 1600 is about 10euros, I think getting the 1600 ones, but only if they work (without having battery issues etc, beach balls, cooling probs, whatever....)

It has been 2 days and it seems to work the same. I feel it is faster but I can be wrong.

There should be a noticeable boost because of the faster speed RAM for Integrated Graphics.

As for some people not getting "1600MHz" reported and some are, I'm beginning to think that Apple has two or three variations of the same motherboards floating around. It would explain why some people have SATA6Gbps CD Drives, and maybe why some people are limited to 1333MHz RAM.

Edit: It also might have something to do with the last EFI update. :/

I noticed a slight difference between the stock 4 GB and 1600 MHZ 8 GB RAM.

My MBP was a BTO and it shows the SATA 6Gbps on both channels.

2011 2.0GHz

I would just like to say that on my 2011 base model 15" (2.0 GHz cpu) I installed G-Skill 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM when it was $42.99 and it recognizes and uses it (to the extent of my knowledge) at the full 1600MHz

ScreenShot2011-10-15at75413PM.png

So 1600MHz DOES work on at least certain 2.0GHz base model MBPs
(side note- my machine also lists both the HDD and ODD SATA ports as rated at 6Gbps, maybe that has something to do with the logic board I have-one that is compatible with the faster RAM)

Just my $.02

Anyone with 3gbps ODD SATA port that runs 1600mhz ram successfully. I BTO mine right as 2011 model comes out. I don't have 6gbps on both ports. So I am wondering if my mbp can run 1600mhz.
