That's what happens when you travel. I have 2,464 in my laptop right now, the pick of the litter, ha. Family pictures - maybe 50.

It will be easier to decide once we know a bit more about the iPad. External memory might be a possibility. Knowing how much memory will be used up in the example of my initial post has been extremely helpful.

I originally thought that I'd go with the 16GB just to spend as little as possible since it is twice as much as my iPhone now. But I really want to use this thing so I've been thinking about 32 GB... I think 32 GB is legit.

I didn't think about that. Since I usually travel for 2-3 months, I'd like to have a good familiar movie that reminds me of home. I suppose Netflix's instant play could also work.

I already sent them email.

People with netflix need to contact them and say they want to be able to view netflix on their ipad and other devices.

Enough of this ipad. Go to the content provider. They can make their content compatible.

I know Netflix has a bigger issue because their contracts with providers likely will not allow them any solution in the short term that will work, but they need to be motivated to work on a solution just not sitting around hoping some day someone else will do it for them.

I don't know if Netflix can help us. If they want to stick with Silverlight they'll have to wait for MS to do something for them. On the other hand, they COULD stream the h264 files right to an app and not bother with Silverlight at all (I assume that the game consoles work that way).

I have to admit my gut reaction was to go for 64Gb 3G version, but then when you start to add up space requirements I think 23GB would be sufficient and then use mobile me disk space which etc to store the other stuff that's not always needed.

Let's face it Gen 2 will be out in another 12months and everyone is gonna want the next version for all the reasons everyone wanted to swap for the iphone 3g to the 3GS with the bigger storage & faster proc etc.

So 32GB 3G version for me till the new and improved model get somewhere close to what is really required.

I'm getting the 32GB. To me its the sweet spot. 16GB is going to be too small for my needs, and while 64GB would be great, $700 is a bit rich for a tablet that is made to be obsolete in a year or so. I've got a 32GB iPhone and still have plenty of space b/c I'm strict w/ content management. I only install songs, video, apps I actually use. No dead wood allowed. If I get bored w/ a game or song, or viewed a video, off it goes.

Well, read rest to see your liking:

16GB:
These are for students who want to carry few movies, few hundred musics, and 20 to 30 apps. I currently have an iPod Touch 1G with 16GB, and have 3GB left over with 20 games, 6 movies, 20 podcasts, some News subscriptions, etc.

32GB:
Basically same as 16GB, but it will allow much higher graphic games to be installed and will allow higher quality movies. If you like watching movies (20!!!!!), then I would say you can't guarantee high quality 720p movies on your iPad.

64GB:
This is for people who travel a lot since its got 10 hours of battery (all models surely do the same, and 3G would be awesome), and can store as many data as you want.

Haha, I have 28,997 RAW files on my MBP. Don't even ask about other formats! I also haven't taken a whole lot of photos in the last year. Not even half what I normally do. Been too busy!

I love traveling, though I haven't as much lately. Sad.

I really think the iPad will be great for storing and organizing photos to show people. I love the interface and picture frame feature. I'll probably load my top 100 shots and maybe some family pics, though I don't take as many of those. Pssshh family. I'll also make an album for design work as a mobile portfolio. That IPS screen is ideal for showing work on the go. Hopefully it will be well calibrated and without defect. My 3GS has the yellow bottom issue. Bleh. Why can't Apple get their displays right? It seems there are always bad batches.

I see the iPad as mainly a home ebook reader, net surfer, thus 16G wifi is all I will need.

I see the iPad as a home reader also. It most likely wouldn't leave the house. Being a college student with a high appetite for media. I have a 13" MBP as my main computer, a Mac mini HT setup, and a 32 GB iPhone.

Currently, my iPhone is nearly filled. I have 4500 songs and 2800 photos. I only have 700 MB free (I need to keep at least 600 MB free for GTA: CW), and I'd like to keep a few hundred more MB free. Maybe I should be better at managing my data, but I am most likely going to upgrade to a 64 GB iPhone when they become available.

As for the iPad, 16 GB Wi-Fi will have to suffice. 64 would be nice, but then I'd have doubles of everything I own with me at all times. I plan on only keeping books, many many comics, only a few games, many music videos, and a few movies on it. I can always use my iPhone's iPod or the Slacker app for music.

Me, if I get one, it will be the 16GB model so that when Gen2 comes out I can have an excuse to get the second gen (not enough space) and give my wife the first gen. :D

I'm getting a 16GB for the exact the same reason :D

+1

I'm saving the dough for the mindblowing second generation - - $200 is already a third of the cost of my next iPad.

The first generation one is just to enjoy living on the bleeding edge of the future and testing out the tech - - for the cash savings, I can tolerate rotating my apps, etc off to my computer as I get tired of them.

Most of the space on my iPhone is taken up with music and photos - apps need a relatively minuscule amount.

As I'd mainly be using an iPad around the house, wouldn't it be nice if Apple allowed it to use Bonjour to connect to my iTunes server and iPhoto on a Mac? Would save a lot of space...

... and probably make too much sense (and not enough RAM upgrade money for Apple).

I still have not yet decided on the capacity that I will buy.

I will likely get the 3G model... if for no other reason that I want the option of using the GPS. All of our cars have GPS built into the dash... but we generally do not get a GPS in rental cars when we travel. I do have the Tom-Tom app on my iPhone, but I would prefer to have the GPS on the iPad instead. It would allow me to use my iPhone as a phone... without multiplexing it with the GPS app. Plus, the iPad would be easier to see more of the route with more clarity.

The one downer is that I will likely waterfall my first iPad to my wife once the Gen 2 arrives... and I do not think she would ever use it outside of the house.

Hmm well my Dad's MBP has more than 5000 songs, 1000s of pictures, 1000s of documents, and its using 24GB... So I think the 32GB... But then if your going to load up the thing with HD movies maybe the 64GB...:D

hmm the questions is, How soon would a 2nd Gen be released upon launch of 1st gen!

I'm still on the fence as well between 32gb and 64gb. After selling a bunch of stuff to fund my purchase, I have ended up with more money than originally thought and can buy a 64gb. But I could get a 32gb and get a nice pair of headphones for a good music experience.

It's Apple's sweet spot too. They make the most profit on that one. ;)

How is that my concern? Should I not buy the 32GB b/c Apple makes more money on it than the other models? Should I spend money I don't want too on the 64GB or maybe get the 16GB model which I won't enjoy b/c Apple will make less money? I don't really understand your point.

As much as my wife and my best friend are trying to convince me I should get the 3G 64GB, I think I'm going 3G 32GB as it seems like it is also the sweet spot for me :).

How about trying to find some more stuff to sell, so you could get a 64GB model AND a nice set of cans? :)

Can't make my mind up between the 32GB and 64GB versions, will depend on UK pricing which has not been announced yet, although I am leaning to the 64GB version.
