My problem is that neither my music, nor my pictures will fit within 64GB... which necessitates using discretion on what I sync into the iPad. If my choice was a simple "fits in 64GB but not 32GB" then my decision would be easy.

I do not need to sync much (or any) music on the iPad, because I always travel with my 160GB iPod classic which still holds 100% of my music. Still... my photos will not fit in 64GB... and that is before I include any videos or other media.

My next step is to get my Photos under control. I just purchased Aperture 3, which is a strong tool for managing a photo library. I am starting to organize my many 10's of thousands of photos with ratings, keywords, metadata, etc... and will eventually have a series of electronic albums that will be much more enjoyable to use than my current collection of "every photo ever captured". I just do not have a good idea of how far this will be condensed. I plan to be pretty aggressive in my rating system, because I do have a solid appreciation that "less is probably more".

Since the iPad is a portable device, I am thinking that I will load it up with things I need at that particular time. If I am traveling - books, some pictures, newspapers, a few films, a few games.

If I am home - maybe very little. I have the space in my laptops, why do I need to lug so many things? I'll pick a few books, few photos, games, etc. I may want TV and internet coverage at all times.

32gb is beginning to make more sense to me.

You should get the one with the most space you can afford. And if you have to sell stuff on eBay or cut some extra lawns to afford the 64GB model, then do that.

No one ever complained of having TOO much space. Having too little, though, is a big problem on a closed system that is not upgradeable.

The "i don't need that much space" argument doesn't cut it IMHO. You may not need it right off the bat, but better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

My very humble $.02.

Now 3G vs. Wifi is an interesting discussion... :D

32GB wifi no 3g for me

I'm going with the 32GB version. I have been holding off getting a Kindle DX until I saw what Apple was coming out with. I really need an e-reader that will handle pdf's. Just being able to have all of my technical documentation as well as books in one place will be wonderful. Of course I can read them on the computer but it isn't that handy. Sadly the town I live in doesn't have 3G and the only place to buy books and periodicals is walmart.

I have my iphone and ipod for music and would infrequently watch movies. I like many others on this forum will give it to my wife when the 2nd gen comes out.

You just need a 32GB model without 3G.

Yeah lol you might end up chucking a lot of them away:D

Can't make my mind up between the 32GB and 64GB versions, will depend on UK pricing which has not been announced yet, although I am leaning to the 64GB version.

Then of course, next year's choice will include a 128GB version with the camera. :)

But yeah, like you, I'm deciding between the 32GB and 64GB models.

I don't need to bring my entire audio catalog (+200GB) or my entire photo collection (+70GB), so I've always been selective on what I have added in the past, especially since my iPhone is only 32GB.

I do plan on going with the 64GB version with 3G. Go big or go home. :D  :p

Bleh. Do you own a Mac?

Bleh. Do you own a Mac?

The comment was purely meant as humor.

BTW, I own a Mac Mini but it sits under my desk as my iTunes server for my Apple TV.

All 6 of my other computers in my house are Windows machines.

I'd like to get a MBP this year for my photo editing, but I'm waiting to see if they ever announce an update. I'm in no real rush since I don't need a new one. My last laptop is less than a year old and I just bought my wife two new laptops in the last 6 months (one 14" model for work/web browsing and a 16" model for gaming).

Beyond the fact of how much space I need, the resell value of those 6 models would be interesting.

What's your guess? What will you get for a $499 iPad when the second one comes out in comparison to the $829 iPad?

$300 for the $499 base model and $400 for the $829 all-dressed.

Personally, I have my eyes set on the 64GB with 3G. I am also planning on updating to a new iPhone this summer and we'll see what is offered at that time. But I am looking at something like the 32GB iPhone similar to the current 32GB 3GS

I have been using a 8GB iPhone or almost 2 years now and rarely ever go below 2.75 GB free and I have more stuff on there than I thought I would ever have. That being said, I could probably get by with just the 16GB iPad.

I have also heard that when comparing iPhones and iPads to look at it this way.......

8GB iPhone = 16GB iPad
16GB iPhone = 32GB iPad
32GB iPhone = 64GB iPad

Since I'd like to get at least the 32GB iPhone this summer, using the above comparison I am looking at getting the 64GB iPad. I guess they are figuring that since iPad apps and files will be twice the size of the same on the iPhone. I personally doubt that, but I can see myself using the iPad extensively, pretty much replacing the laptop I am currently using as far as on the go is concerned. The laptop will thus become a "base"

And I would say $600 - $650 for 3G 64GB ($829).

Perhaps you're right, but imho I think you'd be lucky to find someone willing to pay 80% of the cost of a new one. Remember they'll be looking at the second gen models by that time, likely with 128Gb and a camera for the same price point of $829, if not less (let alone refurbs). It will be a hard sell to convince them to save a measly 20% on a used iPad, especially when they're the type of person already in the market for a high end unit.

I believe the low end models will retain a higher percentage of their value, for those people interested in sampling the technology cheaply.

However, original iPhones and iPhone 3G's are still fetching high prices. Even the resale value on Mac laptops stay high. So I guess we will see :).

I think it was bobob who twisted my arm and said that I put this perspective into this thread…

Has anyone been thinking of the iPad more as a streaming device?

I don't expect that I'll take the iPad out of the house that often, so the rest of the time I can simply use the iTunes remote app to play the music from my Mac, which is hooked up to my stereo. Which means I won't actually need to put any music (and possibly no movies either) onto the iPad.

This means I'll only be storing apps on the iPad, and so I'll be able to stretch 16GB a lot further, and I probably won't even need to consider the 64GB version.

Not me. I'm definitely going to use this as a laptop when I go, and I'd rather load it up on movies, then have to stream from my home computer or what not. 3G 32GB for me! :)

Here's me and EssentialParado at the gym last night:

I found EP's idea of using the free iTunes Remote app to be a revelation to me. First off, I'd heard of Remote, but promptly forgotten about it since I'm spoiled for space on my 3GS. Second, I'm also planning on using my iPad primarily as an at home device, so being able to access the full iTunes library without taking up any memory is a boon as EP describes above.

I've already described my strategy of going with the entry level iPad in the 1st gen to experience it first hand and to be ready to trade up to the boffo 2nd gen as soon as they come out. I've enjoyed the touchscreen internet experience on the iPhone and have pined for a larger screen from day one. Ditto for the gaming - - I'm hardly what anyone would call a gamer, but I've fallen in love with some of the true touchscreen based games such as Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor and can imagine how beautiful they'll be on the big screen.

Freeing up almost the entire 16Gb of my low-end iPod entirely for apps (especially without some of the massive ones like Navigon) will free me from much of the app rotation during synchs while still having access to my full music library, so once again I must commend EssentialParado on his foresight.

If I decide to get one which I am seriously considering if I sell my uMB 2.4 then I am going with 32GB which is what I have on my iPhone and it is plenty, plus I can install an SD card if I need to. The only issue I have is my music library which I will port over to my Mini with a 500GB HDD.

64gb 3g for me. Better re-sale value when they release the camera model 6 months later.

off topic.
GO BIG OR GO HOME was the one of the strap lines at a conference I was on a few weeks ago, I hadn't heard it before then and now its popping up on forums !!!!!!
