Yell at the HDD manufacturers for not making a 250GB HDD that will fit in the current iPod Classic form factor.

For that matter, yell at whomever is making the 160GB drive (Toshiba?) for not making it thinner so it would fit in the 80GB case so we would not have to "settle" for 120GB.

Is this the first time Apple has ever DECREASED capacity? At least KEEP the 160. I might have to pickup a back up now. FU$K!

IThe iPhone 3G came with a headset of considerably lower quality, plus a USB cable and a charger without its own cable.

Did you really expect them to put in two cables so you have a separate one for the charger? The trouble is Apple can't win, if they bundle more accessories people just moan that they are having to pay more for items they won't use.

Dropping the 160 is a bit of a WTF-moment, but I suppose the Classic is probably a niche product nowadays compared to their iPhone/Touch/Nano sales. For those after a simple no-frills player with tons of storage there are arguably better non-Apple options. So they might as well consolidate that range. No doubt they'll drop the Classic altogether within a couple of years.

Heh... well, I'm not sure their plan worked, news coverage is rather sparse. Out of all the mainstream news sites that normally are crazy about Apple's announcements, only half of them mention anything about these "new" iPods.

Even on this site, there isn't much excitement. It took a lot of digging to find the "Spoiler Free Keynote" thread (I didn't bother waiting this time; I suspected there wasn't much worth waiting for) which is normally quite prominent and instead of the usual 20+ pages it's up to the dizzy heights of page 4 right now(!)

Depends on how you look at it... you might as well argue that they've bumped the 80 GB model to 120 and discontinued the 160.

I'm guessing the sales of the Classic have been mediocre at best. It's gone from lineup flagship to niche product. It's a brick and most people have nowhere near that much music anyway. I have a 40 GB library and I could easily lose 20-25 of it...

I would expect there to be a separate USB cable for syncing and a charger with a fixed cable for charging. It's what ships with every other goddamn smartphone on earth. Instead you get a combo with a cable that has a good length for your desktop, but is laughably short when connected to the charger. And don't tell me a dock is some sort of luxury item, they included one with the 1st gen iPhone. But then they got greedy and decided to cut corners.

The trouble is Apple can't win, if they bundle more accessories people just moan that they are having to pay more for items they won't use.
They shouldn't have to charge more for including standard accessories, and that USB cable costs them like 50 cents. Including a few nifty accessories is a goodwill thing. They can indeed win, by not getting overly greedy -- but that's never gonna happen with Apple, the most margin hungry predators in the business. They're probably cursing themselves for including a cloth with iPhone and iPod Touch, when they could have sold it as a separate accessory for $29.

Anuba, you are correct in stating that the Classic is niche. Most people have been grabbing the smaller Nano/Mini iPods for years, there have been years where the best selling music player has been the Nano, and that does include sales of other iPods.

But, there are a few people that have a lot of music, and a ton of video. I have about 10GBs of music, that I do access from time to time since I am a shuffle songs fan too. And there is a great deal of video I want to have with me as well, about 75GBs spread across HBO series, TV shows, and movies.

When I travel, it becomes a life saver.

I am very glad I picked up the 160GB Classic when I did, given this update that took it out. And I might just pick up another different color one in a few days.

Yeah, I can totally see why the Classic has a fanbase. But I was talking about the logic behind Apple's decision from a business standpoint, and to me it looks like this is the end of the line for the Classic (the name itself is quite the clue); 80 and 160 merged into a single 120 model... no exterior refresh... I think, if it wasn't for their obsession with slimness they would probably have squeezed the 120 GB drive into a really fat iPod Touch and killed off the Classic altogether. And maybe they will, eventually. At least I'm sure there will be a 64 GB Touch, they just want all prospective buyers to get the new 32 GB model first.

I don''t think its that. I just think I'm getting old and just don't believe the hype anymore.

Its great being a cynic.

Yep, anytime Apple comes out with something new there's always hype. Even if it wasn't exactly as you hoped for you can't deny that Apple's products present more excitement than most other multimedia companies. Most other company's products are lackluster at best.
Personally I think Apple presents some of the most exciting products that you really WANT to buy. If this weren't so you would be expecting anything from them in the first place and you wouldn't allow yourself to be part of the hype.

Oh I agree too. I was tell someone in another thread from a business standpoint it makes sense. No more slightly larger iPod to redesign and no more hundreds of thousands of slightly bigger HDDs.

One size, one case, two different colors, $$$$ saved.

I thought they would have stuck the HDD in the Touch right before it came out, but the only issue that would arise would be heat and speed. That slick quick interface of the Touch would take a serious beating with a 4200 rpm drive in it, and the drive my die a lot sooner too.

I just hope that Apple NEVER kills off the Classic so long as HDD makers keep making 1.8" drives to stick in it, and those drive remain 2 --> 3 times larger than their flash counterparts.

Maybe they could somehow make an external 160 GB drive(!) for the iPod Touch (and iPhone). Yeah, crazy but users who were prepared to lug around the 160 GB brick probably wouldn't mind a matchbox-sized appendix on the Touch...

People would buy it, you know they would! :D

I am just going to wait until the Touch gets to 64GB maybe, or whenever the 32 or 64GB iPhone gets taken off AT&T's network to switch to flash.

Makes sense

It does too. As a 160GB owner/fanboy, I can see that people had a hard time swallowing that I paid $350 for an iPod without Touch, that was SO large and fat.

So following this logic, it's OK when Apple release a lacklustre round of updates because we expect more from them? That sounds like what you're saying. Actually, it's the other way around; when you continually hit the ball out of the park people start to take it for granted that you will do so, and pick up on it very quickly when you have an "off" day. Just because Apple's new line-up is exciting by everyone else's standards doesn't alter the fact that it was pretty much "Is THAT IT???!!!!111oneone" by their own standards.

I just used the new nanos and its amazing! The thinness is not the most impressive thing, its the weight! Its so light!!! I have held air heavier than the new nano!

Well the air has the motherboard, memory, processor, HD etc while the nano has the curcut board, flash memory chip and few other key parts like the battery audio jack etc..

Nyak Nyak :D

I don't think "big" Classic fans need worry- I reckon Apple will keep the Classic around indefinitely until Flash is ready to take over. Either the future holds a Flash Classic or the Touch will take over- an iPod Touch with Classic-levels of storage.

3, 4 years maybe? Maybe a while longer.

Might it be possible that PowerFullMac was actually referring to "air,' as in our own atmosphere?

By the time HDDs are surpassed by flash, there will be something out that is better than flash storage.

The iPod Touch will never replace the Classic. God forbid that from happening!

i just came back from the apple store with a new silver nano :)
i sold my "old" nano
i really wanted to get the touch but it still had the stupid metal back that scratches, so i got the nano.

Is the back so scratchy?I want to buy a Touch but know i have second thoughts...
