Mr. Screen, meet Ms. Keyboard

Sad news. While the infamous keyboard marks on the screen seems to have been largely solved it has not gone away completely. Today I noticed what appeared to be key marks on the screen from the bottom left row of keys. This might be related to my always grabbing the computer from the left side to carry. What ever the reason they were there, but thankfully they came right off.

arghh gutted! flashbios, so i have lernt a valueable lesson tpday do not grab powerbook treat i lighltly hehe so they have gone? good grief have you contacted apple about it not too good for the screen thought is it? hmm ill be carrying mine with both hands then underneath.

listen i dont know who you think you are mate but i put a deposit down at holdens computers in united kingdom probably not where yuor from im guessing mr know it all, and i am saying i wanted to make sure i was first in the list of ppl but found out people had already been putting deposits down for the powerbooks.

Dont jump to conclusions my little friend :p

I'm not going to flame even tho I really want to. I"m sorry your story still does not make sense. A store was taking orders based on specualtion from a produc that might be released and they accuse apple of bad business practices. There are serious flaws in your story, its like me saying i went to the local apple reseller and put down 4k as a deposit for the hopeful 970. would the store take such an order, probably not because taking orders on products that are unreleased is highly irregular. also i think you'd want me to jump to conlcusions then I might avoid the oddities to your story.
Thats all i'm saying. You never addressed the 3.3ghz p4 either...

well im not going to go into it ive herd anothe company called hexel does the samt thing, finds out that a new product will be out soon and if you really want to make sure you can get in line for them put a deposit down if im not right im sure that companies knew for sure that the power book will be coming out and even though released on the 7th jan like you rightly said what stops people who i worked with at the time to help me make sure when the tide turns to be in the front seat to get one of these powerbooks? theres no implications in that is there? and by the way i am guilty on the processor its a 3.1ghz not a 3.3 ghz
i am sure anyway can we leave this conversation its getting way out of hand.

i tell you what you got me offthinking about my shipping order.

for like 10 mins anyway :)

Hey, no need for the bitter sarcasm. A lot of people were wondering about this. It was a constant complaint of the 15" and many speculated that would get fixed in the 17". Note that nowhere in my previous post was anything resembling my being upset. I was simply confirming that there is still a slight problem in this area to those who wondered about it. Geesh.

well i know i wouldnt be too happy about it, its just a matter of being extra careful now not to damage the screen. Seen as this is my first laptop and all.

oh whats the refresh rate on the latops monitors?

is it good i cant remember? is it batter than my flatscreens at 1280 x 1024 @ 85 hz

As far as I remember, LCD's don't have refresh rates like regular CRT's, I could be wrong though!!

Then I see it. The one small dead pixel in the lower right corner of the screen. It's stuck in the on position, eminating a subtle green glow that seems to get bigger by the second.
I don't think you have a dead pixel, but rather a stuck pixel. Have you tried massaging it out? I had a stuck green pixel in the center of my laptop screen, and I got a soft cloth and rubbed the area of the stuck pixel in a circular motion. Doing that in addition to tapping the back of the screen right behind the stuck pixel works a lot of the time. My friend just got a Tibook and it worked for him too. Definately worth a shot!

Massaging Dead/Stuck Pixels

I've tried the famous massaging techinque with no avail. I smacked it up, rubbed it, and flipped it down. Nothing works. But as time passes I notice it less and less. I figure one dead out of 3,888,000 isn't so bad. There are times when I can't even find it.

I think my migrain is returning. That damn pixel is the size of a pencil eraser now.

What are the best massaging techniques again?
Left/Right?
Up/Down?
Anyone with a 17"er had success with massaging?

AS I AM WRITING THIS I NOTICE MY DEAD PIXEL IS GONE! Wait. It is still there.

BUT NOW IT IS FLICKERING ON AND OFF!
Why is this? As I massage it, it will dissappear, then it will come back on, then off again.

I hope that massaging it did not agitate the situation. A stuck or dead pixel is much better than a damn strobelight.

HELP PLEASE. WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Sound Problems

I notice that there is a breif click before the speakers emit sound.

Example: I drag something to the trash. I first hear a click (like the speakers are warming up- sounds stupid, I know) followed by the wild eep or sosumi sound.

There is some kind of delayed reaction and it is very unususal. The delay is similar to the hard drive spinning down, then firing up agian as you need it.

Anyone know what's up with that?

It is normal behavior. The speakers go to sleep when running on battery power. The click is them waking up. There is a utility on VersionTracker that addresses this problem. I can't remember the exact name, but it is something like KeepSoundAwake.

Are you sure the pixel is in fact turning on and off and not just becoming stuck and unstuck?

Maybe you need to massage it more as it is now just partialy stuck.

(Hmm ... should that last sentance be read by minors? ;))

It probably is due to the system powering down the sound system. This can be overcome with a free utility called "SoundOn!". You can find it on VersionTracker.

I just picked up my 17" pb from compusa. It's my first mac and everything works great. My digital handycam worked immediately as did my memory stick reading mouse. Very impressed. This computer is awesome! I hit a little snag getting online with my dsl but after 4 minutes with customer support I am online. I had some doubts but not anymore. Thanks for answering questions if you have some for me shoot away.

Just finished placing my order with MacMall. They gave me a shipping date of March 28! According to their site, "Powerbook G4 17 Now Shipping"

That said, I quickly cancelled my March 1st order with Amazon.com.

Hope I did the right thing.

how do i do it?

Go to attach file: Chose file on your PB ( i.e. desktop , etc.) and attach the photo. You do have to compress the photo cuz it won't take more than 1024000 bytes. I am having the same prob. Good luck!!

i gotta get to school
leave a post
and ill postem tonight!

Just finished setting up the new PB (finally a laptop worth replacing minitower).

One tip to anyone using a dual display setup with Apple Studio Displays: Once set up next to each other, the Studio Display will seem yellowish in comparison to the PB Screen. Changing the whitepoint in color calibration will bring it perfectly in line with the PB screen. Now they look basically identical. I thought the whitepoint on the Studio Display was perfect until I saw the PB screen. PB screen is perfect. Glad I changed it.

Now, THATS screen real estate!

What a wait! It's hard to believe I sent a post with the title "Chloé beats the powerbook"... At this rate she'll be in school before it arrives.

Are there any other Aussies out there who know anything?

Chuck.
