17 inch Powerbooks shipped!

I got mine today and I ordered the 11th of Feb..
funny I never got a shipping notification or anything...not even a e-mail..
just showed up =)
the box is actually much smaller than the original boxes...thought it would be bigger
damn this thing rocks =)

why not just put a sheet of paper between the screen and the keyboard. thats what i do and my 15 inch screen looks fine...its been two years.

Hmm ... you know there is enought of a gap between the lid and the screen that I wonder if I could find some small rubber adheasive feet that would work.

Since I move often, I would rather have a close-and-go option. If anyone finds a brand that they think would work, please let us know.
 
Massive Pile of Crap

So, they pushed me back another 10 days to April 1... I was peeved, but maintined kinda cool. Now, I see my ship before date is MAY 1ST???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I ORDERED THE DAY OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT? Why is everyone else getting theirs and mine is pushed back even further? If this is for real (I've written an email to see what's going on), I'm going to cancel my order, order a Sony, and sell all of my Apple stock. I've been a loyal Mac user for 10 years, and never could I imagine they would do something like this. I'm disappointed, and though switching to Windows would be horrible, I can't give this huge chunk of money to a company that clearly has no idea how to run a business. I certainly can't invest in them as a stockholder... I'm almost in tears here... Has this happened to anyone else?

Yeah, I think it's happened to a lot of us. I ordered from MacZone Jan 22. They still don't seem to know when they'll be getting them. Each time I call, it's "several weeks more". How long will this go on? Steve shouldn't have reneged on MWNY because he could have announced that the PB 17 is "NOW SHIPPING!"

There is no rhyme or reason to their shipping order. So I doubt I will ever order a product ahead of time again, because there seems to be absolutely no point in it when people can walk into an Apple Store and buy one on the spot, and resellers seem to have no idea when they'll get them. I agree, it's a terrible way to run a business. And we see this happen year after year after year.

But I already sold all my Apple stock. I may even cancel my order too. Unfortunately, a Mac is like a bad drug habit that's hard to kick. Where would I go?

But good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Mine does. Even had the marks to prove it. The first row of keys must be just close enough that when the screen bends while grabbing or is compressed in carry contact is made.

Never having owned the 15" I don't know what the problems of this are. I thought that I heard the marks are not removable. Thankfully mine came off with a cleaner and a paper towel.

hmm very interesting. so far my friend and i havent had any trouble. thanks for the insigt though, i will test it out some more and check. 15 inchers are terrible. keys completly touch. the new rubber grips looked promising on these 12 inchers but maybe not. thanks again for the head up.

While I am hesitant to add this, I will sheepishly do so in the interest of full disclosure. I was eating some mighty oily Better Cheddars a day or two ago while working. :rolleyes:

That said, it still would not have marked the screen of the 17" if the screen didn't touch in the first place.

The good news is that even though I was greasing up the entire keyboard with my unfortunate taste in snacks, none save the row with the spacebar touched. So I would assume that people with better eating habits than I won't have anywhere near the problems the 15" does. :p
 
so anyways last night i ordered a maccase that stealthy new black one ive not got my powerbook yet :( so im doing what many ppl may do and walking around with an emty bag, theres like a sleeve in this stealthy black case with a little circle in it that has like a bit of nylon to stick somewhere but i cant see where it sticks? rather odd its like velcro underneath it, anyways my order is still not here and like many others.....i ordered erly!!! and to order a bag yesterday and get it today takes the mickey, if only my booo could be that quick oh well i hope its here in the next couple of days?


Hey how come these monitors on the book dont have refresh rates? how do they work, are they better quality monitors on these books then normal monitors?

The waiting continues.........:confused:

My understanding is that LCD screen technology does not utilize refresh rates. That's a CRT function.

Different World

I just picked up a 17" PowerBook from my local Apple Store after reading all these posts for a while. I love my first Mac, but I can't seem to get the hang of everything yet. I'm working on it. My worst problem is that I crack trial software on Windows all the time before I buy it. The only way to truly get an idea about a product in my opinion. :) Anyway, does anyone know of a particular place for Mac Crackers on the internet? I'd appreciate the help. I can't name everyone in particular, but all you guys that got your PowerBooks before the rest of us did a great job convincing me to make my first Apple purchase. I bought the whole lot of FCP and DVD-SP, etc. So thanks guys.

The situation is Apple have had a small quantity delivered to the UK mostly
just the demo units for each Apple dealer to use these as there demo models.

They are expecting to get more units through each week hopefully but due to
all the trouble in the middle east we have been told to expect delays on all
portable machines! This is because they cannot ship through the normal
channels and are having to ship a longer route.

We will be in touch as soon as more units arrive.

Just to give you an idea! We ordered 50 Units and received 2.
Jigsaw ordered over 500 units and got 1!

ouch, the war is like a scape goat for apple now. Maybe you shoudl jet-set to a US apple store on the east coast. Ppick one up get an airline adaptor and bring it back to the UK.
 
Much to my surprise, I checked my e-mail today and I had a shipping notification! I just ordered it on 3/14 and it has shipped on 3/29. I would really like to know how Apple is handling the orders, because, even though I'm stoked that it's shipping, I feel bad for the people that ordered it on the day it came out*. BTW, for people looking for trends, I ordered through the ADC store.

Looks like Wednesday is the day! :D

my first visit to the apple store today. went to buy some dvd-rs. that store is awsome. it looks sooooo pretty. and the guy there spent an hour teachin me how to use iMovie. anyone in atlanta..check out the apple store in lennox mall. i cant stress how great these ppl are compared to the microsoft help ppl. argh. spent another 2 hours on the fone with them last night when my xp went to my favourite screen. that blue error one. thank god i have my 17" PB eh? well right now i dont have much on it. i installed office and safari as well as medal of honor allied assult and return to castle wolfenstein.

*does a lil dance*

any other suggestions on what nifty graphicy progs i can run? i use xback occasionally...any other things i should check out? im already running konfab.

also...anyone know where i can get map addons for medal of honor and return to castle wolf?
 
Got mine

Drove 2 1/2 hours each way to Albany, NY Cross Gates Mall. Picked up my 17" PowerBook. To my surprise they said they had another one that had been pre-ordered but had not been picked up. So if you are close and want one, give them a call and go get it.
On a side note, does anyone know of any place that has the batteries for these beasts in stock?

HBK (and the rest of you), where are your pics? Where are your detailed reports and first impressions? I can't believe all these machines are being shipped everywhere in the US and we don't even have display units here in Australia. Apple Australia doesn't even have a clue when they'll arrive. It seems like maybe the US market is more important to Steve et al.

Shame. I'm bursting at the seems here! I hope it's here before easter. Even Chloé wants to see it!

i cant seem to post any pics

impressions? i dunno what to say. heres a quick story of when i realized this machine is the greatest. i was in my room, and their was this massive draft, so i decided to go sit and work infront of the fire place. all i did was move the PB downstairs and take along my kensington wireless pocket mouse. :D and after i got tired of working their, i took this baby to the local starbucks. im at starbucks right now and i tell you that every person that walks in is checkin this baby out. i pretend the gals are checkin me out, but thats only to help my confidence. its the center of attention wherever you take it. and believe me you can take it places. it is no where as near as heavy as i expected it to be. ive already taken it to school twice and will probably take it atleast once or twice a week. the machine is fast. when i say fast i mean fast. for all those ppl who say its got nothing on the latest and greatest wintel machinies, just tell them, your "slow mac" will out preform their pc, cuz when our works, it doesnt crash. we save time their. my brothers 2.4 ghz laptop crashes astoundingly regularily.

the feeling you get when you first see it can only be compared to the feelin you get when you first lose your virginity. its like..omg...its here...woo hoo...finally after sooooo freakin long....:D

the screen? stunning. is it grainy? NO WAY. dead pixels? i was forotunate enough to get a flawless screen. i cant tell you how beautiful it is. its soo hard to describe. the pictures dont do it justice anyway

god what else can i say?
i would have waited 2 more months if i had known this is the machine i was getting

oh ..the keyboard feels great. i had one of those natural microsoft keyboards before and i loved it, but this one puts that to shame. it has this soft texture to it. like your pressing silk. well...this is the king of laptops, so if your gonna press anything soft and nice, might as well be silk.

you will love it. LOVE IT. i wouldnt be surprised if you started confusing Chloe and the new PB. just dont try to stick a bottle in the superdrive ;)
 
ok in the latest version of macuser her in the uk suggests that apple were thinking that they were gonna get all of there orders in that silly shipping date set on there page.

So if youve not got any feedback you people in the uk then the chances are that you will get your powerbook at the end of march or even april is what they are saying.....bloody typical!

Apples vice president of asias pacific and america said "i wouldnt expect 17in powerbookk units...until mid march at the very earliest,thats me being optermistic" and said if they get many orders it could be up to mid april, so im feeling freid here, i bet my company that i boought my book off dont even know this!
mac company was so confident it would be getiing them shippped on time

Maybe too anxious due to problems ppl have had with those dead pixels.
