Appleinsider claims that the 17" MacBook Pro is slated for release by June 2006, around Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.

The upcoming MacBooks Pros are expected to ship with "at least a 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processor". The new MacBook Pro ships with a slimmer form factor requiring a slimmer SuperDrive. At present there only appears to be 4x SuperDrives available at that thickness (9.5mm). Appleinsider speculates that the lack of 9.5mm 8x SuperDrives may be one of the limiting factors from Apple shipping the higher end 17" MacBook Pro.

No word on the expected availability of the 12" MacBook Pro, but the 15" MacBook Pro announced in January has begun shipping to users.

Hott. 😀

Though, I'll likely get a 15" anyway during that time frame, unless they make the 17" stand WAY out from the rest (currently on an almost-brand-new PBG4 17" 1.67GHz - thanks, work! 😀 )

I want one!

Hopefully they will adjust the prices, so the 17" will be loaded as standard at no more than $2500, like the current 17" powerbook. And maybe the high-spec 15" will be $2300.

Well I would be interested in a 13" or whatever MBP, but no reports for that yet.
I think everyone expected the 17.
I hope they aren't going to address the small laptop audience with plastic Macbook Regulars or whatever they will call that...

it will be nice to have the laptop family back together again...17 is big - I would lean more toward the 12 or 13...

I'm just happy to see that they're pressing for the 8x Superdrive (dual layer?). That's the one big downside to the MBP. Personally, I wouldn't have given up the 8x to make it .1" slimmer than the PB.

Probably a problem that developed early on and they screwed up.

I'm going for a 17" this time to replace my current 15" Titanium for a bit more screen real estate. However, as nice as this one sounds I'm going to wait for the Merom version later in the year or (I hope not) 2007. One thing that I should at least benefit from is the removal of any bugs that exist and a lot more Universal Binary applications. Still, I'm not holding out much hope of Photoshop, Office or Studio before next year anyway...

Merom is slated for next March (i.e. 2007).

it's pretty likely that come June the whole Macbook Pro line up is updated: a new, slimmer (than current PPC 17''), more powerful laptop, a slight power bump to 15'' MBP, and a new widescreen, powerful, slim, 13'' MBP.

I know they just pushed merom back, but I didn't know it was until MARCH 07! That's a long wait. I want a 17inch (or whatever the biggest size is when they're done upgrading) wth merom.

How soon after the chips come out would you say the merom 17inchers will be available? they might not want to upgrade so soon if they just came out with the duo version.

Does anyone know if its March 07 for sure?

possible specs for this one

two price points for 17 inches

$2499 one (1.83 ghz)
4x superdrive
80gb HD
and most of other specs resembling 1.83ghz 15 inch MBP.

so the main selling point would be bigger screen.

$2799 one (2.0 ghz with 2.16 upgradable)
8x superdrive
100gb HD (with possible upgrade upto 160gb)
vRam of 256mb (maybe a better video card)
maybe firewire 800 on this one since this is a desktop replacement anyway

the point is that Apple will induce 17'' buyers into doll up $300 more to get better system. that's a typical Apple strategy anyway.

I think they'll throw the 8X drive all of the models. As for the CPU specs, i agree with the rumor in that it will be at LEAST at a 2.16ghz processor, so you might be lowballing them a little. I think they will offer more 7200rpm options as well, 100gb doesn't seem like enough for POWER users...though i guess these users would have external drives anyway...😉

Another vote for a 12" or 13" MacBook Pro.

I love the form factor of my existing PB 12" 1.5GHz and personally can't understand people who want to carry around the whopping AIRCRAFT CARRIER that is the 17" !

I suppose if it's someone's only computer it can be justified, but I have a couple of desktops and a 23" cinema display, so when I go portable, I want to be very portable.

Hope there's a future 12" MBP 2.0GHz with my name on it waiting to be made.

Desired specs:

-essential-
12" or 13.x" high quality screen (better than the old PowerBook's, which was a bit lackluster)
1.83GHz or 2.0GHz Core Duo (anything less wouldn't be worth it)
FireWire 400 / USB 2.0 (obviously)
802.11a/b/g
Bluetooth 2.0
Support up to at least 1.5GB RAM (preferably 2x1GB)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 128MB
4x DVD+/-RW slot loading
DVI out, support for up to (at least) 23" cinema display
Line-in audio (optical would be nice, but could live without it)
iSight
Apple Remote (I feel it should be standard across the range, and should be given an open API so developers can code apps that use it, but that's another story)
Existing weight and approximate dimensions

-desired but not a deal breaker-
ExpressCard slot
Optional 7200rpm drive
MagSafe power connector

Sounds good but I think I'll stick with my 17" 1.33 until 2007. This gives developers time to get the bugs worked out and me time to save. That and my current PB will be out of AppleCare as on the end of January 06.

Actually Merom is pushed till September this year, and instead of releasing the full line then they are only releasing 2 models, a 2.33Ghz variant as well as a 1.83Ghz solo IRRC

Merom is supposedly launching in Q4 of this year. Santa Rosa, which improves on Merom, will be launched in Q1 2007. http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/02/17/intel_roadmap_update_merom/

by june... lame. I expected them waaaay before that, especially if it's essentially just a 15" with a bigger screen and faster superdrive. We have to wait until june for that? 🙄

But that said, I don't really care because the 12/13" version is what i want.

I want 13-inch MBP. Doesn't Apple realize some people travel, or even around the house or office a 13-inch can be much easier to move around than a 15 or 17.
