This seems counter intuitive. The 17" is a huge niche market. I've only seen about 3 in my life, and this includes architecture school studios and architects. Whereas I've seen tons of 12".

Either way, I'm holding onto my G4 TiBook 15" and G5 iMac 20" until the intel 12" arrives. (or the 13.3, oooh)

Big difference. the Merom is 64 bit and has 4mb of cache memory per core.

Think of it as the G5 for laptops
I thought it was going to be 2-4MB, but shared L2 cache. Either way, 4MB will be great, 64-bit will be great and by the time my current, (and not posessed), MBP comes around to be replaced, we will have advanced even further and Desktops will be more for Entry-level or high-end markets. Laptops really are becoming more and more standard computing it seems.

Merom is supposedly launching in Q4 of this year. Santa Rosa, which improves on Merom, will be launched in Q1 2007. http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/02/17/intel_roadmap_update_merom/

* T5600: 1.83 GHz, FSB667, 2 MB L2 cache, $241 at launch
* T7200: 2.00 GHz, FSB667, 4 MB L2 cache, $294 at launch
* T7400: 2.16 GHz, FSB667, 4 MB L2 cache, $423 at launch
* T7600: 2.33 GHz, FSB667, 4 MB L2 cache, $637 at launch

Cough. $637 at launch. If Apple introduce that as an upgrade feature for one of their lines, it could potentially give us a possible $5000 BTO laptop.

12 INCH, APPLE, I WANT 12 INCH. GET IT?

I'm sorry for yelling, but I want a NOTEBOOK, not a flagship. As opposed to many other things, smaller can really be better here, especially if you wanna always carry the thing around and use it in trains, planes, you name it.

I mean, the 12" Powerbook is great. Super small but still got an optical drive. I want that. Don't bother making it slimmer, just take the damn old 12" powerbook case and swap the guts. I sure hope to see this think for April, else I will buy the 17" monster when it comnes out and smash windows of every apple store I cross.

Note: None of the above is meant serious. Still I'm quite mad not hearing of a 12" MacBookPro. Don't make me buy an iBook lacking essential features. By the way, does someone know which of the powerbooks sold better? I guess it goes 15", 12", 17".

I want a 12" with a dual-layer Superdrive. Anything less wouldn't be worth the upgrade for me.

On another note, if they bring us a Mac mini with DVR capabilities, I'll gladly dump my other machine (a Linux desktop).

12" and you've got me Apple.

Please don't release it for another 12 months till I can afford it ;)

I would say that 12" is more likely to switch to 13.3" WS and you might only see the iBook replacements follow that form factor at a reasonable enough price. For a 13.3" MBP, you could be looking at not a MBP, but MBx which is an ultra-portable. The x is undecided as of yet in my mind, but you would be looking at prices near the 15" model, with perhaps similar specs too, but compressed into something that weighs around a kilo or so.

I want a 12 inch!

If they had a 12 inch I would buy three! My business partners and I love our current 12's I dont want a 13.3 I don't want a 15 and I do not understand why anyone would ever want a 17.

Please Steve! GIVE US A 12!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, gimme something like that. I don't really mind paying 2000 bucks for a smaller thing. I can still connect the big screen to the thing if I need more but 15" is just too big for daily travels. 13.3" would be fine if it were done right. Let's all send a mail to apple asking for a small powerful notebook.

Joking aside, (average size does me well enough thanks and 15" is my desire laptop-wise), I know what you mean, but I see the line going fully widescreen with the next revisions. I think a lot will also get used to the new 13.3" model, even if they do resist it at first. Remember, it may be slightly wider, but it is shorter and will weigh about the same. It certainly is the better option.

My real concern is not so much that of speed, but apart from the extra Oomp will those new chips be even more power efficient?

17 Mbp

Having used a 17" PowerBook for 2 years, I would expect at least a 17" replacement, or maybe a larger screen still??!!
In my field of design 17" PBs are what we all use.:)

you want something to be considered a PORTABLE COMPUTER to be more than 17''?!?!?!?!? Call me crazy but who besides you would want to lug anything that big around. People already complain about the 17'' being massive...:p

People shouldn't get too upset about a rumor site predicting BY June. BY June could mean next month (which would not at all surprise me).

And on the smaller end... I don't care what they call it, but I'd love to see Core Duo in the smallest laptop Apple will sell me! (Sounds like a 12-13" MacBook Pro, while Core Solo goes in a MacBook or MacBook _____ of similar size, replacing the iBooks.)

And dare I dream of an ultrathin, ultraportable Core Duo machine? I'd even accept Core Solo if it was significantly more portable than any previous Mac.

Larger than 17" would be a long shot, but other manufacturers have mentioned 20" laptops so it's not impossible. I think it would cross the line to not selling enough, but who knows?

They're certainly not going to mothball the 17" (or something in that range). A product line which eliminates all but THE TOP sellers makes no sense--lots of people have nothing to fit their needs then.

20" laptops? Finally enoguh space for good old number pad. :)
But seriously, 20" would be some real aircraft carrier. I don't wanna spread my legs in the bus just to keep it in balance, do you? :p

I'm surprised Apple doesn't mothball the 17" line, they aren't great sellers.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The 17" is in fact a solid seller, and Apple makes more money on the 17" since it is for premium buyers.

The 15 is the largest seller, sure enough, but the 17" still sells well and makes great money for Apple.

Well, I just bought a new 17" in December, so I will do my best to hold off buying a new one for another year.

My 17" wish list:

- Up to 4 gigs of memory
- HD display
- Cutting edge GPU with 256MB memory
- more battery life
- lighter

At least I can dream...
