I Want Expresscard 54 For Sure - 15" EC34 Slot Has Narrow Connector

Surreal said:
the easiest way to phrase it is: expresscard is essentially a PCI slot with 2.5GBs maximum bandwidth.

you can use it to add ports to the computer. there are actually firewire 800 modules just now being released....but in Expresscard/54 as opposed to the 34mm implementation on the 15"MBP.

the 34/54 in is in regards to the width of the port. 34 modules fit in 54 slots...but the reverse is not true.

(i simplified much.)
Given that fact, sounds like 15" MBP buyers are getting a "Lite" version fo what should have been 54 - esp since there is plenty of room for a wider slot there. I want 54. Do you have any links ot info on the standard and the FW800 cards coming out now please? Thanks in advance.

I just found this page explains it all with Google.

Here's an ExpressCard 54 FW 800 card but can't see the port(s) end. Pretty Pricy at $140.

You have others?

Many of you are in a 13 vs. 17 mentality.

Many of you seem to think that Merom is the key to a 17".
There are other things though that Apple could do right now:

Dual hard drives 7200rpm
2.16 Processor
nVidia 7800GTX
FW800
Express 54
Bigger screen
DL Superdrive
4 GB RAM
etc.

Everything can be upgraded processor wise down the road.

There are plenty of options to distinguish a 12/13 on the bottom end as well.

My vote is both by June.

Just found out the reverse IS TRUE Surreal. EC 54 cards fit in 34 slots and only stick out further from the computer than if a 54 slot were provided as I expect the 17" will have.

The card you linked to doesnt work with 34. it says as much at the bottom, but just to be proper;
Look at point 3.

Sounds sweet. I hope Steve is reading this.:D

HD-DVD Drive, Socketed Yonah?

Yonah is soldered to the MOBO on the 15" MBP so that's gotta change for us to be able to upgrade to Merom in the Fall. Toshiba is shipping a 17" with HD-DVD built in so I think that's a drive worth having inside beyond the old DL model.

I thought Apple was part of the Blue-Ray team?

If so, I doubt we'll see HD-DVD out of them. It is not necessary at this point any way. Too expensive and it is not even close to being a standard.

i amend my previous request to include this.

and, as i have stated elsewhare on this forum, i would appreciate 4 slots for ram. it would make me weep uncontrollably for days.

I think a 13" inch would be SO nice. i would jump on...jump on it gooood.

I agree, I love my 12" G4. I'd love more a MBP in widescreen with alot more power.

I really like the idea of the 13.3 MBP. I like having a ton of screen space but portability is key too. With the money saved I could get a 20inch display too.

There seems to be a lot of demand for a 13" MBP. Let's just hope we get lucky!

the time is nigh

I have the money. someone talk sense to me; explain to me that i should wait at least till april 4th for a look at the 17"

i know NAB has as good a chance...but...i ... have the money...want...to..buy MBP now.

P.S. i want to see if the 17" inch gets FW800 or expresscard/54 or the X1800 or... who knows.

So they key to the 17'' MacBook Pro would be not making it a 17''? That makes it more of an 20''(or however big the screen would be):D ;)

So think 20'' screen plus on a laptop is big but to each is own. Also Apple might have trouble putting 2 Hard Disk in a Laptop because Apple Love form over funtion(however Apple 17'' Laptop line covers both well)

Dual dual Core CPU 12" MBP with slide out second monitor screen

Dual dual Core CPU 12" MBP with slide out second monitor screen

That's what I want. Who else wants one?

It's possible. Slide out monitor isn't out yet but...if you're willing to pay the price in battery sucking then...well the slide out monitor isn't totally necessary but...it could remain off until slid out thereby sucking no extra battery. And for dual cpu i'd pay for the battery suckage.

Similar example:

Wondering why so much power is necessary? Because for music running soft synths especially sculpture, es2 and 3rd party soft synths which all generate sound on the fly with cpu cycles, it is absolutely necessary. I can make my PBG4 tap out with just 4 tracks. And software could be a whole lot better but developers can't develop when the hardware is limiting them so badly.

You're crazy. I could run ten software synths at once
on my single processor Compaq that I bought for less
than $400 on Overstock

Even on my Macbook Pro, I can still run like two
or three soft synths in Reason under Rosetta
emulation. It should be okay for you. Sampling
is more demanding than soft synths for me.

he's talking about Logic., different beast. propellerheads write some of the most efficient code in audio. Logic is a powerhouse that, while being pretty efficient, is coded for power.

that dual dual core stuff is a bit much though, i agree.

but they do need to bring me a 17" macbook pro. with the 2.33 mhz core duo. and fw800. and expresscard 54. very little else is necessary to make me happy. nothing i can think of. i don't even want 4 ram slots anymore since 2gb modules are available now. 1900x1200 screen and x1800 would be great though.

I'm hoping for the 12/13'' by June too. If not, I'm going for the 15'' though. I'd be a bit saddened if they came out with the 17'' first. I think that's more a niche market than the other two sizes.

I am crazy

1dterbeest, Yes I am crazy. And I somewhat exagerated my claim. It actually takes 6 native logic tracks to hit the limit on my 1.5 Ghz G4 PB. 1 ultrabeat, 3 ES2, and 2 Sculpture tracks, no effects. I can hit the limit with less tracks using effects or other instruments like Reaktor or Spectrasonics plugins (all AU). Of course freezing tracks is one way out but wouldn't provide the immediacy of having all tracks unfrozen and available to me. The laptop I mentioned would be a dream. All the immediacy, tons of tracks, a true desktop replacement. The fact is that Reaktor is going to just get hungrier for CPU power with each release, Cycling 74's hipno is an indication that plugs that do what you want are just going to get hungrier too. Linplug's Octopus comes to mind. I'd like to be able to use my laptop without running to my desktop (which I don't even want to have to own). I alluded to the fact that developers could dev stuff that currently they can't...like a virtual Access Virus Polar T1, or a Nord Modular G2 virtual synth. That would be hot. 4x faster that the 12" MBP would provide will be a big improvement, but I'm sure that will only last for two to three years.

i think apple is going to wait for the 2.33mhz processors to release the 17" MBP. it will cost the same amount as the 2.16 chip.

This is all getting very confusing.....

Do we know when the Merom will be in the MBP? (skimmed over previous posts and i really dont know what to think??)
