17" MacBook Pro to be Updated "In a Few Months"?

When someone calls themself a 'digital photographer', they're not really a photographer. it's like calling yourself an analog musician.

I don't know about photography but as musicians I'd say I'd highly respect analog musicians. There's plenty of "digital musicians" who can't play s*** and just glue loops and samples together without much talent to produce passable uninspiring music. A proper "Analog musician" such as a Jazz pianist or great rock guitarist can usually always do the digital bit if they're computer literate, but they can properly wow you live!

I've spent £kkkkk's on my all analogue guitar rig where any digital FX bits run in parallel so as not to interfere!

anyway, I digress....

Real Pros aren't anywhere near a forum like this. They're working and they don't care about glossy or matte and they moved to FW800 years ago. The "Pros" here are mostly "Armchair Pros".

Taking firewire off the 13.3 is just wrong, though. Very wrong.

I don't agree with the statement that "Pros" are not near a forum like this... Very UNTRUE... Myself, and most professionals I know, care HIGHLY about the future of technology, productivity, and are outraged at Apple's latest endeavors to take firewire off the 13.3! Most professionals I know were actually watching the live stream as the notebooks were released because APPLE has the power to increase efficiency and productivity (as well as profit margins) by releasing professional products. I didn't join this forum until I was outraged over Apple's recent developments... Because they seem to be focusing on the iPhone and iPod generation instead of US professional users...
A true pro machine would have 2 Firewire ports... 1 FW400+FW800 or 2 FW800 using a SEPARATE BUS for each... The problem with professional audio/visual users is that they stick them on the same bus! That's why we have to resort to esata express card options... A TRUE pro machine would offer esata as well as an express card slot. An although I don't personally care, I know graphic artists who need MATTE screens for color authenticity. Also, I don't believe it would be impossible for Apple, with such a creative-intuitive team to some how offer a second hard drive option.
So a pro machine... 'clearing throat' A TRUE pro machine would look like this...
2 Firewire ports (Separate Bus for each) 1 fw400+fw800 or 2 fw800...
esata port
express card slot
2 hard drive option
Matte screen option
8 gb of ram (future Nahalem)
and possible a mobile quad core (once snow leopard is released)
**one note with snow leopard** please focus on performance, efficiency, and a stable operating system... rather than more features that causes more problems and eats at the system resources... thus requiring more power, more fixes, and a longer wait for a stable system!
I have done my part... Called Apple Consumer Relations Division... filled out Apple's feedback forms online, signed the petition.... Have you? Posting on this forum will do little good... I didn't want to say this but the Apple rep told me... "All they care about is what is submitted on the forms, and what has been reported back to the Apple Consumer Relations Division... they really don't put a lot of stock in what is being said on these forums..." We need to spend LESS TIME on forums complaining... and MORE TIME calling Apple until they realize their BIG MISTAKE and put FIREWIRE back on Macbooks and give us a TRUE pro machine... Most PROFESSIONALS agree with the above! And yes there are some here...

To file a complaint about the exclusion of FIREWIRE in Macbooks you can simply click here... very simple.

How about more than 17"?

Am I the only one that thinks that Apple might actually increase the size of the screen for the next big MBP? I really wouldn't mind an 18.4" screen like on HP HDX 18t.

I can definitely see matte as a BTO option on the 17" model and only the 17" model.

So in a way, Apple's notebooks are a step forward (MacBook discrete GPU, aluminum "=" old MacBook Pro) and a step back (Firewire, matte display) at the same time.

In 2006, when only the 15" PowerBook was updated to Intel, the 17" PowerBook did not get a spec bump, unlike this update. So the 17" model might take a little longer than 3 months to arrive.

Is anyone wondering what they could possibly be announcing at Macworld 2009 this time?
Mini-tablet. Tablet. iLife '09 and iWork '09.

I just went into the Apple store today to look at the screen - it is way too glossy for me. I am hoping that the delay on the 17" is due to keeping the option of a Matte screen for those who want it (i.e. that the 15" Pro = Business User in Apple's eyes).
I have to say that I also wasn't expecting to like the trackpad but it is really usable.
Also, I noticed that the MBP is now very slightly heavier - probably due to the glass. How much heavier would the 17" be?

"In this economy the 17" is dead.(along with the MINI) So is Matte screens and FW 400. Apple goes with what sells. 17" and Matte rule the roost-Deal with it"

That's no excuse though. I'm sure that most of the people who prefer/need matte wouldn't mind paying $50 to have it BTO.

All I want is for Apple to Listen. A numerous amount of people just don't like the design period. To me it looks like a HP from 2 years ago. If apple does anything do the following.

1. Don't make the keyboards black on the 17' or a least give an option of keyboard color. Silver or Black
2. Add the firewire ports
3. Make the Matte finish an option (I do heavy design and matte is needed)
4.Blu-Ray if possible.

Although I still don't like the black border (personal opinion) I might be able to deal with it. Other than that. Are those things much to ask for on a development machine?

It sounds to me as if the current 17" MacBook Pro is perfect for you then. Go buy the slot-loading Blu-Ray drive and you are good to go. Why do you need an update?

Really? What benefits would *you* get out of a machine that supports 16GB? Why not go for 32GB? Do you really think the current OS (don't know about Snow Leopard) is going to be able to address and fully take advantage of those 16GBs? Might be a while before applications can further take advantage of all that RAM.

Have you ever tried running multiple virtual machines? I run two under 10.5.5 (1GB memory each) and I run out of memory...

Maybe I am reading your post wrong but OS X does support 16GB or more just fine.

I've got a Mac Pro at home that has 16GB and it does use all that memory, trust me.

WTF APPLE!!! i am planing on moving from pc to apple and was looking to buy a new laptop, so i was intrested in the 17" macbook pro and heard about the keynote so i held off and now to find that the 17" version has not been upgraded with the new graphics or anything :( very dissapointed ... might just get the 15" model then.

should I hold off or just buy the 15" ????

I really doubt that there will be a matte option. Apple eliminated the aluminum bezel around the screen due to the unibody construction. They couldn't machine out a bezel without either bending the aluminum around the end or adding another part and seam.

Instead they chose to go with the stronger one piece of glass solution. The isight camera & display are behind the glass.

If Apple goes matte the entire glass would have to be matte. This would make the isight camera blurry and non-functional. In addition the area around the display would look really nasty with a matte glass over the black plastic insert.

In order to go matte Apple would basically have to re-design the casing and make it completely different than the other laptops. I doubt Apple will do that.

Agreed!

The new Macbook is the best consumer laptop that Apple has ever built.

While some will always take issues with the decisions that Apple made for the MBP. It is still a spectacular piece of engineering and fit and finish are unbelievable. The new graphics performance and the easy access HDD are big pluses to me.

For the first time you can actually easily upgrade your MBP a year or 2 down the line when SSD drives get faster, cheaper, and bigger.

I can hardly wait for Snow Leopard now! Once the ability to offload certain operations to the GPU is possible this baby is going to scream. Not only that I hear the H.264 encoder/decoder built into the new GPU will really accelerate HD video work.

Just because in your case you wouldn't use all that memory doesn't mean that a lot of others are in your boat.

Everybody who cares go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and just drop them a line about the hot new issue in the world "Screen Choice." If Apple gets enough feedback maybe they will rethink these decisions just in time for the 17" update in the next few months.
Other than perhaps the fourth generation iPod nano, I really can't think any any situation were Apple has reversed their decisions. Remember when the new iMac came out and everyone was seemingly complaining about the glossy screen? It's been well over a year at this point and not only has Apple updated the iMac models, they still have not allowed for a matte display option.

The point is, I highly doubt Apple will ever offer a matte display option again. It just can't be done with glass displays, and I doubt Apple would stop using glass. Glass has benefits over plastic, including its scratch resistance and it being highly recyclable.

And again, I have a suspicion many of you are passing judgment without actually seeing the MacBook Pro in person and using it yourself. I have seen and used the new iMac, and yet, it's a mirror when the display is turned off, but when it's on, it's so bright that there is little reflection. I really think people are blowing this out of proportion.

No GPU update on the 17 inch model??!

I can understand moving to a new manufacturing process and having to do this step wise, but not updating the GPU from the 8600 to the 9600 Nvida makes no sense at all. they have the same form factor and connectors after all. I do not think Nvida is running out of them so it is no shortage, so what gives? By upgrading the GPU apple could have kept the 17 inch model relevant, but now the most expensive macbook pro is the least powerful? Bad move apple, bad move!

actually apple could use beadblasting to etch matte everywhere on the glass piece except the display window and really look great.

No. I have not and I don't think Apple will fill that niche just for the small percentage of buyers that truly need or want that 16GB. It's about running a business too. I hope Apple can balance being a business and what it's roots are about.
