I use it everywhere. It's my main computer at home and I take it every day to my job. Just as I did with the 15".
Actually I'm just typing this with the MBP on my lap.
great. have you been tempted to buy a mba?

I do own a ´08 Air...
Pretty, but too much compromise. Since 2010 I went MBP 15", sold it and just bought a 17".
So I know portable, and I prefer power.![]()
how do you feel about the mechanical hard drive and optical drive in the pro?
Well I am A photographer and the 13 is great for on the go but not for at home PP work..I may just have to buy the 17" and A larger screen for extended work really like the Imac 27" so need to make a choice which would you get Imac 27 or 17MBP with an external screen for home work?
When people can do business using iPhones and Androids, literally a MBP (or any laptop) 17" display is way too big.

the 08 air likely had a hard drive (one much slower than the macbook pro)

nope. there are things that a iPhone screen is way too small for. there is no way I could do autoCAD on a screen any smaller than the one I have.
At only $200 difference, the 17 inch is a no brainer as it provides significantly more screen real estate, an extra USB port, an SD card slot and better onboard speakers at a very marginal cost in weight and size compared to a fully decked out 15 inch with anti-glare.
For those concerned about carrying it all day, try using the best load bearing part of your body: your back.
I use a ThinkTank shapeshifter backpack that includes a belt strap which helps to -redistributes the weight to my hips as well as my back for an even load. I carry camera gear and a tripod with it which is substantially heavier than a MacBrook Pro 17 and I'm a small guy!
Insofar as smaller laptops are concerned, they have their merits as well. I would not bring a 17 inch to a university campus for instance, simply because I don't like bringing attention to myself. A small device will allow you to do your computing incognito. Brandishing a highly visible laptop with a large screen is akin to holding a sign that reads "Steal me!".
By the way, is it true that economy class seats on trains or continental flights really cannot accommodate a 17 inch notebook? Has anyone tried?
most on here complain about it being too big not too expensive, I wonder how many rule it out based on price?
It's certainly the case that some bus seats are too closely spaced to let one open the 17" (and probably the 15") to a comfortable angle.By the way, is it true that economy class seats on trains or continental flights really cannot accommodate a 17 inch notebook? Has anyone tried?

It's more that the tables tend not to be deep enough to allow the MBP to sit far enough forward to allow the screen to open to a comfortable angle. There would be enough room with a bigger table. It's certainly the case that some bus seats are too closely spaced to let one open the 17" (and probably the 15") to a comfortable angle.

With a depth difference of only .69", if the 17" is too big, the 15" will be too big as well.
When people can do business with paper & pen, why use a computer? When people can do business using iPhones and Androids, literally a MBP (or any laptop) 17" display is way too big.
To those of you MEN, if you want a great 17" laptop, the MBP is far and away the finest![]()
