For regular user, is too much

Moreover, not only the screen, the computer is huge. And when you open it, it feels like there is so waste of space. At least put a full keyboard on it! home/delete keys and number pad. HPs and Sony's 15" have full keyboards.

I definitely don't need 17" .... 13" is enough for me.

When I'm at home I work on a desktop machine anyway.

It's hard to put in a full keyboard without putting either the keyboard off center (which wouldn't look as nice) or the user off center (which IMO is bad ergonomics).

to my naked eye the mac 17 inch is about the same as the pc 15 inch; nobody can beat the thinness of apple

The rising popularity of the macbook air seems to have shifted perspectives somewhat. I don't see anywhere near as many 17" macbook pros these days. I think a 15" Air will be ridiculously popular.

I have to agree with alot of posts...

1.You really dont see as many 17" MBP's - I'll track that up to the increased demand for more portable friendly laptops and recently tablets.

2. I do think that the 17" has a place in the MBP line up, true professionals do need a portable desktop replacement.

3. The 17" MBP's are huge and when you look at them open they do seem like they are wasting space, I mean come on Apple you have the exact same keyboard on a 13" MBP as the 17" MBP...really!?

Some true professionals can get by with an 11" MacBook Air as their only computer. Seriously.

some may say the 17 is too big, I used to say that, but now I must acknowledge that the 17 MBP is the first Mac product that I have truly fallen in love with. The thing is a beast, boasts a 1200p screen, weighs just 6.6 pounds, has express card, has a 3rd usb port, just the perfect laptop for me.

I tried to go with smaller computers for many years but they just could not satisfy my ego, nor satisfy the tasks that I require. Just last night, I had handbrake running at full blast encoding a 1080p video and when it was done, my battery was drained all the way to 31% and it was plugged in the whole time!!! Now that's power! :D

Or maybe the 17" BigBoyBooks aren't as cheap as the 13" Babybooks?

I had a 17" MacBook Pro with a Core Duo processor, I believe it was a 2.16 Ghz, and it had 1GB of RAM (What were they thinking, right?).

Anyways, it was a good machine, and I was only 17 at the time, so that means that no gym membership was required to carry that computer ;-). It was perfect for on the go usage, as long as it wasn't too often.

Though I can say I am now a proud owner of my 13" MBP, and it is my main computer. I don't need an external monitor or anything at all.

i wonder if the res will increase on the 2012 retina 17 mbp?

I am happy with my 15 inch macbook pro, and very portable. My needs is power, and portablity therefore 15 inch fits perfect.

I love using an external monitor, BT kb and BT mouse, and it turns my 13" into an instant desktop. So yes it is definitely doable, and i love having only one computer, as its one place for my files.

I use both an MBA 11" and MBP 17". The MBP 17" with SSD and HDD combo make it a beast of a portable.

I think calling the MBP 17" a desktop replacement is almost an insult to the MBP 17". This machine is a living animal full of rage and power. A desktop replacement is more like an overweight middle aged guy who used to lift weights but is now too busy married with kids.

I came from a 15" to a 17". It was different at first but now it feels as small as the 15. I would honestly be happy with a 19 if they had because the 17 feels small.

Honestly, I think 13 is the absolute max I would go for myself. However, I am not a graphic designer. I'm staring at excel spreadsheets and databases and drafting reports. When I'm at a desk, Ill plug into a bigger display. Give me the power of a 15 in the 13 inch form factor. Higher res and specs!

Too big for my needs but not too big in general. I've used other 17" screen laptops, including on my lap, and find them perfectly usable. If I was looking for a main PC, that would not be tied to a single desk, I would certainly consider one, though would lean more towards the 15" as a matter of personal preference. And budget, of course. That is one of the main problems for the average user I would say. The fact that you have to go high spec, and therefore high price, to get the bigger screen.

Until you are a professional and your 3 weeks overseas assignment got extended to 5 weeks and you're stuck with the newest MBA, with the 13" screen (a ****** one at that) - you will sorely miss the 17" screen (even if it's much heavier) and the power that comes with it.

This is exactly what happened to me in my Asia assignment.

would be perfect if you could get all the options the 17" has on the 15". then people who just want a bigger laptop could order a 17" instead. i wanted one, and shouldve got one, but im happy enough with my 15". i dont think its too big, people who order it wat a laptop that size, but like i said, i guarantee if apple gave the 15" those options, they wouldnt sell half as much of the 17"

but... that'll be the day right...

not to large

No-p. I Guess Macbook pro 17'' is very useful and not to big. I am a 3D artist and music producer. From time to time have no access to desktop. 17'' - is perfect size for me. I don't want any larger and smaller. I just wish if it would be faster a bit ))

13" is worthless really for anything. I regret buying it. At least get a 15" with the HD display, its worth the extra $. I feel like i can only have 1 window up at a time.

It's too big for some, and the best size for some.

If you love the screen estate, then the 17" is great to work on.
By that, I mean that if you like having windows open side by side on your screen, for comparison purpose, or multi-tasking, the 17" is great.
