The matte screen option may come exclusive to this MacBook Pro too.

That is what I hope for. If they do it like that then so many people would be really happy. Lets really hope that Apple does listen to us.

Or should we start saying? Dear Santa Jobs...... :))))

I think the 17" should have an optional matte screen, some people like myself prefer the glossy over the matte.

I hope not. I hope that the delay of almost 3 months has another reason than just a manufacturing issue. It would be nice to get matte option or something like that.
Also, blue ray would be a nice bonus and also a surprise although I don't need blue ray now. :)

I was SO disapointed they didn't include Blu Ray in the updates. I've heard some speculation that it's because the 15.4" and lower Macbooks use 9.5mm slot loading drives, and Blu Ray drives to date are 12mm, but it's a pain having to boot to Windows and use an external drive, just to save 2.5mm....

The reason is that they didn't make a 17" unibody in time. Say it with me: There will be no laptop Nehalem chips until late Q3 2009.

The next update will be Montevina–what is in the MacBook and 15"–and a GPU that we know isn't worthless (as opposed to the current 8600M).

Well, technically the Macbook/Pros don't use Montevina, which is just an Intel marketing term. They do use the newest iteration of the mobile Penryn though.

I don't care about the screen, better graphics would be nice but it's not needed since I stare at a terminal all day anyways. I would like to see a boost in CPU, allowed memory and HD space though. I hope it looks good too since it will be my first Pro.

I really want a much thicker, better cooled form factor that can actually stand up to being used heavily, quad core CPU options, a 9800 series GPU, and of course Blu Ray. For the price it's not asking a lot :(

Why do people want blu-ray? I would be move inclined to buy it if it didn't have it, I feel it's a waste of money.

I have been waiting for this since the beginning of summer.

There will be NO Blu Ray
There will be NO Matte Option
There will be NO Nehalem
There will be NO better GPU
We MAY see a slight bump in clock speed due to the extra space for heat dispersion...if that.

Don't get your hopes up people. :p

And not to turn this into a flame war, but the whole "I hate glossy screens" thing is ridiculous. I have used the new laptops in the Apple Store, which is VERY well lit, and I had no trouble focusing on the screen. It's called adapting.

And Blu Ray, as Skil said, is all a big corporate cluster-f*** and isn't a needed extra cost. Why would anyone want to watch a high definition movie on a laptop when you could buy a stand-alone Blu Ray player for a fraction of the cost and play it on a nice new LCD TV?? Sure DVDs are practical cheap and unless your a huge stickler about the way things look on a 17" screen the eye won't catch much of a difference while the movie is in motion. Guess these are my opinions that I'm sharing with you all. :]

I'm an Apple Update Realist, and I approve this message.

I'd say that the 17" gets the 2.8 update available to the 15" standard with a 3.xx BTO option.

So people aren't allowed to have a preference?

It doesn't cost that much, and can be optional.

What kind of argument is this? By that logic, why does anyone need a laptop at all? They should just buy a desktop PC for a fraction of the cost and use it with a nice new LCD monitor.

:]

Its not ridiculous. I went to Apple store too and yes, it was ok on macbook which is 13" and it was kinda ok on the MBP 15" but I can tell you that its definately not gonna be ok on the 17" for me. I have 30" ACD and I can't imagine that being glossy either. Its just distracting for me, yes my eyes can adapt but I still know that its there and it is more exhausting.
Its like acupuncuture - there is a little pain when they put the needles in and YES you can adapt to it but it doesn't mean that you like it and wouldn't opt for pain free option if you had one.

See? You are ok with glossy, I'm ok with matte. All I want from Apple is to include that option and it will make me very happy. I don't think I'm asking for much.

The only reason blu-ray would be worth while on a MBP would be if the resolution supported 1080P. Now granted the 17" should have enough resolution to drive this of course.

But how many times have we heard and experienced that you can hardly tell the difference in 720p and 1080p in LCD TVs until you get up to the 40"+ range?

*ANY* laptop screen for years has been HD, and even if it weren't, it would *still* be useful to have Blu Ray on it, even if you had a 640x480 screen or something.

17" Discontinued

I had been reading that Apple may discontinue the 17". It's just a rumor at this point but it would make sense since they didn't make a unibody version of it. It's ridiculous when people say Apple didn't have time to do it.

They could be introducing an 18.4" version instead.

That's big... would probably buy it...maybe that is the reason they didn't release the 17" with the rest? :)

I probably wouldn't. Too big. I am patiently waiting for them to update the 17" if not by February then I will just get a 15"

It's not really much different from 17".

I don't know, I've played with Sony's AW in a store, and...it simultaneously seems huge, and kinda small. I mean it's really small considering how big the screen is...I don't know. It's actually the same width and slightly longer than my current keyboard (and narrower actually than another keyboard I have at my desk)...so...I don't know.

I'm kind of scared of it's size, and yet kind of not.

It's I think like 8.6lbs, which interestingly is only a few inches more than a Dell I was just helping someone with from 2003...that was a 15" system! It's several POUNDS lighter than some 17" systems...so again, it's kind of huge, and kind of small...at the same time, i don't know.

Hopefully its cooling system seems more robust than Apple's :-/
