I dont care if its 17" or 18.4", I just want them to come out with the darn things already. My girlfriend is purchasing me one the day its available for xmas.(late xmas present)

:werd: I can't wait...I'm getting sick of my tiny 13" screen. :(

This wait is killing me!

I, too am waiting to upgrade my 2.33 15" to a 17" and was very disappointed that it was ignored this fall.

It would suck if they discontinued it or made it bigger -- but if that's the case, I'd be fine with getting a 17" of the current generation and using that for a few years.

Anyone else find it odd that besides the upcoming 17"'s screen/drive issues they reported with it at the launch of the new MBPs, that there hasn't been a peep from Apple about it???

Well, this is Apple! I just keep hoping it was delayed because they have something special in store.

I've always been disappointed how the 17" model just has the same hardware but a 2" larger screen (and any more, closer to a 1.5" larger screen).

Blu Ray...would fit the slightly larger space they have. A better GPU...etc.

Or just do a totally different design. I mean I think these people who are crazy about it having to be some arbitrary thinness are going to get 13" or 15" notebooks anyway, so...just give the rest of us a powerhouse that can actually cool itself and be pushed hard, while those guys browse the web and type letters or whatever they do :D

Blu-ray fits in the MacBook. Apple doesn't care.

And the new 17" will have the 9600M GT.

Supposedly current slot loading Blu Ray drives (at least as of a few months ago) would fit in the 17" chassis as is, but not the 15" chassis.

And I'm guessing it'll just be another 9600 (ie 8600...) but I really want more from it. It's fun to at least pretend. On the other hand, if I end up ordering something else first, which will probably happen, THEN I want Apple to just do their normal thing and release the same thing at 17" :p

What part of "bag of hurt" don't you get? They're going to hold out until HDCP isn't used anymore or until the next format after Blu-ray. Then they'll start their own standard with that format without DRM.

Sales of Blu-ray players have taken off now that the player prices have gotten under $200. There will not be a new format, per se, but there will be increased Blu-ray capacities.

So....

...besides manufacturing issues and the neverending Blu-Ray debate, has anyone actually HEARD anything about the magical, mystical new 17"? This close to MacWorld, you'd think there'd be some buzz besides a new mini.

I kinda wanted the 17 incher, but I don't know if I'd like carrying it around. I'm kinda skinny, and the 15 inch is light as hell. But for a home computer the 17 inch would be awesome with the high res screen.

I really hope that they actually release a bigger than 17" model.

I don't care about other specs as long as they have an option for better graphic card that's all I care about. Price? No matter how expensive it is I don't care I need a new laptop! (I have enough savings for last October... now the funds is a lot bigger than what it was... can't wait to spend that money on Appley MacBooky goodness!)

Since there haven't been any rumors at all about the 17" now I'm concerned they may not release it at MacWorld.

I have been waiting for this since the beginning of summer.

There will be NO Blu Ray
There will be NO Matte Option
There will be NO Nehalem
There will be NO better GPU
We MAY see a slight bump in clock speed due to the extra space for heat dispersion...if that.

Don't get your hopes up people. :p

And not to turn this into a flame war, but the whole "I hate glossy screens" thing is ridiculous. I have used the new laptops in the Apple Store, which is VERY well lit, and I had no trouble focusing on the screen. It's called adapting.

And Blu Ray, as Skil said, is all a big corporate cluster-f*** and isn't a needed extra cost. Why would anyone want to watch a high definition movie on a laptop when you could buy a stand-alone Blu Ray player for a fraction of the cost and play it on a nice new LCD TV?? Sure DVDs are practical cheap and unless your a huge stickler about the way things look on a 17" screen the eye won't catch much of a difference while the movie is in motion. Guess these are my opinions that I'm sharing with you all. :]

According to the Applle rep at he local apple store, the 17inch was updated and there was no mention of anything coming down the road for something different.

Now we all know how tight lipped Apple is , but if the 17" was revamped already , what is the serious likely hood of them putting out a new one in January?

Your Applle rep is an idiot. It wasn't revamped at all.

Didn't even get a new processor or GPU.

Where do people get their ignorance from anyway? (your rep that is not you)

Either way, there will be a 17" revamp/update to bring it in line with the current 15" MBP. Sad part is that it will only be in line with the current model.

Meaning you can just take what the 15" has now and put it into a bigger case. I doubt Apple will even give it anything other than an extra (and very useless) USB port.

No current generation 17" pros are available right now. What was that guy talking about? Did he even work there?

The 17" was technically refreshed, even if it amounted to even less than the 15"...

It costs a crapload to license tho.

Not really. I mean I don't know if it's more or less than DVD was at this point, but the playback programs are <$100, and external hardware INCLUDING a playback program can be had for <$120, so that's not really a big deal, certainly as an option on a computer.

Well, it's pathetic, but technically they did SOMETHING with it.

Hmm...okay now that I'm leaning back towards a Macbook Pro, I wonder if I should wait for the 17" model. Surely at Macworld? I mean I don't care all that much if it's just the same hardware again, but if it has higher end options-Blu Ray, a better GPU, quad core CPU, designed to really be pushed, etc.

For the record it's Blu-ray without the 'e'.

And once again Apple doesn't care about it. Until the slimline drives are $100 dollars so Apple can charge us $300 dollars for them as BTO we won't see them. I doubt that will be the case by even Core i7.

Also can't find anything to back this up, but I believe Blu-ray also draws a lot of power, (or at least more than DVD) something Apple is a stickler with.

Nooooooooooooooo
i want new computer... otherwise once it will be updated again by that time i would be able to afford a mac pro with a cinema display T-T

The DRIVE doesn't take much power. Decoding them takes a lot more thand DVD, because it really pushes the hardware, unlike DVD which by now takes virtually nothing to decode (not the case of course when it launched!)

I had been reading that Apple may discontinue the 17". It's just a rumor at this point but it would make sense since they didn't make a unibody version of it. It's ridiculous when people say Apple didn't have time to do it.

For anyone that watched the new macbook keynote:

Remember when steve was asked about the 17" at the Q&A session? He said it will come out later.

I take that as meaning "not discontinued, just delayed"

Yeah, so I'm still wondering if I should wait for it. Surely it wouldn't be delayed if all it were were the same thing as the 15" model? But maybe, because the manufacturing process might be harder or something
