The black lends itself much more to better presentation. It creates an illusion that the screen is bigger than it actually is, and that it goes all the way to the edge.

I thought this with the AluiMac too.

I'm still sort of torn. I also like how how the black bezel blends with the screen and makes it looks like the screen goes to the edge but the glare would be an issue. Has anyone tried a anti-glare film?

Saw it today in person, it's an ugly black bezel around the 15" matte screen, no Macbook Pro logo at the bottom either.

Also, they mentioned it's not available for the 13" yet, later this year maybe.

The one you saw was a mod by an after market company that charges $199 for the 15" or 17" mod. I saw it at MacWorld too and I agree that the mod is UglY!

I personally like glossy, it just looks better IMO but I'm not a professional photographer or graphic designer. Matte just looks boring to me but that's just me.

I stayed with the glossy.

I am not a graphic artist so I don't really care if the colors are more vivid. Not to start a flame fest ;]

My point is that yes it comes with the grey bezel, looks a little more classic....BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT BLACK KEYBOARD!?! Who else thinks for the matte model they should have made them silver so it would match?? Looks like a frankenstein to me.

What about the MacBook Air? It has a silver bezel and black keys.

I think the matte bezel execution could be better.. What's with that gap!?

Thanks for the great pics.

There was too much commotion over whether the display was "really" matte. Many people didn't bother referring the the actual keynote. Schiller clearly said it's the same as the old one. Why not add this option across the lineup, though? Charge $50 for it. They'll make more money and more customers would be happy. I don't mind the display on my Air because it's incredibly clear. I'd rather it be matte, but the air screen is nicer than my white 24" iMac screen so I can't really complain.

People are saying the contrast on the matte screen is better, while the blacks on the glossy are washed out. Simply not true. The matte screen just seems brighter. I mean, it's a LOT brighter. It's difficult to determine whether this is due to the slight camera angle (doubt it), lighting (doubt it), or perhaps the brightness settings weren't the same when the photo was taken (maybe). The matte reduces glare, but it shouldn't reduce brightness to that degree. The glossy screen looks so bright that even the guy's blue shirt is "clipped", losing all colour information. It's basically an indication that the screen was overexposed, while the matte screen appears a bit underexposed.

Also, the silver bezel doesn't look like it fits the screen's frame at all. It just looks like the dimensions of the silver bezel are really poor and is too small to fit the laptop well. There are huge gaps all along the edges.

What about the MacBook Air? It has a silver bezel and black keys.

And it's ugly compared to the new MacBooks.......in my own opinion. :]

Seems silly to have so much silver, and so little black.

Of course then you can argue "Why do you care what it looks like, it's a computer!!! It's not for aesthetics." Well I like them to look good.

Imagine if they made a matte iPhone and instead of black around the screen (in between the actual screen and the chrome rim) they had put silver??

Ugly. ;)

EDIT: Also maybe if the made the silver bezel all smooth or the (rubber?) ring silver, or no gap, or whatever that thing is it would look nicer. The black is just more classy, it also semi-hides the iSight camera...which should have been upgraded this time around too. :p

Well, everyone has their own opinions and I guess ours differ. I think that the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros are pretty ugly with that black border and I much prefer the look of the MacBook Air to them.

The one on the left looks better.

I hate to admit this, but from a functional point of view, I think I'm beginning to enjoy the edge to edge glass screen on my new MBP vs. the old matte. No more gunk getting stuck in the bezel, and I can clean the screen with my tshirt.

I too agree that the black bezel version looks better, of course. The entire screen appears nice flat and smooth and the black makes you focus better on the screen.

The silver version even has a slight recession (or inverted) on the edge. That edge is casting shadow on the silver-bezel because i assume that's where the glasspart was previously (?).

And with the increased rounded corners (which make better impression on the glossy version) make the matte look like the old clamshell ibooks.

It's a big disappointment Apple hasn't thought this out better and made the matte with black bezel as well. Obviously they don't care so much about matte-people.

But hey it's much better than no matte at all.

It's not a slight recession on the edge. The "shadow" is an illusion. It's the black seal that people have been complaining about. If Apple had gone with the gray seal they use on the Air, it wouldn't be as noticeable.

Apple may have been really lazy with the design for the matte version, but they didn't just take the glass out and say that's it.

Impossible to please much? The glass looks better, which is why Apple did it, meanwhile matte is what some (a lot of) people asked for, and voilà, they got it. I wouldn't blame Apple for being lazy.

Btw, on a positive note to me the matte 17" is the closest Apple has come to a design that is modern while being reminiscent of the original TiBook design (silver with black keys).
