I've never owned a 17" but I have a feeling I'll love it. Actually, I was saving up for a maxed out 17" before it was phased out. I really do hope they'll bring it back! Multitasking on a 4k beast too would be *amazing*

What's the appeal for a 17-inch here? With Retina, 15-inch should satisfy most people. Is it just that people want the maximum screen real estate posssible?

In 2009's WWDC Apple announced the unibody 17"MBP yes? They mentioned on stage that 2008 was a great year for Apple, they had their MBA and the introduction of the unibody design craze for the 13 and 15 inchers. Everyone raved about it, so Apple naturally brought back the 17"MBP in their 2009 WWDC with the crazed unibody design and everyone wigged out LOVED it.

I think the difference is that in that case there was only a couple of months between the 13" and 15" being redesigned and the new 17" being released (October 2008 to January 2009). Also they never stopped selling the old 17" MBP in between.

Its really got nothing to do with the amount of pixels on the screen. Yes, a retina 15" has as many pixels as a 30" screen, but you can't distinguish them.
As you said, its people wanting the most screen real estate. With a 17" its just easier to do some tasks, like multitasking (having 2+ windows open on a 15" is really hard to multitask with), as well as web design (larger real estate, but with web design the retina pixels actually count :D ), photoshop, etc.

Plus, its usually got a higher end graphics card and a faster, more powerful processor than the 15", which really helps with gaming or anything processor/graphics intensive.
Honestly, the only drawback is size and weight. But both I can handle...

I hope that is true so I can get rid of this crappy small 15" rMBP. Never ever am I going to buy 15". Useless for me.
Miss my old 17" MBP. Please Apple, bring us back the option. 15" is not enough

Physical size is still quite an issue no matter the resolution.

And obviously 17" is physically bigger than 15".

1920 x 1200 effective desktop space on 15" is tiny compared to the same effective desktop on 17".

not to get your hopes up ....
thats a shady website, all they wrote are baseless rumors to gain pageviews ...
especially that "stabley times"

I've been tracking news website about macbook haswell rumors and suspiciously while other credible websites like 9to5 and MR did not have any information or leaks, they still able to post new articles almost every week.

just saying, if news didn't come out of MR, 9to5, mactrast or other user frequented websites its probably fake.

I would bet even some random русский websites have better track record than them.

Hope.

Hope is good for the community. Hope is good in general. Myths are brilliant tools of bringing harmony to the world. As long as they are harmless and inspire dialogue of what drives peoples' imaginations' wild! There are worse sites and content out there which pit people against one another every second. This little speculative article about the next coming of the 17"MBP is like a beautiful and dreamy fable for me to sink my imagination, and desires into.

It is A-O-K!

I can almost see this happening:

15" retina goes Iris Pro and drops the dedicated GPU.

17" retina MBP with 3840x2400 (4k) screen is introduced with the higher clock speed Haswell CPUs with HD 4600 graphics, plus a dedicated GPU. Still lighter than the 15" cMBP because of the thinner design, no optical drive, etc.

I would kill for this

Then I seriously hope it is a pro model with dvd-drive and all the ports.

The optical drive will be interesting given Apple's move away from such a component. Yet with a 17" laptop there's room to spare for that, what else could they use the extra space for if not a optical drive

All day battery maybe but that will increase the weight, or an extra drive bay. Time will tell if the rumor pans out, though I am more eager to see what apple does now (not that I want one but for curiosity sake)

Do we even have any ideas as to when these Haswell rMBP's will even be released yet??

Pretty much. That extra physical space really makes things easier and you have to remember that before the rMBP arrived it was 1440x900 15" vs 1920x1200 17" - Now the 15" has a 2880x1800 display and that is great .. but it's still in that 15" space and it is still only effectively the same real-estate as 1440x900. If you use the higher DPI setting then it goes to 3840x2400 which is effectively 1920x1200 but at this point you are going over the actual panels pixels and things don't look as great.

What I would want is a native 3840x2400 panel in a 17" body this would give us the effective real-estate of a 1920x1200 display at full and native "Retina" capability. It won't be blurry. Everything would be crisp.

I'm on my second 17" MacBook Pro and I'm about to buy a new notebook. If they release a 17" rMBP (Which if we are honest is unlikely) I'll buy it in a second. But if they don't I'll just get a maxed out 15" rMBP.

lotssss of room for cooling if they remove the DVD drive.
and that .... could lead to something else

...and Bose speakers... :D

Eww. Let's hope not!

1.5GB Fusion Drive maybe?

klipsch doesn't offer any inbuilt speakers either.
only those rubbish brands like Bouse, Beeets.

laptop speakers are adequate at best, regardless of whether they are "powered by -something-" or not.
because obviously, majority of users are not audiophiles ... and even if they do they probably wouldn't buy a laptop because its speakers are good and not considering other specs.

personally if i care about SQ, i wouldn't listen it using laptop speakers.
the minimum setup would be Laptop > USB DAC > headphones. (AKG / Grado FTW)

with apple focusing more on iPads and iPhones, another 17" mbp doesn't seem to be in the cards. sales of MBPs and all other PC laptops are sliding due to more people going to tablets.

And how much would a 17" retina screen cost?

Maybe they would be able to fit 32gb of RAM and an extra blade SSD in there for 2tb SSD if they start offering a 1tb blade SSD in the other models.

I agree with you. Having a 17" MBPr would allow for some extra Pro items. Dual SSDs in a RAID0 configuration, 32 GB of memory, larger battery life, etc... Would be very nice. Could complete with the high-end workstation notebooks.

Perhaps make it a BTO only option. I mean the 17" MBP sold much better than the MPs...

All for a gazillion-fafillion dollars!

And you better bring your gold bars, because they may not accept FRNs!

I want to echo this. I've "followed" Stabley Times for a while now. Every few days, they put together some article that's full of ridiculous conjectures and write it as fact. It's pure, unadulterated garbage.

Sorry to anyone who got their hopes up.
