I couldn't care less.

I couldn't give a rats turd if anyone thinks it's this or that or especially if the big shiny red fruit company doesn't use them anymore in their machines, they still sell an external optical drive for a handful of money. So this is clearly the fruity company saying yes we still offer that option to you. I couldn't care less if the second coming of the great 17"MBP doesn't have an optical drive, because I just want to see a really awesome new 17"MBP!

I'm not defending CDs, I'm just saying if anyone thinks their "dead", is clearly not someone who gets out of their houses much. Not everyone follows tech trends and "submits" to ridiculous buying frenzies to "stay ahead". How ridiculous a behavior. I use all the technology available no matter how old or "new" it is, I love technology and it serves me very well because I make good use of all of it!

Some people like mayo in their blood others like spring water.

I have floppy disks laying around. Just like CDs/DVDs, they will not be obsolete. They'll just never be used again :p

This. Best way of saying it.

Apples not likely to put an optical drive back in their laptops ever. Or any of their products- they took it out of the Mac Pro, right? My bet is the next iMac won't have any optical drive.

Personally, I would prefer it just to have the option to have it. Apple is so obsessed with thin and light machines, which is getting old. Truly, laptops never needed to be thinner than the original macbook pros. A bit thick, but not gigantic. Apple is making things way smaller than anybody truly cares about... Anyone here actually care about the blade thin rMBP? Just my opinion.

iMac - Superdrive?

The current iMac doesn't have a superdrive.

I have been waiting for  to bring back the 17" MBP. If  do, I hope it will be a kick butt fully spec'd to the hilt machine for creative professionals. ie. a sh*load of RAM, dual SSD's, awesome GPU, type thing.. :D

Who can afford actually a $4k+ laptop?...

The same people buying Dell Precision Notebooks, HP Elitebooks, etc... These are high-end workstation class notebooks. Spending $6k to $10k on a notebook in this class range isn't uncommon.

From a usability point of view and RMPB 17" would make a lot of sense as it would make much better use of the screen real estate.

And those notebooks are more upgradable than a Mac. You can spend that kind of money up front on a workstation notebook, then have the ability to upgrade the CPU and in some cases the GPU later on without having to buy whole new machine. Those systems also come with superior displays. The Retina display can only dream of holding a true 10-bit IPS panel's jock strap. The rMBP has its place, but it's not at that end of the market.

the current iMac doesn't have any optical drive, so your assumption of next generation is most likely true.

And yes, i do care about the thinness of the MacBook Pro Retina, it is a laptop, i want it to be as portable as possible.

To clarify, I was speaking of a hypothetical 17" MBPr upgrade which could compete in that market. None of the Dells nor HP notebooks in that class have had upgradeable CPUs or GPUs (the ones I have used).

You can upgrade the the HDs and memory of course. However, given the money usually the memory is maxed out and the HDs are one SSD and a large HDD.

Given that this thread is hypothetical, a 17" 4k retina display, dual PCI-E SSDs, 32 GB of memory, a multi GB video card, and top end Haswell CPU would make for a very nice workstation class notebook that I think could compete well in that market.

I think that chances of this are pretty slim but a 17" 4k display is not unrealistic for the future.

if they make thinner bezel then the overall size wont be that much bigger over 15"

The 17 already has a thinner bezel than the 15 and isn't much bigger. That's why I kinda just smile when folks talk about "lugging" the computer around it's just not that big or heavy.

Well this would be just spectacular. Still seems like a long shot, but here's to hoping!

Just as  refreshed the Mac Pro, there every possibility  will refresh the 17" MBP. Maybe not as radical, but better than ever. Without hopes and dreams will might as well be dead.

met a friend with the late 2011 17" macbook pro the other day. That thing is a beast! Wish apple gets it in retina, id be first in line to sell my current 15" retina and take the 17". I guess the current top of the line retina costed the same as the 17" one right?

With all the beefy upgrades I did on my late 2011 17"MBP 2.5Ghz beast came to more of a savings and boost in power than the most recent 2.8Ghz maxed out rMB I picked up soon after, with all the money I saved up of course for a refresh of the 2012 17"MBP which never took place. Shame on the shiny red fruit maker, but I understand they are probably perfecting the beast behind their little clouds. So yeah, with the savings, I went and splurged on the maxed out 2.8Ghz r-MB, the recent maxed out iMac, a couple of audio interfaces and some more instruments to add to my studio.

See, the freedom of being able to upgrade your own machine equates to saved time and MONEY. They don't want you to do that, because they are greedy bastards. Yes greedy bastards.

Make something worth me dishing out 4000 now Apple, I dare you to make it worthwhile and not just appeal to big oil money kids. Spoiled brats.
