i assure you, Apple will _NEVER_ make another laptop with a DVD drive, ever.

mainly because it is useless and is old technology.

As I sit next to a 17" burning a CD, while my Mac Pro is at home ripping and converting 2 Blu-Rays.

I've had my 17" MacBook Pro over 4 years now. In that time I used the optical drive maybe 3 or 4 times and every usage scenario I could have used the internet to get what I needed or used a USB Stick.

I do not miss the optical drive one bit.

Hey guys just chiming in because I know something about the subject of the sources and these "publications".
These websites are spamming trash articles without any merit on Google News just to get hits. I will list some websites which you should not take seriously, ever.
Stabley Times
PopHerald
Highlight Press
USDailyVoice
SidhTech

What their tactic is, is to spam the same article just worded differently, either to always be at the newest spot in google news or to meet the writers daily quota.

dvd is dead, get over it :)))
blue ray is pretty much DOA and when we will get 4K movies it will all be streamed but thats probably 10 years away from now.

in the last 6 years i have used dvd once. internet is just easier :)

Spare me, can't you be more original, come - on...

I'm a recording artist and I'm still selling hundreds of copies of my albums in CD and CD-R, DVD live concerts of my original productions. I produce aspiring musicians and poets every week, they are distributing hundreds of their CD-Rs with beautiful artwork no less, every minute.. The income generated from my album sales in the form of physical sales (CDs) is ridiculous!!! I distribute hundreds of thousands of copies of my physical album on line in ever possible way.

CDs
DID NOT SUDDENLY BECOME obsolete because a few of you have it set in your minds that trend has wiped them out, that they are "useless" and such... Pullllleeeeezzzze guys. You haven't lived long enough to see the "END" of CDs, I am even pressing vinyls and they are still sold at many concerts. So please reserve your opinion, at least think before you post something so concretely as if it were "fact". Just because you no longer have a relationship with CDs doesn't all of a suddenly mean they are useless and obsolete.

I have data backed up on DVD-R CD-Rs since 1998 that are fully operational without a single skip.

Public announcement:

CD-Rs are not obsolete people, don't jump over the edge yet. It isn't going to be obsolete for another few hundred years.

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA obsolete !?

----------

Apple will take out the dedicated graphics card of the 15rmbp and make us upgrade to a 17rmbp to have one. :p

Yes they will. They have in the past.

just because minority use them doesnt mean its not obsolete. my grandma still has tape radio but so in your mind that is not dead either?
great u have success but css and dvds are done

i dont care how many money you make selling CDs, fact is that there is way better solutions out there than buying physical CDs, and i'm not gonna walk around with a disk drive in my laptop because 5% of the user base "Maybe" will use a CD once a month. CD drives are old, big, heavy and takes up a crapload of space where you'd be much better off with an aditional ssd, on top of a much slimmer, portable laptop. CD drives are not necessary anymore.

i'd rather have a thin laptop with more storage and cooling solutions, than a big bulky laptop with a near un-used technology inside.

Buy a USB -> disk drive if you're so much in love with it.. but please, let the rest of us have a laptop with better tech.

I just bought the Samsung ST-506BB Bluray so that I can read CDs. I still buy CDs, because I like the ownership idea (rather than licensing from some online store) and I enjoy liner-notes.

Moreover, some SW still comes on CDs (professional SW)- Having said that, I've never missed the fact tat there is no built-in DVD drive in my MBA13, and can count the number of times I used it on my MBP15 on the fingers of one hand. It's clear that CD and DVD are dead for Apple - they have their iTunes Store, so the quicker everyone submits to that, the better.

As for the OP: I believe the chance of a 17" rMBP is 0%. Apple would rather sell external 4K Blunderbolt displays to ppl with 13-15" rMBP.

I have seen this rumor. It's origins are a little shady. I don't give it any credibility yet. I would love for it to be true though!

Apple, if you are reading this, you need to know that if you bring back the 17" MBP I will get one instead of my MSI.

I have floppy disks laying around. Just like CDs/DVDs, they will not be obsolete. They'll just never be used again :p
