My New 17"

My new 17" arrived today, replacing my old model. Putting them both together, the old one looks positively archaic, whereas yesterday it looked sleek.

Whatever you think of the new design, it is actually better. The surface wears off the old ones around the keyboard after a while, not to mention the track pad wear which I don't expect with the new glass ones. They were horrible to service or replace the hard drive. The new glass screen is fantastic as far as being resistant to scratches (and I haven't even seen any glare as I use it). And the unibody feels so strong.

I don't quite understand the people who don't like the look, but my two daughters are apparently counted among them. I think it's a case of needing good taste. :) :p

Ahh mine just got delayed again. First it was February 12-15, then February 19, and now just yesterday when it was supposed to ship they push it back again today a FULL week. Fantastic.

Multi-touch, backit keyboard, big CPU, tons of Memory!

This is the best laptop ever made. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in need of medical attention.

Not if you want to make sweet, sweet love to it. Then it's just far too ugly compared to the old model.

:D:D

You're not going to buy a laptop because you think it's a little uglier than the previous gen? Are you doing work on a computer, or are you dating it?

Yeah that's what I've been thinking too...surely a black bezel wouldn't get in the way of a 2.93GHz processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid state drive?!? :D

They should have either used White Keys or but some Black Glass or Glossy Black Plastic on the top to make it match.

White keys...now I could definitely get into that. ;) But I don't get how people complaining about the chiclet keys on the MBPs don't say anything about the aluminum desktop keyboards, which are exactly the same. Hmmm...;)

Sounds like a fantastic machine. Could you please post some pictures of your machine ?

Cheers

The Palo Alto Apple Store finally has two 2.66Ghz glossy 17" MBP's on display -- they look great, but the reflection of the glossy screen still bothers me.

If anyone has received their matte 17" MBP can you please post pictures of the machine?

Mine's scheduled to arrive the day after tomorrow (26th). Same specs as yours except 8GB RAM. I'll post specs (and SSD drive manufacturer) if nobody else beats me to it.

Oh, I'm anotherciscoguy :) PM me if you're in San Jose and can't wait until March to see this puppy. ;)

sweet, i'm hoping to buy the base model with the glossy screen. Hopefully my local apple store will get the notebooks this week :D

The shipment time this morning at Apple.com is down to 5-7 business days. Looks like they are ramping up with demand.

I got some of my components that shipped separate from the MBP yesterday.

Still waiting on shipment confirmation on the MBP.

You'll love it. Despite the bad reviews of the SSD, I'm seeing bootup times of 28 seconds (from pressing the power button to the login prompt) and another 5 seconds after logging in for the Desktop and Menu bar to be fully functional.

I haven't measured my Oct2008 17" MBP with the iPhone stopwatch, but it took way longer than this to boot.

Any of the iWork '09 apps load in 2 seconds or less.
iTunes loads in 3 seconds
Garageband loads in 3 seconds (!)
Cisco's VPN client loads instantly :)

I'm sure the Samsung SSD is much faster, but the stock SSD seems plenty fast enough for now. Sour grapes? Perhaps, but I like sour sometimes! :D

PS. If you know Eric or Craig from the Carmel office, tell 'em Allen (former IU customer circa '98, but anotherciscoguy circa '99) says "Hi" :)

On the way!

I got a shipment notification this morning. It's due on Wednesday.

Not too bad. 5 business days from my order date (8 actual days) and three business days (4 actual days) for delivery.

Now at local Apple Store

Glad that I ordered online. We were at our local Apple store today (Mall of America, Minneapolis, MN) and they just got the 17 inchers. However, only the base model. No CPU/HD upgrades.

That being said, it is a gorgeous machine and the screen (glossy) is beautiful.

Can't wait for mine.
