The ship date for the 2.66GHz 17" MBP has finally moved from 3-4 weeks to 7-10 days at the online Apple Store! However, if you order the 2.93 the ship date is still "3-4 weeks", and if you order the antiglare option -- even with the 2.66 processor -- the ship date changes to "4-5 weeks".

So the 2.66 glossy ones are the only ones that can be had within 7-10 days as of now, but that's at least better than it was until yesterday, when every model had a ship date of at least 3-4 weeks listed.

Yeah, I had checked this morning and it was still 3-4 weeks.

However, I just tried it and the only option that delayed shipment that I selected was the anti-glare option. The 2.93 still showed 7-10 days.

Nice to see the notable reduction in shipment time.

Now, I just wonder when the Apple stores will have some in stock and which if any options over the base config they will offer in store. My local stores still deny any timeline for in-store availability.

Still long time in Aus!

Out side of the US the delivery time is still 3-4 weeks! I assume and hope that will change, although i am pretty sure we are further ahead in the day than the US, maybe the global web sites are controlled from the US? Anyway.... Hurry... i missed getting the 15" uni when it came out and am looking like missing this one also... as I Work at sea, although i am sure it will be worth missing the original order, if it comes in time :)

I like the designs, but I think you WON'T be seeing these in every TV show and movie as the 'generic', but iconic laptop.

The Black Bezel is beautiful - it provides the illusion that the screen extends to the edge - all glass. And the keyboard simply needs to reflect the two tone look.

Both the old and new MacBook designs are great. Regardless of your hate, if you see the new one next to an old one you will immediately see which computer looks more 'modern'.

Agreed. The black bezel is really nice and does away with one of my least favourite things in my MBP, dust under the rim - although that rubbery edge might still attract, I'm unsure.

But with the plastic edge line that extended around the entirety of the old design gone, it can only look better as a whole; that 'feature' lasted way too long in the design, and the groove served as both an additional dust collector and an arm hair biter. And the latch holes are of course gone in the new machines as well, so they really are most unholey, but in a good way.

Aus site update

Just checked again, and the Aus site is also now saying 7-10 days... also i changed to the antiglare and all other options and the shipment stayed as 7-10 days... perhaps a glitch? Hope not for all you anti glare fans!

Ugly is relative

Can those complaining about the new MBP's supposed aesthetic shortcomings at least agree that it's not in the same league of homeliness as a Kindle? Surely we can reach common ground if we try hard enough! :D

Mine's still not shipped. Due to ship, uh, today. Apple's obviously taking Just In Time Manufacturing to the next level...

The new ones look so much cleaner and "newer".

I think the 15" MBP is just the right size, and that's why it looks nice.
But the 17" MBP is to big and it looks odd, that's why i didn't get one.

Carbon Unibody

3 months from now, all high-end laptops will be unibody and in various shades of anodized aluminum and have black keyboards just like all of the windows laptops

I will speak now...

The next body redesign will be milled carbon fiber and even lighter than the aluminum uni.

90% of those who purchased an aluminum uni will cry how ugly the new one is.

I have spoken.

So mote it be...

Sour Grapes

What's wrong with some of you guys here, you act like you never saw the new Unibody Macbooks before. The 17" looks exactly the same as the 13" and the 15". I saw it at Macworld, it looks beautiful, especially the anti-glare model.

It is heartbreaking to spend 3 grand on a laptop, only to have a better one come out a year later. So these people have to find some fault with the new uni's.

The new trackpad alone is worth the upgrade. Use it for a day and you will be hooked.

Who cares about the color of they keys. And if it bothers you, I'm sure that is easy to change. I love the backlit keyboard. I used it on my niece's MacBook and love it.

The bezel? Pick the one you want. Either display is good. Don't like it--paint it. Stop acting like whining two year olds!

You have spoken absolute nonsense! :D

Carbon fibre laminates are made in high temperature presses and cannot be machined to size (except as sheets), let alone tapped to accept screws. I suspect Apple have tried and rejected this material long ago.

There may be carbon nanotube based aggregates that may be suitable for this type of application at some time in the future, but they're unlikely to be available outside research labs for at least 10 years.

yeah, that s-video port is all the rage right now.

And the dial-up modem. :D :D

OK, I know the Alienware laptop is for gaming and has to have those massive fans for adequate cooling/ventilation, but something tells me Apple could have done it better and more efficiently. (And there wouldn't be a dial-up modem.) :D

The Titanium PowerBook had a carbon fibre frame.

That wasn't the carbon fiber. That was titanium (hence the name of the model). The carbon fiber made up the inner frame.

I'm talking about the pearl white painted externally exposed carbon fibre frame, not the titanium.

And as I said, that wasn't carbon fiber. There was no external carbon fiber, everything you saw on it was titanium, and yes, it was that white painted stuff you're referring to. There was no paint of any sort on any of the carbon fiber in the titanium PowerBooks.

Wrong

"Although the shell was titanium, the frame was actually painted carbon fiber" - from ArsTechnica's 25 Years of Macintosh article.

"A thin, light bezel of carbon fiber (another exotic compound not typically found in notebooks) surrounds the base of the PowerBook, reportedly for extra structural rigidity" - from PCWorld's original review of the TiBook in 2001.

I'm happy for those who ordered and wanted it. However, those of us who don't like the new design will have to go elsewhere for our next laptop upgrade. Maybe once I see one in person I'll change my mind, though! I'll keep an eye out for them.

You're not going to buy a laptop because you think it's a little uglier than the previous gen? Are you doing work on a computer, or are you dating it?
