I won't miss people complaining things are late since Apple will now be able to release on their schedule and not based on the next big show.

This device was not released at Macworld. They said it would be released at a point in time that was only a few short weeks away.

Now - either they were lying at the time.

OR - they've had to, in some way, rush the final testing and development of this new product because of unforeseen problems causing delays of some sort.

Neither option bodes well for Apple, and neither option is impacted by Macworld.

Damn it looks good. I just hope they go glassy/rimless and whatever else needs done with the Air to bring it to that styling, as I think I'd tend towards that size next time.

The unibody machines really make me dislike my old style MBP :(.

I'll keep my older model (January '07) for a while longer as long as it still works. I'm NO-GO for the black keyboard.
FUGLY! GET RID OF THE BLACK KEYBOARD!

Looks more like the original RadioShack TRS-80 I had.

Ah, but Radio Shack smartened up and put a real keyboard on the CoCo 2 and 3.

Have you ever actually built anything from scratch? Finishing later than you originally plan generally does not mean you're turning out crap it means you are trying to get it right.

This is not the first time Apple has revised the delivery date for a new product (every product category has an example). In the majority of those instances the products were neither problematic or resulted in Apple's customer satisfaction ratings for quality of product or level of support to suffer.

You might like to believe this bodes poorly for Apple, but it does not. They are at historical highs for profitability, growth, breadth of product line, number of industry sectors they lead, cash reserves, brand recognition, consumer satisfaction, and expressed desire to purchase by consumers.

To the world outside of this miniscule and exceedingly whiney forum the 17" is not late and the black "chicklet" keys are not a sign that the Apple design team has lost its marbles and has started producing nothing but crap. To them it is right on time and the keyboard is a natural evolution of the Apple design aesthetic. Apple will sell more of this incarnation than any previous version. Get use to this folks, because this body and keyboard combination are going to be with us for three years and house quad if not eight cores before they restyle it. If you want something different you are going to have to figure out how to anodize it without frying the innards.

I.... However, those of us who don't like the new design will have to go elsewhere for our next laptop upgrade. Maybe once I see one in person I'll change my mind, though! I'll keep an eye out for them.

Macintosh, the computer for the rest of us...

It's also late. Very late. And very VERY expensive.

Who voted positive on this story, and why?

I did, because I like it...

I hear that folks can buy craputers for about $500.00. Evidently, this is not one of those...

Helllllllllloooooooo Folks,

...

There are countries where they force you to buy Newtons!

there are companies that force you to buy hell computers... oopps, dell craputers, that is.

So form is that much important than function? You rather use Windows because of the looks of the machine?

well said.

mine not shipping til march 17

Anyone else shipping in mid march? You think they will move that up or pretty firm?

Don't get me started!

S-Video is still the standard for VJs. There is a very real need for a MiniDP/S-Video adapter.

VJ's are you SERIOUS man? Sorry but if you're serious about video then S-video is about 10 years out of date. Its only the standard on cheap video mixers with terrible real time FX.. Of all the ports on a laptop I think is going back 10 years it would be a bloody S-Video port!

A scan converter is not that expensive if you're serious about your work..

Posters who say that MBP unibodies are FUGLY really mean "Whaaaa.... I wish I could afford to buy one!"

I have a hard time taking anyone serious when they say the design is bad. Especially when they base their opinion on a badly shot photo.

any pics of the matte option?

Supposedly the anti-glare option is going to take an extra week to deliver (anyone receive one yet?). I'm the only one at work who wanted that option, so a bunch of my co-workers will have theirs before me.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the new keyboards. I like the keyboard on my early-2008 MBP much better (having only tried the new ones in the store a few times, though). I found the totally flat keys made them difficult for my fingers to find keys, but maybe I'll get used to it. I'll be using a Unicomp Model M with this machine most of the time, though, so it won't be much of an issue. The new laptop keyboards aren't nearly as bad as the new desktop keyboards, though, I was surprised at how bad those felt.

Well, I have yet to receive my anti-glare 17" MBP at work, but I've seen the 15" unibody in person several times, and I own a early-2008 15" MBP (also anti-glare).

While I wouldn't call the unibody designs "FUGLY" I definitely think they are just not as good as the early-2008 design and is a step backward in many ways (though not all). The really truly ugly thing is the keyboard. The silver keys of the early-2008 look better compared to the black chicklet-style keyboard. Hey, the 80's called, they want their IBM PCjr keyboard back (I had a PCjr, but fortunately had the non-chicklet keyboard). It's cheap looking and looks like a toy keyboard.

Not only that, but the keyboard feels significantly worse and is harder to type on (maybe I just needed to spend more time on it, though), but we're talking about looks here.

I think the glossy with black frame screen looks worse than the silver frame, but fortunately am getting a silver frame with my anti-glare option. Overall I think the completely silver look was much better, despite the fact that it gets discolored over time.

But hey, it's all subjective. I'm more interested in function than looks, but I think I'm going to be disappointed with the keyboard because of the way it functions. It doesn't help that it's ugly either.

The Black Keys make it look off.

They should have either used White Keys or but some Black Glass or Glossy Black Plastic on the top to make it match. (If you are going that far you might as well put a latch so you can service the battery!!!

I think we need Steve back to put the smackdown on Apple.

Even though I have the option to put my Avid keyboard stickers (white shortcuts), Im still happy with the black look.
People, its keyboard keys not a hair-cut ;)
LOL!

From a design and usability perspective I do have the exact same opinion. Anyway - looking forward to your pictures !

The ship date for the 2.66GHz 17" MBP has finally moved from 3-4 weeks to 7-10 days at the online Apple Store! However, if you order the 2.93 the ship date is still "3-4 weeks", and if you order the antiglare option -- even with the 2.66 processor -- the ship date changes to "4-5 weeks".

So the 2.66 glossy ones are the only ones that can be had within 7-10 days as of now, but that's at least better than it was until yesterday, when every model had a ship date of at least 3-4 weeks listed.
