9to5Mac reports that Apple will be finally be releasing a unibody 17" MacBook Pro at Macworld, but with an interesting twist. According to the rumor site, the new laptop will have a super slim non-removable battery. The advantage of the new design will be a more extended run time than current models.
The news is that Apple is making a super slim battery pack for the 17 inch MacBook Pros that will last much longer than current models. Additionally, you won't be able to remove said battery pack. It will be inside the machine, just like iPods and iPhones.
We at MacRumors feel confident that this rumor is likely accurate, as we have heard similar independent whispers.

9to5 also expects that the 13" plastic MacBook will be phased out which may bring the low-end aluminum model closer to $1000.

unless they can make the 17 inch even slimmer.. i dont think they will make the battery non removable. it would be dumb.

Seriously, I don't see this as being a laptop event. Also a 17" PRO machine where the battery can't be easily changed? Doubtful!

I hope the 2.4ghz doesn't go to much cheaper, or I'm going to be mad.😱
Mine is still in transit from the warehouse.

Ah well.
I'm excited for Mac World. Can't wait!

Yaaawwwn. Perfect lack o worthy news to help put me to sleep.
g'night.. 😛

i guess it depends on how much longer it lasts. If it lasts twice as long then i could see it b/c you won't have to carry around a second battery. But if its a marginal increase them its lame and pointless.

Sure

its such a bad idea, i am sure its a fake rumor

If it is true, then Steve Jobs is no longer at Apple anymore, which really could be true

it's plausible, seeing as the macbook air doesnt have a removable battery.

but why put it on ONLY the 17incher and none of the others...

i call bs

I hope apple does not do this! Why do they keep making non removable batteries, I think mobile pro users have several batteries on hand but then again I don't know b/c I'm not a 17" pro user.

Doesn't sound like a likely possibility to me, but although it would be a minus to have a battery that's non-replacable, the plus of it being a much longer lasting battery outweighs the minus. I don't know whether to rate it positive or negative. Aaah!

considering that I'm on my 3rd MBP battery in just over two years I can say I certainly would not buy a MBP with a fixed battery.

This "rumor" doesn't sound so bad to me. An internal battery would not be a problem if the battery life was longer than the current batteries If it was twice as long it would be great.
But I think they battery needs to be user replaceable (no harder than adding ram) to get people to accept an internal battery.

Oh, they'd better not! I'd rather have a removable battery than a larger capacity one... or even better, two batteries in at the same time, so I don't have to shut down the machine to swap batteries.

I can envision a variation on this rumor to be true: CTO options.

Standard 17" MBP comes as they usually do:
- Optical drive
- 1 HDD
- Removeable battery

CTO MBP can remove the optical drive in lieu of an additional internal battery or a second hard drive. With a second battery installed, you'd double your life AND enable live hot-swapping of the easily-accessible battery.

This would make total sense for the high-end machine, and would also jive with the current rumors for how the next Mac Mini will be able to be configured without an optical drive.

No Way! I was waiting for the 17'' model to be released, but I'm definitely not going to buy notebook that has no removable battery.
What's wrong with Apple? A lot of people demanded a removable battery in the iPhone but instead of giving us that they built notebooks that do not have a removable battery either? Lame!

Same thought I had. Why have a removable batt with nicely engineered latches on the MB and 15" MBP then? There's little doubt that the 17" will finally be unibody but the battery bit ... I smells me some bs.

considering that I'm on my 3rd MBP battery in just over years I can say I certainly would not [buy] a MBP with a fix[ed] battery.
You may not but the arguement for that doesn't fly as Apple has already stated that they'll replace the MacBook Air's batteries for $129 with free installation. I would expect them to make a similar statement IF this is true (which I highly doubt).

This sounds like 17" MacBook Air, and if it is, I want one very much. I don't need optical drive nor many ports, but need light weight and large screen.

I highly doubt that, even-thought it sounds more than good.

I think this could be a pretty good idea actually -- imagine if you could get, say eight hours out of one battery charge. And this is on a 17-inch!

Personally, I'm on a 15". But you know how often I carry extra batteries with me? Never. And besides, why would I need an extra battery when I've got the life of two in one?
