I hope apple does not do this! Why do they keep making non removable batteries, I think mobile pro users have several batteries on hand but then again I don't know b/c I'm not a 17" pro user.

ChrisN

Even if you don't keep multiple batteries on hand, the life of a battery does have a limit.

Sooner or later, the battery will stop keeping a charge and need to be replaced. Having to open the case would be a pain.

I was an early adopter the macbook pro, and I have been through so many batteries it it pathetic. The first couple were faulty and apple replaced. The next batch sucked too, but I had to replace them on my dime.

That is why this is a B.A.D. idea. If Apple has a battery recall this could get really expensive in a really short time for them.

And as a consumer... who wants to be without their laptop to get a freakin' battery replaced?

Can you tell I get a little frustrated when the words Apple and batteries are mentioned in the same story?

Seriously, I don't see this as being a laptop event. Also a 17" PRO machine where the battery can't be easily changed? Doubtful!

I see the MacBook Air as nearly a "pro" machine in the sense of the price range but not the specs and it's battery can't be changed.

I can envision a variation on this rumor to be true: CTO options.

Standard 17" MBP comes as they usually do:
- Optical drive
- 1 HDD
- Removeable battery

CTO MBP can remove the optical drive in lieu of an additional internal battery or a second hard drive. With a second battery installed, you'd double your life AND enable live hot-swapping of the easily-accessible battery.

This would make total sense for the high-end machine, and would also jive with the current rumors for how the next Mac Mini will be able to be configured without an optical drive.

I can't see Apple allowing THAT MUCH customization. They might allow the optical drive to be replaced with a second internal hard drive, but not two batteries. That would require a lot of rearranging of the parts on the inside, not to mention reconfiguring power issues among other things.

9to5 also expects that the 13" plastic MacBook will be phased out which may bring the low-end aluminum model closer to $1000.
This is bad news for me, as I'm currently trying to sell my BlackBook. I doubt anyone on the Marketplace on these forums would want to buy my MacBook now. My only hope is craigslist.

I picked a really bad time to sell. Why couldn't I have sold it last week? Now I'm gonna be forced to sell it on CL by Tuesday.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

Isn't that what the MacBook Air is for? I think this might be a bigger Air and not a new MacBook Pro.

I would be very happy if they made this decision in order to make more space for a 2nd HD.

The only way this makes sense would be if Apple has come up with some oddly shaped internal battery that takes up a lot of room and doesn't lend itself to being removable.

Otherwise, assuming the 17" MBP will be taking the same design cues as the 13 and 15" models, it seems silly to not design the battery (and user replaceable hard drive) using the same basic method.

One would have to ask though, if Apple did come up with this, and thought it was superior to a removable battery, why limit this idea to the 17" models? Why wouldn't they have used it with the redesigned 13 and 15" models too?

Doesn't seem quite right.

You could try eBay. Most users there aren't going to be the ones with the latest knowledge or rumor. I'd put it up, say... now! :)

That 17-in sounds cool. I wish I had the money to buy one. I'll probably just have to wait until the 3rd Gen MBP to get one.

No Way! I was waiting for the 17'' model to be released, but I'm definitely not going to buy notebook that has no removable battery.
What's wrong with Apple? A lot of people demanded a removable battery in the iPhone but instead of giving us that they built notebooks that do not have a removable battery either? Lame!

Presently, we're holding onto laptops and replacing batteries every few years when they start to wear down.

Apple wants us to replace the laptop at the same time.

It's almost equivalent to buying a new car when you have to change the oil.

I hope this isn't true. I'm really starting to get concerned over their laptop design choices lately.

Oh god please, please please let there be a damned good reason for making the battery non-removable other than making another ----ing Apple product 'thinner'.

i never ever remove my battery. am always around an ac outlet.

wouldn't bother me one bit if the upside was extended life.

it's plausible, seeing as the macbook air doesnt have a removable battery.

Except that there are reasons why the iPhone, iPods, and Macbook Air have integrated batteries.

There's no REASON to do this on their largest laptop. I don't believe it simply because I see no point. As much as people complain about the iPhone's battery, at least there's a reason they did it.

There's nothing like that here.

Seriously, I don't see this as being a laptop event

Macbook Air
Pervious Macbooks
Powerbooks

Also is Apple now saying people who shell out for their top of the range most expensive laptop cant have interchangable batteries? how can i use it on the way to work and from work now? im going to have to trade down to the 15"!! lost money for Apple then....

I dont think this is going to happen, because everyone knows its the Air's weakness not having an interchangable battery so it will become the Pro's weakness too, also Apple like to keep their product ranges similar, so if the 17" is getting an internal battery, i would think the 15" would be too.

If this turns out to be true, I will officially be done with Apple.

As it looks from your signature (Dual 2.7 PowerMac G5 - 1.67 PowerMac G4 - Black 16 GB iPhone 3G - 1.60 Core Duo Compaq Presario V3020), you aren't buying Apple laptops anyway.

Saying you are "Done with Apple" if they do this, is a tad silly.

Well, at least it's something worth talking about. I'm kinda getting tired of watching my dashboard countdown to the Philnote.
