I've tried a few that are free and work just as well. I used to be a big 1Password guy but I see no use for it anymore. They're going to subscription themselves out of jobs.. lol.

I don’t know. It seems from browsing their info, they do offer some cool features. I just may not be their target audience anymore.

Exactly, lol. People tend to forget its a Business and they will need growth and new avenues and profits. It's not Bitwarden or some community side project lol.
They don't have to. They choose to. Take Literature and Latte, or Devonthink's company. They know what they are and stay small. They don't have to be crazy and try to become a Fortune 500 company at our expense.

Man, I used to be a diehard 1Password guy. When they went to subscriptions I moved to the native iOS function, which has got progressively better.

But not really a solution if you like to use other browsers on a Mac than Safari. Or if you want to use Firefox on Windows.

Which means i still have to use a solution that doesn't want to lock me in.

Currently using LastPass, but probably pretty much the same as 1password...

Except Lastpass is much cheaper. So is Bitwarden. I use it just fine with firefox on mac and windows.

You are familiar with the client base? There are HUGE in the Enterprise. In fact, last I heard, Apple was using 1Password internally. I have not seen any other password manager that has near the Enterprise features.

I know the user base on this forum is almost exclusively personal user. But, your use case isn't the same as everyone elses.

Did you actually notice it hogging resources or are you just generally hating on Electron and other bloated apps that are based on it?

I guess general hating based on a lot of posts here on MR, as it just came out I cannot say from personal experience, I wouldn't trust beta versions with my passwords so I did not participate.

I hope that it isn't a hog, I'm still using it, but Electron apps do not have the greatest reputation. My initial post was clearly a question not a statement of fact. Clearly I upset some fanboys.

We have been using 1Password for several years, haven't thought much about it. After reading all the comments I am going to deep dive and make sure I'm still comfortable using the service.

I really hope that the latest 7.x release continues working in future versions of macOS and iOS. Since removing local vaults, I have decided I will not upgrade, as I do not trust my password vault to be stored in anyone's cloud, including 1Password's. It's sad for me, as I've been a customer since 3.x.

Local vaults no longer supported. So goodbye 1p.
I will not store my passwords on the net

Sad to watch a great company destroy itself. I'd be a loyal purchaser if they still offered the standalone model and private vault support. Makes you look at them a bit sideways, suspect ulterior motives in centralizing our databases... 🤔

I have been a proud supporter of this company since the original version came out… until this one.

The deception and downright lies about moving to a subscription-only model (by the company’s own reps on this very forum), moving away from resource-efficient design, etc. all pushed me away.

It was SO EASY to switch to Bitwarden I’m sorry I didn’t do it sooner when the writing was already on the wall. To hell with 1Password.

"Your passwords are encrypted before you send them to us, we promise"

I actually don't mind subscriptions, as long as they improve the software, but damn I'm not gonna send you my passwords and keys. Add a local storage option.

I have little issue with a subscription model, but no way will I be forced to use their servers for storing my vault. I’ll be starting the search for a successor. Been paying Agile for 9 years (1Password 4) - was great while it lasted.

Literature and Latte has a great app with Scrivener. Version updates do take a tremendous amount of time, and there are some major differences and sync issues between the Mac/Windows/Mobile app versions as well.
AgileBits like you said, chose to be a bigger company than Literature and Latte, Devonthink, etc. AgileBits never said they are going to stay and be some small company. They have every right to grow or not grow as they please just as we do to use or not use their software.

I'm definitely not a fanboy and hate Electron apps as well, but I can say I used the beta and it used less resources based on my activity monitor than version 7 did on MacOS.

Bitwarden has been great, you can try the self-hosted implementation (Used to be called Bitwarden_RS, I've used it before with zero problems.
I find 1password very professional, elegant, and efficient and find it reasonable to pay ~$35-40/year for the consistent development and service they provide with it.

Regarding using Apple Passwords instead of 1Password, I tested switching last month. Until Apple let's you name entries, add multiple domains to the same login, and add passwords that aren't for a website (devices, door codes, etc.) it doesn't even come close to 1Password. I'd love to switch to Apple, especially with Passkeys on the horizon, but currently it's just not a replacement for 1Password for me.

I also tried for about a month or two but it was no use. I got excited after Ventura beta came out and showcased Passkeys. It'll work when Passkeys is adopted, but definitely 1Password reigns for now.
