Does version 8 still allow hosting vaults on iCloud for sync, instead of on their servers? I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere.
That's a local vault and that was a way to sync your local vault yourself. Last time I checked the ability to have your own local vault was removed in 1PW8.

I still don’t understand what makes these password managers more secure like … if you know the master password, you have access to EVERY password instead of maybe the password of one site

Edit: I don’t understand all the downvotes. I was not questioning the tool itself ? I was just wondering. I’d be more scared of my 1Password account being hacked and all the passwords that go along with it than 1 password of 1 random page
You need more than your master password to access 1Password on an unauthorized device. There’s a random master secret that is needed along side your master password.

Honestly don't know what issue people have with them hosting the storage. It's end-to-end encrypted and they cant read your stuff. It also streamlines the product and makes it easier for them to keep the product stable.

And the moaning about Electron while then talking about BitWarden is frankly hilarious. BitWarden is a very, very poor replacement for 1Password. I know because I tried when they first released the Electron beta. Since that time they've dealt with my biggest gripes, the biggest being taking away categories on the left-hand panel. They put those back quite awhile ago. The app is rock solid stable.

I’ll stick with version 7. I paid a one time fee of $49.99 and will use it until it no longer works. I will never pay $36 a year indefinitely for an app that does not justify subscription pricing. Version 7 works perfectly fine.

I don’t mind the subscription - but I don’t want my data on the same server that I use to login to access said data. I moved from 1P to Strongbox and host the Keepass file on iCloud. Only hesitation is I don’t trust Apple/the iCloud network at all since they can’t figure out how to fix bookmark, page, note, etc sync issues after 2 years.

The same, as in "I don't mind the subscription". I'm already on it. No longer supporting passwords not stored on their servers is the deal killer.

My main concern with the cloud only approach is that we need to take it on trust that they have an effective backup solution.

I am genuinely curious for the "I will never store a password in the cloud" crowd. Do you turn off iCloud and more specifically iCloud keychain? If not, you are storing passwords in the cloud?

With 1Password, your passwords are NEVER sent unencrypted. They are encrypted and decrypted locally using a combination of your key and password. Without both of those your passwords can not be decrypted by AgileBits nor anyone else.

I don't use Apple Keychain much, no - it has wireless passwords, but other than that not much. Keychain isn't good enough, and to avoid it interfering with 1password I turn off passwords, credit cards etc from keychain as one of the first steps on a new system setup.

For me, it's also a question of control, not just safety from not being on one of the world's juciest targets.

No contest with the current iCloud Keychain. Install it (try it for 14 days free) and in minutes you will find HOW POWERFUL 1Password is.
Can we declare compensation or other connections, please?

Well, two things. Firstly, you are presumably (hopefully!) using two-factor authentication with a password manager. So a malicious actor would need both your device (which can identify you with biometrics) AND the master password.

But just as importantly, it automates the process of having different randomly generated passwords for each service you use. So if one random website you signed up for 5 years ago is compromised, that loss is siloed off and doesn't allow someone to access all your other accounts.
Plus the user manages the encryption key.

Minimalist password manager looks cool but doesn't offer offline storage nor cross platform like android and windows I appreciate the fast they offer one tie payment
They definitely offer offline storage, as I’ve used it while not connected to the internet. Minimalist utilizes iCloud to sync the database b/w device, and iCloud stores items both locally and in the cloud. You are correct in that it is not cross platform, and I don’t think it will ever be, so that is obviously a rather large minimizing factor.

It looks like an Electron app.

Sad.

They took $620 million dollars in series C funding and they gave their users an electron app.

So very sad.

I realized apple passwords and Secrets was enough to cover my needs.

Happy.

I don't have to deal with 1password ever again.

Priceless.

Thanks for pointing me to Secrets as a replacement to 1Password. I’ve been playing with it for a while now, and it’s great. Amazing how an indie developer can create a streamlined, beautiful app with 90% of 1Password’s core features, no subscriptions, no disingenuous BS to goad you into subscribing, no fuss. Like Tweetbot is to Twitter’s app. Great stuff.

I pay subscription, why I cannot mantain a local vault as in 7 version?

Because the money people that basically own 1Password now:

Gotta Money...

But to be fair, now that the Electron app called 1password 8 now stores all passwords in the cloud we are only ONE hack away from totally password breaches.

! cool !

by which I mean,

Secrets and Apple Password, a great alternative to 1password.

I switched to BitWarden and run my own repository in a docker instance on my Synology, I'm in full control over all of my passwords!

That was my route too a few years ago (replace Synology with TrueNAS) but any password manager is better than no password manager, and 1Password is a good password manager :D

Does 1 Password maintain fixes for previous versions? By chance my subscription just renewed today and I have zero intent to move to version 8. Trying to figure out how to play this.

They went to subscription after I bought the app. I needed a multi-user solution, and their family plan was the price of Netflix, so now they're gone. I went to Bitwarden for free and I couldn't be happier to put 1password in my rear view mirror. I self host and I can give whoever I want access to whatever I want.
What? 1Password Family is $4.99 a month and Netflix is $9.99 for the cheapest 1 stream, non-HD. Yup, same price.

Is that independently verifiable?
