KeePassXC! I was a long time user of 1Password - got at least a dozen people I know to sign up for it back in the day. A lot of them still use it. But me personally? I'm subscription'ed out. I cut 50%+ of my subscriptions over a year ago and 1Password was one of them. Keychain is working fairly well - especially now that it does 2FA and notes (I still wish it had password history). For everything else - KeePassXC ingested the 1Password database I had and has been working pretty well for me. (I do realize it may not work for everyone). But hey, $ saved and it works. I think there's an Apple keychain chrome extension for non-Apple devices too.

For those looking for a replacement password manager, I highly suggest checking out Minimalist Password Manager - http://minimalistpassword.com/. It’s not quite there yet for me, but the developed is unbelievable responsive and the app has grown leaps SSNs bins in a very short period of time.
I’ve finalised my migration from 1P to this last month, and it’s been fantastic. I feel at peace with the one time purchase and not having my password locked behind a subscription. Sync has been impeccable too. The dev is so responsive and listen to its users and grows the product accordingly, it’s such a drastic change from the CEO of 1P telling its users to get bent on Reddit/Twitter.

Why? In detail.

It's faster, cleaner and easier to use. What a horrible update.
Why? Did you use any electron apps? Firstly if the user interface requires back and forward buttons and it's not a browser-like app (Finder or Safari), it means that the interface works like a web app. I don't want the app I use every 20 minutes to be a web app.

Don't be seduced by a refreshed look, you will quickly grow tired of it and will be left with higher memory usage, potential security vectors, slower performance and a lack of native look and feel. For example, I don't think there will be a way to open a single item in a new small window.

I have also noticed the 3 dots button, which means the interface looks cleaner because you will have to access some of these features through this non-standard menu which almost every web app has.

I use Electron apps daily. They work just fine. Teams is the only offender because it's so bad you notice that it's bad.

I like to compare Electron apps to Chinese manufacturing. When people moan about "oh why buy Chinese crap it's all bad" they don't realize China has around 20 levels of quality control, ranging from the stuff you can get on Wish to Apple-quality manufacturing.

Electron apps are the same. Some are trash, some are good, a few are excellent. Agilebits is excellent.

Are they as good as artisanal local products (i.e., native)? Probably not, but native devs are not cheap, especially if they develop for Mac and iOS (I would know, I'm one of them and we're always in high demand).

Tell me you actually haven't tried the new version without telling me you haven't tried the new version.

Not one thing you have stated in this post is true. I have been using the beta for months now and never ONCE used the back/forward buttons. The three dots are no different than many other apps. Every option in that menu is available as a right-click.

As far as the look and feel. You have every right to your OPINION. I am fine with look.

I've used 1password since early 2008... I've bought the traditional versions, I bought the apps for iPhone and IPad (before they ended up with a universal one), and I've even transitioned into the subscription model. With family sharing and available on all platforms, it's not too bad.

However, I'm not going to upgrade this time. Eventually, this means I'll need to find a new password manager even though I've been a happy customer for more than 14 years,

There are two main reasons:

  1. This version will no longer leave me in full control of my passwords. I have to store them on their service, unlike now where it is encrypted files I can share the way I want - iCloud, usb disk, Dropbox, etc. This is a deal breaker to me.
  2. Downgrading from native to electron, the bane of cpu, memory, and battery life everywhere.

I don’t mind the subscription - but I don’t want my data on the same server that I use to login to access said data. I moved from 1P to Strongbox and host the Keepass file on iCloud. Only hesitation is I don’t trust Apple/the iCloud network at all since they can’t figure out how to fix bookmark, page, note, etc sync issues after 2 years.

Knowing that the app is written with Electron is enough for me to know that it's better to stay away. This is a matter of ideology. It's like deciding between processed food and cooking your own dinner. Some people fine with processed food and sometimes you have no other options, but when I can, I always cook. I believe that software should be written with least amount of dependencies as possible and as close to the OS and hardware as possible. I don't believe in a value of cross-platform distribution, as I don't use other platforms myself. But I do care about stuff like system spell checker, system fonts, low CPU usage, the app size, speed of adoption during OS evolution and so on...

Even though you don't use them, the Back and forward button steal valuable screen real-estate. That space could be used for dragging windows around. Good Mac app allow toolbar customisation, but this even lacks in version 7, I am not going to bet on this version.

3-dots menu and context menu are different. I bet there's actions in 1Password 8 which you can only access through this menu. The Mac context menu is a shortcut. You should be able to use a Mac with a single button mouse and every command would be available in a graphic interface without activating context menu. The 3-dot menu is hiding features behind additional click. It's just lazy and shows that the app looses focus.

And with this release AgileBits finally achieves their long-standing goal of stamping out standalone vaults and forcing everyone into their subscription & sync model. They cheerily claim that this is what everyone wants (but it is not).

1Password are not unlike the Gestapo. They provide “protection” at a steep price and on their terms, and don’t give a rats ass what the users actually do and don’t want. They do it their way, because they can, and because people have few alternatives.

Teams is garbage, I've said it many times on this forum. I have no idea why companies keep using that crap over Slack, but I digress. My company's management took one look at Teams (the app) and said hell no.

Discord has a lot of features but usually doesn't go over 1 GB for me even in voice calls.
teams is absolute garbage especially compared to slack, but there's one reason it gets used over slack: its free with o365.

Seriously Macrumors, don’t give AgileBits free press. With 1Password 8, they have royally screwed over there most loyal and long time users. Beyond the move to a subscription only service, being forcing users to store their passwords in the 1Password cloud, 1P8 itself has so many issues as a result of it being a sh**ty Electron app, it’s a borderline travesty. What I found most disheartening is the sheer hubris of the developers, chasing profits at the cost of its most loyal users. Then again, perhaps I shouldn’t be too surprised, as at the end of the day it’s all about the money.

It seems that's the problem there... loyal customers literally do not pay, beyond just once. Another post commented that many companies would've croaked after a certain time AgileBits has been around, but do note that even Apple has pushed their users to subscription services. They were bound to hit a wall with only their hardware sales. FWIW, this ended up being a good thing for me b/c I was able to get a new condition, current gen iPad for $300!

From: https://1password.com/company/

"500+ EMPLOYEES"

So 500 employees got together to make ONE app, and they made it in electron? Like, can you be more lazy?
[shrug] Apple is a $2 trillion company, but the even this site of Apple enthusiasts still seems to have plenty of legit grievances against them

I've been using 1Password for as long as I can remember. I don't have a problem paying for software. Subscription-based software definitely leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but if it meets my needs and is a reasonable cost, then OK.

However my main gripe is being forced to use their cloud service. If I had to pay for a subscription but still got to choose my sync method (local, iCloud Drive, whatever) then I'd sign up. I understand their security posture and have read the papers. I also know that if my data is never put in a given location, it can't be compromised from that location.

Bingo.

I don’t mind paying, I just don’t want to store and sync my data on their servers, period. I would even pay more to host the data elsewhere and/or sync via LAN.

I really don’t get why allowing people to sync via other means, which already exists in their ecosystem, is such a hardline no go for them.

It is really lame and a bit suspicious that 1Password are absolutely hellbent on users storing their password data with them.

I really find the new browser add-on to be very difficult to use. Vault selection is very awkward, the window is not resizable, and the fonts and spacing take a ton of room per entry. The old browser add-on won't work with version 8 of the desktop app.

By my standards, the desktop app is a superior piece of work; the browser add-on is a very inferior piece of work. I use the browser add-on more than the desktop app, so this puts me in a tough spot. If the browser add-on is not improved by the time 1Password 7 is no longer supported, then I'll have to move on to another product.

This is a disingenuous comparison.

There is no shortage of alternatives out there, LastPass and Bitwarden to name a couple.

I switched to BitWarden and run my own repository in a docker instance on my Synology, I'm in full control over all of my passwords!
I tried using Bitwarden last year but I switched back to just using iCloud Keychain because I couldn’t stand how badly it integrated with Safari

I think the 1P integrations are better than everyone else's. The CLI for SSH keys is useful. The ability share passwords with my team is also very nice.

The Electron UI is fine, and now that it works on linux along with other platforms that is an overall win IMO. Electron can work, as shown by VSCode, if companies spend the time on it.

Electron is a downgrade from previous versions. Bitwarden is an electron app I doubt they raised 600 million dollars like 1Password did. 1Password lost its shine it's become "just another password manager" with a clean look. One day they'll be bought by a mega corp and those who trusted them will most likely feel some pain (privacy) just like LastPass.

I have zero problem with the subscription. It keeps the developers going and keeps them releasing ongoing updates. $35 a year is just fine for what I get from it.

I get that many hate subscriptions but it's what keep developers at it. You wouldn't keep working long if you only got paid once and then didn't know if you'd ever get money again. Without a steady stream of revenue, they often don't keep developing and you're left with a dead app with no security or bug fixes, and something that soon doesn't work with the current OS.

The single payment also makes developers more likely to just re-design the look enough more frequently so they can call it 2.0 or 3.0 and charge an upgrade fee. From all the apps I've seen go to subscriptions, they much less frequently do a major redesign that's not needed, and have a much higher focus on bug fixes and feature improvements.

Try the new shortcut window with command+shift+space. It's similar to Alfred but supports more actions.

Much faster than clicking the icon in the browser bar if you're just trying to log in to stuff.

1Password are not unlike the Gestapo
Yuck.

Password manager are super competitive sector, with lots of different options at different prices - 1st party built-in, open source, free, paid, self-hosted, etc. Most, including 1Password, even make it easy for you to export your data and switch if you wish.

If genuinely think 1Passsword's product decisions make them similar to the Gestapo, I respectfully suggest it's time to pop outside for a walk and some fresh air.

Minimalist password manager looks cool but doesn't offer offline storage nor cross platform like android and windows I appreciate the fast they offer one tie payment

Just installed it, including the newer browser extension, witch was way slower.

* They changed keyboard shortcuts and removed features, like revealing password by pressing the option-key?
* The auto fill thing for multi step logins was nice though — when it worked.
* Also clunky UI, non macOS like behavior, but I guess that was to be expected…

Unfortunately 1password is the best there is now from what I know. Tested Bitwarden a while ago and that was a big step down.
