I can also verify that my jailbroken and unlocked iPhone remains in such a state but Cydia and any other apps installed are gone.

2.0.1 also kept my BossPrefs setting to hide the Stocks icon.

I can verify that what you just posted is false. :)

If Cydia and other apps are gone, your iPhone is NOT jailbroken. It can't be, as you just restored a stock Apple firmware without running it through the Pwnage Tool.

Your Stocks icon is still hidden because the BossPrefs tool makes a string change to hide the icon and your backup of your iPhone restored that string. :)

The update is 249.2mb, can this only be bug fixes?!?!

It's the entire firmware. I think this is so if your phone gets rofl'd while you're like on a train or the airplane, you don't have to download the full firmware in order to restore. I guess in the long run, it's better downloading the entire thing rather than just an update.

So what was the size of 2.0 out of curiosity?

218.2 MB

There's widespread compatibility issues with BT as explained/complained baout on numerous threads here, E60 forums and on the Apple discussion forums. These affect many different brands/models/years/configurations of car but mostly consist of 2G 1.1.4 software having been OK and any flavour of iPhone with 2.0 software not OK. You seem to be one if the lucky ones.

My particular issue is it pairs OK but the connection drops and re-establishes every 20 seconds or so and the phone book won't synch, so I’ve just switched Bluetooth off.

I have not had any problems with my edge phone on 2.0. I have an 07 Lexus GS450h. It retained my BT settings after the upgrade for both my car and my wife's. I don't have any connectivity problems at all.

As for phonebook transfer. This is an iPhone issue and has been since day 1. The link to iTunes for transfer prevents address book synching via BT. I agree that this is big limitation, but doubt they'll fix it as they probably want the automakers to incorporate their stuff in the cars to do the synching as opposed to using standard open BT communication like the rest of the world.

This stinks since under GSM I wouldn't hear feedback via my PC speakers at work. Now that it's forced to edge, the buzz came back.

Is there any way to get rid of this. I get that "buzz" in my car but its ridiculously loud and ruins my day.

Apparantly Ferrite Beads from Maplin/Radio Shack on the speaker cable can resolve this. Unfortunately its a "feature" of GSM

Interesting - did you do anything "special" when you first paired the phone? Do you have to do anything (e.g. turn off WiFi) when you use it in your car? When did you get the phone (will try to work out if it's a hardware issue). What version of CIP/Progman do you think you have on the car?

Honestly, I put zero thought into it...

I didn't turn off anything...just turned on BT on my iPhone and my car "found it". Put in a code and I was off and running. I've had numerous conversations of several minutes without any issues.

I purchased my phone on launch day (stood in line 5 hrs :( )

I'm not sure of the answer to your last question...if you can point me in the right direction or where to look I'm happy to check.

iPhone 3G after 2.0.1 update:
- Phone seems much more responsive and things like contacts and SMS lag have disappeared :)
- Safari is quicker/scrolling is smoother :)
- GPS locate me not working :(
- All apps downloaded from the App store crash immediately upon load :(

Not a happy camper.

Update Apps

From what I've been reading around, make sure you update your apps also. With the new 2.0.1 update a lot of apps have needed to be updated also. This could help with those that are having app crashing problems.

For the last time, 249mb is the ENTIRE system. It's not like they run a patcher and diff the entire filesystem with 249mb of changes. It's the same thing as restoring.

Yeah, I finally caught on to that. The long firmware installation surprised me, but I'm glad Apple was thorough with this fix. My iPhone exhibits much less hesitation now (though still more than my Touch did).

One thing that surprised me was when I played the MahJongg app I have: pinching and twirling the screen used to produce really choppy movement. Now the movement is remarkably fluid. The Zen Pinball app still seems to be taxing the processor, though. (And it quickly drains the battery!)

Overall I'm quite happy with the update.

Depends - if you have a UK PAYG one then yes, it will require internet access for activation (mine did).

If you have a contract one, then no it won't need re-activation.

Unfortunately you are wrong. The contract one needs to activate as well. Mine is on the iPhone o2 contract and once the firmware had finished installing, iTunes contacted the iTunes store for activation. The iPhone once ready for use again clearly said on the screen your "iPhone has been activated"

If as you are referring to the users who is not sure about there work firewall, I would wait until you get home as you will not have access to your iPhone until you can reactivate it which is part of the upgrade process at the very end.

I have my laptop with me, with the 2.0.1 upgrade package downloaded from last night, but no internet access here at work.

If I update my iPhone, is it going to have to access iTunes store to reactivate it?

no wait to you have access

After a day

After a full day this is what I can say about the 2.01 release on 3g 16 gig.

Old version:
The first is that I had most problems that everyone had, but in a minor way. My backup time, contact (250 contacts) and sms lag etc were all apparent, but not exaggerated. My contact lag was around 4 seconds. Safari was also choppy when I rotated.

New version:
Contact lag now 2 seconds. Same for SMS. Safari is much smoother in rotation. Backup time is quite ok, around half the time. My 3g bars are less than before.

I have not had any other issues. Still yet to try out gps and bluetooth. wifi seems to be unchanged.

Mine did not need reactivated after the update and no message on screen. Also on o2 contract.

My 2.01 report:

- Install went smoothly. Backup took a while (maybe 1 hr for entire install)

- Safari runs MUCH faster and smoother. Page loads and renders are noticeably better over wifi, 3G and Edge. Seems like twice as fast, seriously. I think I'm seeing an improvement on the processing/rendering side, not necessarily in the cell radio.

- Landscape / portrait switching is much faster in Safari. Safari is more reliable in landscape mode now as well (it crashed on me before).

- Text entry in Safari (in a web form like this post box) no longer lags.

- Contacts and calendar are faster but there's definitely still lag.

- Browsing the home page is faster.

- In general the entire UI seems snappier.

I will give this one two thumbs up! But they do still need to work on Contacts.

I have not had any issues with my BT , on my old iPhone edge or my new Iphone 3G
I drive a BMW M5 2007. pairing was painless:):):):):):):):):):):)

BMW M5, Best Car in the World? I think so. :) ..... You have to see Jeremy's M5 road test on Top Gear,(ALL OF IT)... AMAZING.

After 2.01 all seems good. But still no triangulation.

DL'ed and installed last night. Went perfectly smoothly on my 1st gen iPhone, and only took about 10 minutes to install and restart. No immediately noticeable effect, tho.

This 2.0 software is a JOKE.

Apps crashing, INCREDIBLY SLOW USER INPUT (SMS, etc.), Phone calls dropping like penny stocks, interface lags in contacts, etc.

AND THIS UPDATE DID NOT FIX ANYTHING REGARDING SMS...

WHO IS WRITING THIS CRAPPY ASS SOFTWARE? MICROSOFT?

The last version of the 1.x software was fast, STABLE, and a JOY to use.

THIS MAKES ME WANT TO THROW THE FREAKING PHONE AT SOMEBODY.

I can type 40-60 words per minute in SMS.

Easy to do in 1.x.

EVEN AFTER THIS UPDATE... I'll have finished typing a sentence... and the damn keystrokes haven't even finished yet.

WHEN I CAN TYPE FASTER THAN THE DEVICE SOMETHING IS HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY WRONG.

Get your head out of your ASS Steve Jobs and run the freakin' company like it's APPLE, and not DAEWOO Motors.

You know, STEVE... I once heard you defend your higher-than-everyone-else prices by stating that "Nobody complains how expensive a Porsche is..."

Well, STEVE... when you buy a PORSCHE... the WHEELS DONT FREAKIN FALL OFF THE CAR AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE IT OFF THE LOT!

STOP DRINKING YOUR OWN KOOL-AID AND GIVE US SOMETHING THAT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I can confirm viewing contacts via an exchange 2003 server is quicker albeit not by much.

I've also noticed reduced 3G reception.

I've had some calls that were dropped under 3G due to a low signal. My guess is they increased the 3G service threshold to reduce dropped call by forcing you to edge service in weak areas.

This stinks since under GSM I wouldn't hear feedback via my PC speakers at work. Now that it's forced to edge, the buzz came back.

"My guess is they increased the 3G service threshold to reduce dropped call by forcing you to edge service in weak areas"

Good point, best explanation I've heard yet about the 3G issues, which I've experienced.

sell your phone and get a razorrrr

Why would he do that?

Just because he purchased something and EXPECTS IT TO WORK AS ADVERTISED, he should just "sell" it... instead of HOLDING THE MAKERS FEET TO THE FIRE?

GROW UP, JESUS.
