why in the world can't their software update begin backing up the phone while the software is downloading...

Just updated my iPhone 3G. The backup took about 2 minutes. 2.0.1 is much better, the keypad lag that 2.0.0 had is gone. And lags that I seen in iPod and Safari is gone.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 8gb: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

I don't know about keyboard lag but finally sync time is back to a reasonable measure from what it was before.

Mail deletion

I admit I have not read the entire thread, so this may have been brought up before, but I can no longer delete an email message that is displayed. Deleting from the list works fine.

Previously I posted that I'm seeing better software performance across the board with the 2.01 update. Not perfect but much improved, especially Safari. Now I'm at work and I can add that the cell radio seems to be performing better as well. Not that it pulls a stronger signal or anything, but that it's more intelligent about how it handles fringe areas. My office is on the fringe between weak 3G and strong EDGE. Before 2.01, it would hang on to 3G with zero bars but typically it couldn't access the internet and I'd get an error when using Safari or mail. It would also eat battery as it continuously switched protocols. I'd have to force EDGE for the phone to work right while in my office.

After 2.01, this is much improved. It still struggles to maintain a 3G connection here, but when it shows 3G, 3G data actually works, and when the signal gets weak enough, it switches to EDGE and continues the download. The switch between 3G and EDGE is faster too - data download only pauses for a few seconds rather than much longer or even a fail.

Seems like there's still some room for improvement in this, but it's much better than before, at least for me.

Well I can confirm viewing contacts via an exchange 2003 server is quicker albeit not by much.

I've also noticed reduced 3G reception.

I've had some calls that were dropped under 3G due to a low signal. My guess is they increased the 3G service threshold to reduce dropped call by forcing you to edge service in weak areas.

This stinks since under GSM I wouldn't hear feedback via my PC speakers at work. Now that it's forced to edge, the buzz came back.

I reckon Apple must have simply reduced the power used to achieve a stronger signal and increase battery power. If that makes any sense. When the signal is weak, the phone has to use more power to connect, so by programming the phone not to make the extra effort, power consumption is probably reduced.

Of course its all speculation, but on a previous 3g phone I had whenever I was in a weak signal area, my battery died pretty quickly... And since some of the iphone's latest criticism has been related to battery life, I believe it certainly is a possibility...

is gps on 3g working for anyone??

It's working for me outdoors, but nothing in(and I used to get an relatively innacurate location indoors until yesterday)... I think its not using the tower triangulation and wifi methods for some reason... I only say it because it takes quite a while to get a location now...

my backing up took a long time before, its taking LONGER now.. wtf.

i did the initial long back up last night, i thought that was IT, but im watching it now and its quite long again... hopefully after this its all better.

I get very weak 3G reception at home (typically 1 bar, -113 dBm in field test mode). No discernible change with the update. However, at work I used to have a SOLID 5 bars. Today, after the update, I'm fluctuating quite rapidly between 2-5 bars, even while the phone is just sitting on my desk.

I'm hoping it's just a difference in how the signal level is being REPORTED, rather than a tangible decrease in reception.

As far as GPS, it's locating me pretty quickly while indoors, but it's just bringing up a very small circle in my general area (a radius of probably 50-75 meters) rather than a blue dot. That's not typical for this location.

I just reset my phone and all seems to be well, i agree on the GPS indoors. I usually get a pretty wide circle ranging about half a mile in diameter.

Is it jsut me or is apple releasing great products before they are ready? SJ admitted it about MobileMe, but 2.0.1 should have been 2.0! did they not do any testing before the iPhone3g came out??

i now somewhat miss my jailbroken 1.1.4 old iphone. :(

Unbelievable how quick this thread grew... and uhh..... ZOMGSSS!!!! 242MB for this little bug fix thang!!? WTFPEANUTBUTTER!! Man o man if people would put the 3+ hours in and read the thread we wouldn't be seeing the same things over and over...

Now, on to the review.

SMS - Opening lag has been decreased but is still there. Takes somewhere around 3 seconds for the list of conversations to come up. Same goes for if you already have a conversation open. This is disappointing, but the improvement is definitely appreciated. Typing lag has been completely eliminated.

Calendar - Also a 2-3 second delay. Nothing changed.

Contacts - HUGE improvement. Can't say the lag is completely gone, but most of the time it's unnoticed. I'm able to scroll immediately with 139 contacts.

Settings Menu - Scrolling is still a bit choppy. This is the only app in which I've noticed this.

Annnnnnnd Safari - Portrait to landscape switch is smooth as silk, even when the page is loading. Nice. Scrolling is smooth and the typing lag is a thing of the past, unless the page is loading which is understandable. I always hit the "x" before I start typing anyway.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this update. 2.0's behavior was very uncharacteristic of usual iPhone firmware and it seems Apple's taking the time to get it back up to standards. I'm sure all the naysayers will be satisfied with the rollout of 2.1.

After updating my phone crashed and I had to restore my phone. Also my contacts and calendar aren't getting synced through mobile me.

Hey All,
iPhone definitely snappier as everyone is saying but now I get no signal on my drive to work and at the office on 2g or whatever the heck you call it. I live on the outskirts of Victoria and work in a small community called Sooke. Before the update I could drive all the way to work and have 2 to 3 bars except in one small area where I would loose coverage. Now none anywhere and the only time I get any coverage it brings in AT&T from the good ol USA. WTF Apple !!!!!!!!!! Cant you just get it right, yeah my wifi works better but my F'n phone is a write off until they fix it with the next update which hopefully will be soon.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings

I think im sticking with my 2.0 software. Its not that bad for me. I like my 4-5 bars everywhere i go 3G reception. Heres to 2.1 update!!!!! Im waiting for u!!!!

Forgot to mention that I'm on the 1st gen phone.

And my LocateMe function on maps is working but far from precise. I wouldn't expect much more from EDGE, but I don't really use maps for that purpose anyway. So no big deal.

And what's with this "[current app] would like to use your current location" crap? I just hit the locate me button. Obviously I want it to use my location. This seems very Windows Vista-esque. Not cool. It was introduced in 2.0 and is pretty annoying. Anybody know if you can disable this?

Anyone on the 1st gen iphone get the 2.0.1 update? Whats the results?

I've been dumped back to the home screen on 2 occasions so far. Once from Safari, and once after prolonged browsing on the app store.

I'm also still getting keyboard lag in some web forms but not all. This forum seems fine, though it can lag a little at speed, but posting on the Apple forum is very laggy. Perception of lag is or course subjective, as we're all using the same firmware, so it's unlikely that mine lags any more/less than anyone elses.

The 2.0.1 update worked just fine for me. my overall experience is that the phone is much faster now, especially when scrolling through contacts and typing sms. 3rd party apps are als more stable, eg super monkey ball starts without any crashes, at 2.0.0 I had to do a restart to start the game.

the most of the time I have 3G disabled, at home I have bad 3G reception, at GPRS five bars, if necessary I connect quickly to my WLAN at home.

I can only recommend the update. I'm from Austria and use a totally unlocked iPhone from Italy.

Much better on my original iphone. The memory leak appears to be gone and everything is much snappier. Haven't had a crash yet. Battery life also seems to be better after a few hours of using it.

On itunes, the update all button now works, though I saw some display weirdness when I checked for updates. I had 6 updates available but it displayed the same app multiple times. Will have to check on this again later.

I can verify that what you just posted is false. :)

If Cydia and other apps are gone, your iPhone is NOT jailbroken. It can't be, as you just restored a stock Apple firmware without running it through the Pwnage Tool.

Your Stocks icon is still hidden because the BossPrefs tool makes a string change to hide the icon and your backup of your iPhone restored that string. :)
I was Jailbroke, I did the update, there were still "remnants" of the jailbreak, but they were no longer functional. I restored to virgin 2.0.1 and will wait pwnage update. I have more 3G bars, but it drops to EDGE even faster now than before.

I can delete just fine from the list and when in the email.

Also, anyone knows was there an update on the multitouch in general? The keyboard seems a lot nicer (more responsive), and then when looking at the list of emails, the swipe to delete works much better. Before I always had a hard time getting it to recognize my swipe to bring up the delete button. It always thought it was a click and opens the email. Now it works perfectly every time.

Just installed it on my touch, so far so good, I haven't had any crashes yet, particularly on the music app. That was my one big problem with 2.0 and they managed to fix that, but I am still noticing a slight lag on the keyboard responsiveness, but not as bad as beforehand.

Still lagging for me. I have restored twice and I don't have a clue why my lag isn't going away. I only have *3* apps installed and 96 contacts. I also needed to delete and re-install every one of my apps to get them to work. Who knows?!?!?!
