She's a brick...Error 6...

Update: So my techie coworker who also has an iphone 3G and macbook had a copy of the 2.0 software, and was able to restore my phone to that successfully using my computer and USB cable, but restoring the software off of his USB drive. Then iTunes wanted to repeatedly restore from my back-up, even after it was restored. It restored & synced eventually...he decided to try the 2.0.1 update again, which once again bricked my phone. He WAS able to install the 2.0.1 software successfully from his USB drive, using my computer. So apparently my computer just didn't like the update it downloaded? Doesn't seem to be a USB issues, exactly...

I'm just glad it's finally working again, but will definitely think twice before installing the next update. At least now I have a copy of the 2.0.1 software in case I need to restore to that during the next update. Hint: if you hold down Option + Right-click on the Restore button, you can browse for the file you want to restore from instead of just using the file iTunes wants to use.

Worst updating experience ever. I hope the Snappiness is worth it once I have time to play with the phone again. At least I don't have to visit the Apple store. (Never thought I'd say that...)

I can't get this to work for the life of me. All the files are grayed out and I can't select anything. What am I missing? I really want to downgrade.

Maybe you should go to Home>Library>iTunes>iPhone Software Updates and trash all the firmwares (or the 2.0/2.0.1 ones) in that folder so iTunes re-downloads a fresh copy from Apple server.

Also might want to trash the files from Home>Library>iTunes>Device Support

I installed, phone became VERY laggy which I have never experienced before. Going from app to app was very slow. Going to home screen was very slow. Eventually got the white screen of death. Phone would not reboot or anything. I had to restore. Phone worked OK after restore, but not as good as with 2.0. It's starting to get laggy again and I think I will need to restore again.

If it's possible, I will go back to 2.0 because 2.0.1 just messed my phone up. Oh yeah, my reception is WORSE, if that's even possible.

I love this device, but I've already returned one phone because of dropping calls when going from 3G to EDGE (yeah, I can turn off 3G but I don't want to and shouldn't have to - it's called iPhone 3G for a reason) and I'm getting sick of spending so much time on this. I just want to use the friggin' thing. Whatever happened to 'It Just Works?'

my sentiments exactly!!!!!!
Good lord I feel like I am back in XP land with this thing constantly reinstalling the operating system... (ok, venting over):(

Hmmm....thanks for this but tried and did not work. Can't select any of the files in the folder. Any ideas?
When you say this, what do you mean? You're not getting the browse window to find the file? If not, then gcdc gives the answer (thanks gcdc) I don't think I was very clear in my post.

Ah! I 'believe' this is the whole "Safari messing with the download" problem. (someone shout out if I'm wrong!)

Did you download with Safari? If so, I believe it tries to extract the file, or make it a zip, or otherwise do something to the file. Download the file fresh and make sure it is an "ipsw" file, iTunes will not accept any other file type.

Try this and let us know.

I still notice my backups taking forever with 2.0.1., this time I am letting it run without hitting the x. Hopefully after the full backup the incremental ones will be quicker.

My battery life with 2.0.1 (WiFi, 3G, push Exchange and GPS on) is significantly better than 2.0.0 with the GPS off (and all others on). Not sure what they did--hopefully it's not just an insensitive battery meter--but it's working!

Have you gone through and downloaded all the applications you have on your phone manually via itunes? This seems to solve the problem for many.

after Upgrading to 2.0.1 (8gb black 3g acquired on July 11th) I had reported that my battery life was decreased by at least 50%.
After some investigating(turned off: 3g, wifi, bluetooth and email fetch), the power was still draining fast and my usage and standby were almost the same.
After a couple hours i noticed I was not getting any emails on my IP. I would hit the button to check and the spinnign indicator did not show up. So i went into each of my accounts and at the bottom it said "connecting"! It would not stop doing this no matter what I tried.
So I decided to delete ALL my email accounts and re enter them one by one.
While doing this i noticed that for some reason the IP had duplicated ALL my SMTP servers at least 3 times. My list was about 17 SMTP servers long (when it should have been about 5 (maybe six including the ATT Server). Very strange. Half of them were turned on and half of them has SSL turned on too (i dont use SSL).
Not sure what to make of this but it is strange. I have since removed ALL of the smtp servers and created 3 new ones. my phone has a full charge now and im going to find out soon if something is still not right.

Actually I didn't need to. I just had to restore the phone yesterday because initially all my third party apps would not run after installing 2.0.1 and all my Ipod library was gone. So I did a complete restore and all the apps are the ones from Itunes.

Some people are stuck on this warped theory that it is everyone else's fault but theirs!!! Seems like American ideology is spreading like a disease....

LOL. You are correct. It blows my mind all the problems listed by a few that did not know what they were doing in the 1st place.

I installed 2.0.1 on my 3G in 15 min.

My experience:

Backups in half the time.
No more lags in typing/tapping/sliding.
Brings up pages faster
Safari is much faster
Did the 3G off/on to revive GPS (works better now tracking on the highway.)
Contacts browsing, etc are much faster now.
Apps run better
Smoother transitions between Edge,3G, and Wi-Fi.

Dropped calls? If you were not expecting it with at&t you were uninformed.

2.0.1 is an excellent fix. Learn how to use your hardware. :apple:

From what I've been reading around, make sure you update your apps also. With the new 2.0.1 update a lot of apps have needed to be updated also. This could help with those that are having app crashing problems.

This solved my problem. I deleted my Facebook application and reinstalled it and magically the rest of the applications I had downloaded worked too. *shrugs*

The vastly different experiences before, during, and after the update is amazing!

application installation process is still slower. what's casually happened is that sometimes you have to leave the place where you download, install app. during installation process, if you just turn off. next time you try to reinstall, it won't work. apple logo is shown forever. only you have to connect with itunes to make it recognized. it takes a long time, too. it must be fix no matter what. so once you begin to process installation, don't turn off, wait for finishing it.

anyway, 2.0.1 seems to focus on stability. it is still lagging, not so fast. but one thing I have experienced is no crash so far.

I have had the exact same experience! The only difference is that I leave everything on. That was my whole point in upgrading. I leave the location services, 3G and Push on at all times. After using it all day, I still have 3/4 of my battery left! This fix even helped with my 3G reception. Much better now. Every other improvement you noted I have as well. Excellent fix! :D:apple::D

Has anyone else noticed a degraded color quality on iPod album art and Camera Roll thumbnails? They look like 256 color GIFs. You can clearly see discolored pixels where it was unable to find the correct color to match the palette, so it just used the closest one.

This is something I noticed as soon as the 2.0.1 update was finished and I went scrounging. I hope it's not just me. If it's always been that way, just let me know, I probably overlooked it in awe of having an iPhone, but noticed it once I updated and was looking for problems.

Sounds like these Apps are causing some of the problems. Is anyone who has never installed Apps on their iPhone having the same problems?

Another drawback to not being able to remove the battery: some of you mentioned the phone freezing up. When my RAZR phone used to freeze, I would just take the battery out and put the battery back in and restart it. With the iPhone, you cannot take the battery out. Now what are you supposed to do ??????????:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Hold the sleep button and the home button until you see the Apple logo.

I am also in the UK and I find the opposite. If I am in WiFi, it will sit there for a long while trying to locate (although I am inside at the time) so that is fair enough (no GPS signal). However as soon as I go outside I get a lock very quickly. It was tracking me on the overground tube sections really well yesterday - within metres.

I'm on the same boat probably on the very same river in the UK... I'd venture to say that tower triangulation and wifi location are definately gone(hence no indoors location)... Agps is working great though...

That definitely fixed my problem. My phone is now getting better battery life since I fixed the email snafu.
Since I unplugged I have 1 hour 17 mins usage and 13 hours 39 mins standby and about 80% battery left.
I really wonder why it duplicated so many SMTP servers. I know im no genius but i know for a fact (or i have some split personality disorder and lose concious awareness),that I did not accidentally enter 15 SMTP servers;).
