Yes you can watch

I am really amazed that nobody believes that 3GHZ G5s are possible right now. Cause they are coming. Apple will be arranging the line-up a bit differently though. Instead of the 3 speeds, there will be 4. You are going to have to pay though, because this 4th model (3GHZ) is going to be more expensive then any current top of the line G5. It will stay that way even as the lower 3 models change. Wait and see. You're welcome.

3 ghz are still in beta stages. The main problem apple and ibm have faced is cooling, but luckely the 3 ghz is a 90 nm so it does not require 900000000 fans *sigh*. I know this cause im special :D

if you have been a mac user long enough, you have seen macs have the better clock speed, then see pcs catch up, and then see them surpass the macs by a lot, and then see the macs make feeble attempts at catching up

we are now so used to being so far behind the pc world's fast clock speeds that most of us do not even dare to hope for 3 ghz in january

when we do hit 3 ghz, i don't think clock speed will be the main factor people look at when buying a computer...i remember when amd put out a 1 ghz desktop processor...that was huge when it happened and the macs were nowhere near that point

Since you appear to be posting the same information in multiple forums, I will pose my questions to you in these forums as well.

To be making the bold claims that you are posting here, I think it's reasonable to ask for some sort of substance to back up your claims. "I just know" or "there was a leak" or "I can't tell you right now" simply does not cut it.

If you went on these threads and said, "I THINK this is what MIGHT happen", then that would be different, but since you're claiming what you're saying is gospel and 100% absolute fact, I think it is reasonable to ask for more information before anyone takes you seriously.

Please back up your claims, provide us with some more substantial information and the members of this forum might take you a little more seriously. If you do not provide more information, avoid these questions by saying, "That's all I can say for now", or simply ignore this post, I can gaurantee you that most members will see that as a sure sign that you are indeed not as informed as you claim to be, and your credibility will be next to zero.

hey, we are mac users and many of us love to hinge on the words of steve jobs, who from his foot in the mouth syndrome and reality distortion field, has no credibility with the IT field on the pc side

bill gates may be a monopolist and sneak, but he does not think 1 + 1 = 3 like our steve jobs;) :p

Sorry jefhatfield, my comment was directed toweard NeatGekko's claims that what he is saying is fact and absolutely the way things are. I was just saying that if you cannot back up claims like this, your credibility will be down the tubes, and I think it's reasonable to ask for some more information when agressive statements like this are made.

I'm sorry, I don't see why you quoted my post in your above comment - the 2 don't seem to go together... ;)

I just cant imagine dual 3gHz at MWSF. Thats just too much of a jump. Dual 2.6? Sure. Thats what I'm hoping for. (and saving for)

SJ said 3ghz within a year, so expect them at the end of the summer.

2.6 is a good thing to save for

The 2.6 will be positioned in the same way (slightly lower price.) While the new 3GHZ will be in a category all its own. The reason why 3GHZ is not as amazing as everyone thinks, is because apple was contemplating the release of the 2.6 in oct, but decided against it for what purpose....THE BIG 3GHZ announcement in Jan. Heads up folks, they are coming.

steve jobs said that "the gforce 2 is ideal for games" (interview from some mac gameng site)

dont go on what get's said by steve

personally i'm expecting video ipod's 2ghz imacs 3ghz powermacs xserve g5's (+ speed bumps for powerbooks, ibooks and emacs)

OMG

Updates

Wouldn't Apple be trying to protect high end users somewhat? If they were to release new high end duals too quickly they would be pushing the price down on the second hand market and making new buyers unsure of purchasing if there was a trend for models with MAJOR speed bumps every 6 months.

yes I agree, that is wut the x86 market was doing for a while (until the 3.2 ghz stall recently) but macs are different, you buy a mac you can use it for years and years and years, my beige g3 is perfectly fine for me, and probably 50% of other mac users. Even though higher speeds are coming fast it will not make your computer any slower, especialy since apple still has the low end emac and ibook users they cant make the os too bloated yet.

How many times does this need to be addressed. There aren't 9 fans so that they can all run at full speed just to keep the thing barely in spec. My Athlon has a Good size CPU fan, a power supply fan, a back case fan, and one in the bottom (I've got 'lifter feet' for air flow). My CPU runs at around 65° C. The Dual 2GHz G5 [that I just packed up for a lan party tonight] runs the front CPU fans so slow that you can see the individual blades during operation.. yet the CPUs maxed out at 117° F during about 3 hours of Halo.
65° C = 149° F ... 32° less than the G5 without the screaming fans (yes, my Athlon fans scream.. with 2 thermaltake silent case fans, an Antec PS with variable speed fan, and a stock AMD heat sink (much quieter than the thermaltake mini super orb heat sink))

There aren't 9 fans in a G5 because it's soo hard to cool. The fans run very slow during operation and the cpus run very cool even under load. There are 9 fans so that they can run slowly and quietly.

Interesting note:
I finally got a chance to dis-assemble the G5.. just to see what's going on inside.
There are actually 2 heat pipes in each heat sink. They are U shapped so 4 ends protrude to right under the "G5" logo cap.
I tired to get the heat sink off to see what's underneath but it's secured with a bunch of phillips screws that require a rather long #2 screwdriver to get at. It also appears that the cpu may be bottom screwed into the bottom of the heat sink... looks like the CPUs may be on modules again. Not sure yet.

uhhhg

You could not tell the 90000....so on fans thing wus a joke. Lighten up man, jeeze. The fact is apple really needs to get a better way of cooling other than fans. With the 90 nm g5's comin out soon that will help alot. Wont they be somewhere crazy like 25% cooler or sumtin like that? That will allow less fans, which might possibly allow for a few more drive bays.

Cant wait till they invent a processor that is so cool that you can actualy touch without burning.

I just hope the 90 nm g5's has a little better OF though. The g5 at the local apple store had about 3 g5's set up and all of them except for 1 had corrupted open firmware, and the loud annoying fan speed(when you normaly open up the case its suppose to click on) wus always on. At least the most recent OF upgrade (OF 5. sumtin) helped wit this a little bit.

And, a little off topic but that dell commercial were they say they got service and reliability A+ from pcworld magazine. I had that same issue and it clearly says A for dell and A+ for apple. Stupid liers!

THIS IS A FACT

I agree with Mr. Gecko..... we should get 3ghz or close to it at MWSF....because SJ wouldn't have promised faster g5s by next summer unless he had some pretty convincing evidence in hand. Meaning... I think when the g5s were announced, the 3.0s were in final testing........

And these dual 1.8s were a quick way to get rid of the chips Apple contracted with IBM to take.

new gear and software are introduced all the time, macworld or not

we cannot afford to wait for new gear only at macworlds like it used to be until 2001...somewhere along the line, apple decided to step it up and introduce stuff as often as possible and we have come really far in narrowing the ghz gap and speed differential

there still is a long ways to go as the previous issue of macworld has shown us in MAC VS. PC cover issue...intel and amd still lead the way in processor technology

i doubt that we will hear an announcement of a 3 ghz g5 in a couple days, but it would take several surprise announcements like that over next year before i can honestly tell my pc friends that the mac has caught up

Well, duh. That is correct, and how it is. I was only correcting the previous poster's miss-truth.

Intel's tech is very old still. AMD should always be counted as the leader is processor tech. Mostly because IBM makes their stuff in their own plants. I seriously doubt intel will EVER catch up to amd and ibm. Xeon processor oh big deal, have u ever used a quad xeon machine, THEY SUCK. They lag terribly, their processors are not syncronized like the dual powermacs or the dual opertons. Heck, even the dual xeons suck.

Concerning neat geckos

I think we shouldn´t underestimate people like Gecko. There was once a user who posted the specs and that pic of the MDD G4 before it was out. Okay, Apple Legal got him in the end, but then again he took pics and stuff

I still remember very well that around October 2002, when PPC970 discussions were cooking, some guy appeared and said he has reliable information from an IBM rep and that "it´s a done deal"... this sounds very much like gecko, although he doesnt give a hint to his source.

Anyway. I don´t expect it to happen, but if Steve announces this "speed bump" as one more thing, the crowd will storm the front and want one of those ASAP.

Re: Yes you can watch

I'm pretty amazed my self at the lowballing that some seem to be committed to. Apple and IBM from all sources seem to have the ability to deliver a 3GHz machine today. The question is will they do that or will they try to manipulate the market like Intel does.

I can fully understand why Apple and IBM would have been conservative in this first release of their 970 / G5 machines. After all they where fast enough to make claims but still slow enough that they can feel comfortable with all the new technology. It really is time to pull out the stops and to deliver a significnatly faster machine.

I do imagine though that they will screw us on price. That is they will try to increase the price of the top of the line machine. I havea hard time seeing 4 models being offered. Unless of course one of those is a small form factor machine.

Reality is though that we only have a few days until the expo. Personally I think over the next two months we will see a huge number of release from Apple, the expo is just the start of good things.

Well, SJ promised 3Ghz by summer... and for the most part, I will only hold him to that... anything extra or earlier is good news.

2.5-2.6Ghz should be possible in quantity by this point or they are lagging behind their goal, so I personally expect 2.6Ghz machines to be available sometime soon.

They already have. Lots of them. I have one thats been out for years and it still works. It is a 386DX-33 from Intel. :) When I jumped to a 486DX-33 it sprouted one of those spikey little heat sinks.. ?

While I don't doubt that 3 ghz is a possibility, I don't think Apple will jump 50% in processor speed in just 6 months. Actually, considering that the dual 2 ghzs didn't ship until mid-October, it'll have been under three months from when they were shipping to when they're replaced.

Also, I'm somewhat skeptical that MWSF is the place where Jobs will release new PMs. I have to go with Thinksecret in their projection that no new PMs or Xserves will be introduced. The show will be action-packed enough with iPod-related announcements and iLife updates.
