What if the g5 goes up to 3.2 ghz, that means he was wrong cuase there were no 3 ghz machines, only 3.2 :D

I thought about this possibility -- but I consider it pretty unlikely. There's something alluring about having a machine with an "upper barrier" that's a nice round integer like 3...

Given Apple's penchant for things looking sleek, I'm sure they'll want to make their specs on their web site look equally sleek.

I doubt it's even close...

EDIT: nope, it's not. "Have u ever been drunk?" has over 2100 replies. This thread doesn't yet even have 500 replies.

'Nuff said.

(In case you were wondering, other "real rumors" threads have beaten this one as well...the mini iPods thread has nearly 700 replies.)

I sure hope Apple blows us out of the water with this update....a nice surprise of a 2.8 GHz, or even a 3.0GHz would be sweet. What do you guys think the possibility of that big of a jump is? Is it even possible? Also, will the FSB's still be running at half the processor speed? Or is there some sort of limitation on how that speed scales?

Sorry. There is no evidence that the new G5 form factor has a ceiling of 3GHz, and there is evidence that it has already been clocked beyond 3GHz.

What are all you going to say when Neatgekko is right? I personally dont post much if at all but I will say that I hope and honestly believe he's going to be right. The funny thing is - if he is, all of you will be private emailing him about future updates asking him every possible question you can think of regarding future mac products. And if he's wrong hey...too bad.

New Est. Ship Dates from the Apple Store

For the last month, the Apple Store has had "Same bus. day" listed for the G5 estimated ship times. I looked on Friday and it was still the same. However, I just checked, and the Dual G5s are now listed at "1-3 bus. days" and there are no refurbished machines in sight. The single 1.6 is still "Same bus. day", and the single 1.8 is still being sold as new under Special Deals. Regardless, a change in ship times at the Apple Store often symbolize upcoming announcements. Considering the rumor mill for the last month, I hesitate to get my hopes up, but this is as good a reason as any.

I thought everyone knew that Apple is no longer going to make computers. The 2 Ghz is the last and greatest computer they'll make. From here on out it's only iPods and iPod mini's. Steve has too much to do with Pixar and has decided that Linux is the future of OS X.

Dude, aside from the fact that you referred to "evidence" but cited nothing -- YOU COMPLETELY MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF MY POST.

It has nothing at all to do with what the chips are "clocked" at. It has to do with MARKETING. As you would learn if you'd ever taken any sort of class on marketing in the technology sector, and as Apple's own sales tactics have demonstrated, there is an appeal for a nice round integer.

This has nothing to do with physical capabilities.

You know, even a bad marksman will hit the bullseye once in a while.

Statistically (assuming he's really trying) it's impossible for him to keep trying to shoot at it and always miss it.

Round integers are preferred but not always possible.

When you bus speeds are multiples of things like 133 and 166, you're gonna get some funky processor speeds as a result....

Confucious say, I didn't know whether you knew the bus speeds affected the processor speeds or not...

woof! :)

Yes.

I'm older (in member years) so I'm always right.

For what ever it's worth, I placed my order for a dual 2.0 ghz with a 23" cinema display one week ago today. My order as of yet is still "OPEN" and has an expected ship date of 2/13/04.
I got tired of waiting for speed bumped G5s and now I still have to wait :(.

Only one week?

My order was placed two months ago. Still waiting. On checking the order yesterday, the G5 had been cancelled, and re-ordered. I excitedly checked all the product codes - but they were all the same.

Most of the on-line resellers seem to be out of G5 Duals. Either there's news (today, it's a Tuesday... :) ) or Apple's stock and inventory control systems are shot to pieces.

(I won't even mention the extra charges that have suddenly appeared on my bank statement from Apple.... Customer Servies, here I come.)

WOW. I feel for you...:)

Sometimes I just can't believe what they're doing. As a long time Mac user (now 20 years) sometimes I'm amazed at their nonsense. To force an existing user wait 2 months for a product IN THE MIDDLE OF IT'S PRODUCT LIFE just seems like a textbook example of how NOT to run a business.

If it would be any business other than Apple, most of the people on this site would be screaming bloody murder, but for Apple, the feeling is - they're just having problems, give them a break!

Hmmm....I just went to the Apple Store and configured a fully optioned Dual 2.0 Ghz and a 23" Cinema Display to check out the delivery time. The CPU is listed as 3-5 business days and the display is same day! Your estimated ship date is closer to 8 business days. Still close to the current projected turn time.

What I'm having a tough time believing is why ANYBODY'S order should still be unfulfilled after 2 MONTHS. Sorry to say, but that sounds just a little bit fishy.

Where did you look? CompUSA, MacConnection, Mac Zone, Mac Warehouse and the Apple on-line store all list both the 1.8 and 2.0 G5 as in stock and ready to ship.
