20" and 24" iMacs Due Mid-to-Late Summer

releasing the new imacs this soon doesn't sound to right... It's good, but it shouldn't happen, the only thing that will be change IMO is a speed bump, or price cut's, and drop the 17ich...
If they did release them in a few weeks, then they would need a major update later around leopard...

Typically, big changes to hardware and to software don't happen at the same time. They want to keep hardware changes and software changes separated so that QA does not become a nightmare. Since iMac is due for an update, it will get an update within the next 1-2 months. Leopard update will be in October and the next round of hardware will be out in January - my guess.
They've been working on taking over the world with the iphone... please forgive Steve's agenda of world domination. After the iphone is in full swing I'm sure they'll equalize the focus on all Apple products.
Why? Far as I know, Intel won't be releasing any new applicable processors between now and October, so an update now or closer to the Leopard release would have the same configuration. There's really no reason to have to wait until closer to Leopard for an iMac update that I can see.
I'm guessing they will be sooner rather than later. I very very nearly ordered a 24 inch imac last night but when i seen the shipping time was 2-3 weeks just cos i opted for the 750GB hard disk opted to see it out, if im gonna hav e to w8 2-3 weeks thought ill take the chance see if new models are introduced
I was expecting the same delay as the 500GB drive, which it was on the UK store not too long ago
UPDATE: 500GB Drive on us and uk store now only delays shipping 3 days. Looks like most supplies are plentiful and mid-late summer is accurate.

This means that the new imac will ship with Tiger. In other words, before october, before the introduction of Leopard. Why else would they integrate the new drivers.
Agreed, new iMacs before October...probably July/August based on other rumours and need to get them out before new USA school starts

back on topic i agree that theyd bring the imacs out around that time. that way people will still be forced (eventually) into buying leopard and making just that little more profit. but im sure a lot of the mac population would be willing to pay for it
i kno i would!Think about it from Apple's point of view...if they wait till october and release imacs and leopard together they will have lower sales until then as people are beginning to wait.
but...
If they released imacs in next two weeks and coupled it with the whole "back to school" promotion they will boost sales in the summer. Also, half these people will probably pay for leopard as a separate item gaining even more money for Apple. It sounds a perfect time for Apple to release them.

Paris Apple Expo is Early Fall Tuesday-Saturday September 25-29 this year.
That's as close as they can get to the Leopard release and still be in September - Apple Expo's been mid-September in years past. Perhaps that will be the launch event for the Widescreen Multi-touch Video iPod as well as the European iPhone launch - if it's gonna happen this year? I have no idea.

My own reason for wanting Leopard has nothing to do with any of its visible features at all. Speed. Anyone with a 64-bit Mac has got to make the switch to Leopard as soon as it ships. It's simply gonna be way faster - period.

These are not predictions. These are just my BEST GUESSes how I think the Summer releases will unfold. I could certainly be all wrong. Please no one accuse me of predicting anything. I have zero inside info. Just trying to think like Phil Schiller is thinking.

Yes I think Apple will want to milk all the publicity it can focus on the iPhone for the first 5 weeks post launch. They will also want to wait for Intel's radical price drop in the cost of their Core 2 Duo and Quad processors scheduled for the end of July. And they will have their hands full coping with all of the server glitches that may come up once a multitude of iPhones are deployed.
So that would leave the August-September Mid to Late Summer window available for new iMacs, new Mac Pros and yes even new Santa Rosa MacBooks with the long awaited better integrated graphics processor and a 4GB ram capacity after the Sunday September 16th end of the "Buy a Mac and get a Free iPod" promotion all in time for display at and additional publicity from the Paris Apple Expo a week and a half later.
Zactly. Leverage all the iPhone publicity into the next generation of iMacs & Mac Pros. Perhaps even a new line where the mini is floundering now. Not expecting, just wondering how much longer they can keep selling 1.5 year old Core Duo Macs.
Only the above reasons. All the new hardware needs to be laid out before October so the sales of Leopard can take center stage in Apple's 5 ring circus - 1-OS X, 2-Macs, 3-iPods, 4-iPhones and 5-
TVs.

I don't see it happening in July as Intel's price drops don't happen until end of July - unless of course Apple can get special treatment to buy at the lower price earlier which is not out of the question. So I'm thinking the iPhone publicity juggernaut will not be waning until August when the prices are officially lower and Apple can build a huge backlog of supply to meet the pent up demand including that of students who wisely waited until the last possible moment to buy their '07-'08 school year Macs.
No doubt. Academic price is only $75 so barrier to the Leopard entry is very nominal. Way too many must-have features in Leopard to not want to upgrade in any event - not the least of which is completely under the hood. I'd venture to say that what is under the hood in Leopard is a bigger change to the foundation of OS X than in any previous upgrade. Seems like a fair call.
New MBPs so soon makes me think it might be worth waiting in case this happens.
I think we may also see an Apple BT GPS device, perhaps a small unit or even a watch. This will be to lever off the Google Maps for iPhones and MacBook(Pros), and hopefully the new widescreen iPods.
Mac Minis need a revamp or to be dropped I think. I would like to see them stay, but more AppleTVed.
I still think after Leopard or with it we might see an ultra portable MacBook (Pro).
pretty tight. very similar to current one's with a little sleaker lines smoother. and of course like they said. Thinner.

I usually never post predictions or stuff like this, but i have this odd feeling that the new iMac will rear it's pretty head sometime in the next week. I think apple will leverage iphone traffic within the apple store to sell the new iMac too.

I think with the 8-core MacPro option, there should be at least a 4-core iMac option too! Maybe with this new revision, they put a quad in the 24

No quad-core exists that will go into the iMac and won't for another year or so. It's one of a few major compromises they had to make for the all in one form factor.
Not a chance. If they weren't making a profit off them, they wouldn't be selling the desktops. Imagine the Apple store with a few laptops and ipods dotted about - it would hardly draw people in off the street.
I agree. there's no way they would drop all of their desktops. especially a good overall package like the imac. I think the imac is their best selling desktop too. the price is about right... well a little much, but you know.
Anyway, as far as quad core, not a chance yet.
Also, I too find it hard to beleive they're still using core duo's in Mac's TODAY. that's rediculous and should be rectified. I think if they stuck Core 2 Duo's in the Mac Mini's they would see a sales increase. Also a price drop would be great for such a small and ill-equipped Mac. It's only logical that they do that in order for them to save the Mini... which is another conversation all together.
