- Apple guy at CompUSA just gave me a "wink and a nod" the other day when I asked about whether to buy now or wait for the new iMac. But he may have just been flirting with me.

You'll have to post a pic of yourself, then, so we can tell if he would have been flirting with you or not. ;)

I'm just wondering if they'll just beef up the existing ones slightly in the next week or so and save the 'stunning industrial design' until post Leopard?

If they only do a slight speed-bump, or small upgrade and wait until leopard to update the whole line... I will be... be... :)     :p ;) :D :apple: ...

I think that sums it up!

It would be really strange if they let resellers run dry just because they have a hard time getting the parts. Which parts could that possibly be?

Considering the availability of the iMac reported here, it shouldn't be more than 1-2 weeks before we'll see an update.
But the timing seems rather strange to me. With all this hype around the iPhone, a new iMac wouldn't get much attention. Perhaps it's so ugly they want to draw attention away from it? :D

Everyone seems to forget that Apple actually did run out of previous generation iMacs prior to introducing the G5 iMac.

Maybe it will have a built-in iPod/iPhone dock, originally rumored for the Mac Mini. Which would be great because it would free up one USB port.

I certainly hope there won't be one. But if there is I hope it's well hidden.
I'd rather see something like eSATA.

i bought mine the day the newer c2d versions came out... so i will probably sell it close to the update mark and upgrade i guess... how radical r these changes? totally new design?

has to be new designs

there is no reason for apple to wait this long just to update the current design to SR chipsets.

They could have done that late may then updated the design with leopard.

Next Year???

The first leg is the Mac business, which Steve addressed by saying that they have the "best Macs" in the new product pipeline ever right now, and that the stuff coming out in the next year is "off the charts."

Next year? NO!

I still think it would make more sense to save the brand new iMacs until after Leopard, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first quarter of 08 that they appear. My guess is that they're working on using flash memory instead of hard drives, although I could be well wide of the mark! If they're so 'off the charts', they really should have some innovation we've never seen before.

However, the current iMac is now outspecced by the MacBook Pro and cannot remain that way until early 08. There has to be some sort of upgrade before then - just a CPU speed bump and newer graphics chip. A black iMac would fit the bill of there being something visual to persuade potential purchasers.

Minor product upgrades don't necessarily warrant that much attention or hype. They tend to appear on the front of the Apple site for a week or 2 and quietly appear in the store. A minor iMac upgrade wouldn't be given much of a fanfare by Apple I don't think. They save that for the truly new products - iPhone, Mac Mini, Apple TV.

I think it may be to do with supplies, product roadmaps and maximising profit. The timing of everything and transition of product production takes a lot of planning when you've got such complex production lines to manage.

Well, Steve was (I assume) referring to the entire line of computers. So within the next year, it's all going 'off the charts.'

That could include:

New iMac (in the next month)
New redesigned Mac Pros
MacBook/MacBook Pros with flash memory that is supported by the SR chipset
A new Mac Mini (or something to replace it)
Maybe even an entirely new line.

So it's not just iMacs. There's plenty to roll out over the next year to fulfill that and still bring new iMacs in the next few weeks.

He also said at MWSF 07 that this would be a great year for Macs. So far its been fairly average.

I'd say below average. Minor MacBook bump, MacBook Pro switching to SR, and 8 core offered in Mac Pro... all of which are small updates. And that's all, no other changes to any Macs :(

First, why does it make more sense to wait to introduce new iMacs? If Apple releases them now, it can sell customers the iMacs now and Leopard in late October, for an additional profit. If Apple releases them after Leopard, then customers buying them will not be purchasing Leopard separately.

Second, 2008 will be too early for entirely flash-based consumer models. For MacBook Mini tablets, maybe, but not iMacs.

Agreed. Apple need to really turn things around with Macs if they are going to keep the momentum up

You're working on the assumption they're sitting there waiitng at Apple, all finished, ready to be launched!

I am trying to decide if I'm going to wait for the new IMacs. I have a PC and I am so excited about getting a Mac. The waiting would be easier if I knew they were coming out for sure in the next month!
