I'm scanning the web, and while people mention the call, no one is outraged over that interception by Polamalu that was overturned. Was anyone else utterly baffled by this call? Anyone agree/disagree?

I agree it was a bad call (but am also a Steelers fan:) ). I can kind of almost see where they were coming from. The question for the officials seems to have been if it had been a regular reception, that is if a reciever had caught the ball, would it have been a catch or an incomplete pass? They were saying that for a catch to be deemed a reception, the player has to have both knees off the ground while in full possesstion of the football. Of course, what is screwy about that is that it would have been a reception had Polamalu just stayed on the ground. Basically, it's like getting let off on a technicality...So it may be the rulebook right call, but a bad call nonetheless. For me it was a 21-10 win.

So while we're on it, don't you think that the NFL has made game rules a bit overly complex and just a little, erm, anti-fun? Aside from the serious ones, why not allow proper end-zone celebrations? Too many damaged balls? I was out of the country when things like this were changed, but I think it was explained to me that the celebrations were banned because they were deemed 'unprofessional.' hmmm.. seemed part of the profession to me...

I hate to blame it on one player because I really don't think it's possible to do that but the best move Carolina ever made was by releasing Moose and letting him come to the Bears. I'm not saying they would have won if they would have gotten Plaxico or traded for Santana Moss but he sure didn't help any.

Though IMHO the Bears lost today because their defense suddenly decided to stink.

First off, also agree with the complaints about Polamalu's interception and I think the football gods agreed since I can't think of another reason for Vanderjagt's kick to go so extremely awry!

The second potential dodgy call; Gage's fumble that wasn't in the Bears game was actually a good call. The guy made the catch and his knee was on the ground when the ball came out so fair dos to the refs for spotting that one. Still don't understand the rationale for the Polamalu one though.

As for the No Fun League; you can blame the St Louis Rams for that one. Guys can still celebrate individually - see some of Chad Johnson's this year - they just can't have orchestrated team dances. TO and Joe Horn's escapades with pens and phones also led to the crackdown. The score should be the highlight; not the celebration after all.

Yeah, well, he's just one of the best NFL coaches right now. And he just beat who was maybe considered one of the best in Belicheck.

BB didn't fumble the ball or throw picks?? MS just calls blitz on every down?

so I have no rooting interest so now all I root for is some awesome games, good reffing, and exciting football. well I have to root against the panthers ... they knocked us out.

With Indy and the Bears out i think it just sealed the deal for Seattle. I bet they are all getting their fingers sized right now for that ring, and Holmgren is dusting off a place on his mantle to put that SB Trophy.

Go Seahawks!

now it's seattle's bowl to lose and they could cement their choke status in nfl history by not getting a ring this year

but the other three teams have nothing to lose since many didn't think they would get this far...some may have made a case for carolina, though

I think that's a bit premature. The Panthers ripped one of the best D's in the league, the Steelers contained the best offense (and best all around team) in the league, and the Broncos beat the most enigmatic team in the league. All four teams playing next week deserve to be there.

I dislike both AFC teams so I hope that one of the NFC teams wins it all this year. I pick Seattle to go the distance.

I hope Denver beats the Steelers....I hate the Steelers. But to be honest they look really strong.

I'm glad you hate the Steelers, and next week you can join the Cincy and Indy fans sitting at home asking themselves "what happened??"

All season on this thread I've been talking about how the Steelers are the team in the AFC, and all the talk was about the Colts, the Pats, the Broncos..bla bla bla...that's fine, the Steelers don't get any respect in the Media either...even after the game all the talk was about how the Colts lost... not how the Steelers won...whatever...

The Steelers are playing their best football..RIGHT NOW...and right now is when it counts...The Broncos better be ready...i was so happy to see the Pats get beat, and now hopefully they can break up that roster and go back to being average, or just go away...

Be a Steeler fan....it's much more fun....

LET's go BURGH!!!

:D :D

the colts simply woke up too late and it's such a shame for such a talented team to not even make the afc championship game

This sounds almost exactly like what happened to Denver in '96. Started the season 12-1, rested their starters the last few games, came out flat in the first playoff game and got upset by Jacksonville. They learned from that mistake and of course won the SuperBowl the next 2 years, so maybe the Colts still have some hope. ;)

Not much of a football fan myself (NBA for me), but I grew up in Colorado, so go Broncos! :D

not me. i wanted to see steelers vs. pats pretty bad. i'm afraid the steelers won't take denver as seriously as they would have taken new england; happened in '94 against the chargers, '95 against the colts, '97 against the broncos, '01 against the patriots, etc.

i actually think denver is the better team, and matches up against the steelers really well. neither team will be able to run, so it's going to be decided in the air and they match up well across the board there.

i'm hoping, hoping, hoping they can pull it off, but it's going to a hard fought, close game. i can't wait.

While we're on the subject of weird referee calls...

Can anybody...anybody...explain that bizarre "offside" incident? Several Colts jumped the line of scrimmage before the snap, which usually indicates they were drawn offside by someone moving on the Steelers.

If one of the Steelers did flinch, then the penalty should have been on them. If the Steelers didn't flinch (hard to believe, given the number of Colts who jumped, but for the sake of argument), then the penalty should've been on the Colts. As it was, the refs announced there was no penalty, which clearly befuddled everyone. Even the announcers were beside themselves trying to figure that one out.

That's like having two cars crash at an intersection, one car going north and one car going west, and the cop deciding that both of them had the green light.

BTW, the NFL is now admitting that the ref got the Polamalu call wrong.

Their mistake almost certainly wouldn't have resulted in any difference in the final result of the game, but damn...seems almost every playoff season one of these "elite" refs chosen to work the playoff games makes some kind of boo-boo like this.

Not if they were blitzing and trying to anticipate with the snap count.

It's good thing that the Steelers played well enough to survive such a blown call.

One of the steelers guy did flinch and that made several colts jumped..they showed it on the clips. That games was just "interesting" the flinching, the interception not being called. The back and foward of that game was killer but i think it was served with the final kick that killed thousands of colt fans.

One of the Steelers DID flinch... Faneca, the left tackle (I think). But the refs missed it.

The officiating SUCKED this weekend, on all sides of the ball.

I'll tell you the other thing that sucked this weekend.

Peyton Manning's comments after the game. For once, we could actually see emotion as he said that all he could do was try again.

But then came the statement that implied that he always played hard and that it was was his O'line's fault. Really? What about those overthrows when they did give you protection? Not impressed...

And while he was praising Vangerjagt by saying that he usually made those kicks - was anyone else waiting for him to call him a liquored up kicker again? ;)

yea i saw the anger in his face...like he was ready to bust a tear. imagine how the kicker felt or still feeling.....he might not be able to walk out of his house.

Would they ever blame a STAR QB for the loss?

Bless
