journey back in time...

well, i found this from the 'wayback machine':

from August 2006 mac pro webpage - touting the X1900 card:

August 2006 Mac Pro

it's nice that I can use the Wayback Machine to find out old this card really is.

wow.

well, i don't game, but need a robust vid card to handle composite work. from what i've read, the X1900 has been around since last August, so we're creeping in on a year here, and that's a bit long to go without upgrading.

out of principle, i simply won't pay top-dollar for a year old card. if they want to offer the X1900 on a lower system, fine. but at least offer the latest card in the 8-core machine.

The card has been around in the Mac since last August, that is true.

However, ATI released that card in January of 2006!!!! It's a year and a half old!

And to the people saying that "Apple doesn't cater to gamers" "It's not a machine for gaming, blah blah blah" - well, then why do they offer the x1900xt in the first place??? The 7300GT is an entry-level, crippled card. the 4500 is a workstation-class 3d/CAD card. The x1900xt is a gaming card.

It's older than that even, 1900XT cards came out in January 2006, 7300GTs in May 2006 and FX 4500 July/August 2005. I also see where you are comming from completely, even if a 1900XT was more than enough for you it's a little off to be paying "$400" for it ($250 upgrade + Apple's $150 valuation of the base card) when there are much better options available for windows/linux users. I don't think for many it's even the cost, just the age of the card and that it can't be far away from recieving an overhaul. Hopefully Apple's GPU revisions have a little more depth than an 8300GT, 2900XT and FX 4600 being offered.

The X1900XT is still decent card for many tasks, the 4500 offers real time rendering and other things cards of it's class have, but it isn't needed over the X1900XT for everything requiring heavy 3D work and it offers a midrange and affordable solution for such tasks. Apple don't cater to gamers because they offer no machine for them, nor do they offer the range or newest technology in GPUs.

Modern Video Card With A Modern Logic Board Please

Glad we're back. Yes this is my thinking as well.

Yes I agree. The Vid Card, The Logic Board, even perhaps the Clovertown processor itself all seem so outdated. If only Apple can score early 3GHz Harpertowns soon enough along with dibbs on all the Stoakley logic boards coming off the line this summer. But I'm probably dreaming to think this will happen before November.

MM - don't you say that.

don't you EVER say that...

i had a project this weekend where it would've been really nice to have both 3ds max open and after effects at the same time... but alas, my old dell couldn't handle it... i'm getting desperate waiting for this update...

The X1900 is a PIECE OF CRAP. Read the reviews of it on gamers forums.

It overheats easily, has numerous hardware bugs, and I'll be glad when Apple offers something I can replace it with.

There's a reason why Apple had to 'detune' the thing.

Apple's been having tons of reports about it too, they just delete them from their forums.

Trust me, I own an X1900, I've written articles about the X1900, and I get lots of email about it too. It sucks.

Apart from the hardware bugs, it's also not DirectX 10 compatible and it's a generation behind... seems like a side-note, but it should be at the forefront (18 months is way too old for a video card).

Most of ATI's cards are good, but their software (drivers/utils) suck...this is why I stick with nVidia, but with Apple we have no choice :/

Not that I agree or disagree with you.. I'm no expert on video cards - but it would seem to me that a quote above (noting the word 'gamers') isn't going to hold much weight in this forum.

Personally, I'm very happy to have my MacPro on the way... and it's relieving to know it'll be here soon.

Oh! Could it be! Even the best of us are buckling!

It feels good doesn't it MM? I think the two of us came out remarkably close in each of our deals... though your monitor is nicer than mine, I will now have a matching pair of 24" dells. What was the final price?

:)

Oh snap!

Actually that was a great deal, even if mps are updated tomorrow!

Congrats mm!

You have to be kidding - did MM purchase a "FrankenMac" that he has been bashing & bitching about since.......?

He sure did :( :( :(

BUT...... He got all THAT for $2900???? 2.66 Mac Pro, 5 gigs ram, 1.3 TB hard drive space, AND a 23" Apple Cinema Display.

I am floored. Both because MM buckled and because he got such an AMAZING deal.

I might have jumped on that had I seen the thread. Oh well......

I shall continue to persevere.

(....it just occurred to me. Now that MultiMedia caved in and bought the Mac Pro, that means that the Mac Pro will be UPDATED ANY DAY NOW!!! woooooo hoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Despite all your experience with the card, all I can go on is it's technical specifications as I know not what percentage have had problems with it. So as an option in the line up, it's technical specs and price put it as an appropriate midrange card for the purpose of my point. And of course Apple's next midrange offering could have the same problems in the same or worse frequency for all we know.

It's like we were all waiting for it to rain--him most of all--and he washed his car.

It'll be tomorrow, for sure.

Noooooooo

Sad day when Multimedia caves in! I was thinking about him on this post. I guess I spoke to soon. Only a few people still standing!

i thought he said they were over priced and outdated ?

and now he's gone and bought one..

'don't do what i do , do what i say'

i call that trolling.

heh Well, he was being realistic I suppose. Sadly, after all of this time I could never give in. He probably obsessed so much looking at pictures and articles so much, that he just gave in!
Doesn't phase me one bit though. I guess my unboxing will be a unique one :D

I'll Still Buy Harpertown Stoakley-Seaburg When It Ships • I May Have Been Punk'd

I may have been Punk'd. uNext has failed to communicate with me directly yet since he told me we had a deal last night. Plus his email registered with MacRumors is bogus and bounces back undeliverable.
He got a used dual-dual 2.66, not the dual-quad 3.00.
Only because it was such a really good deal.

I wasn't trolling. I am still buying the 8-core Harpertown in Stoakley-Seaburg as soon as it ships. I just wanted to get a good deal in the mean time so I could get my feet wet into an Intel Mac Pro. But right now I feel Punked.

heh Well, he was being realistic I suppose.

Yes, realistic. He [maybe] now has a fast quad MacIntel - one that he got at a great price, and one that will be a big leap forward from his PowerPC Mac.

When the "real" octo comes out, he can get the real deal and have 12 fast Intel CPUs crunching his multi-threaded workflow.

Or, maybe he'll wait until Nehalem or something better in the future.

I suspect he'll wait - since he's been getting by until now with an old PowerPC it must have been a case of *wanting* more speed, not really *needing* more speed. The boost to Intel speeds should make things easier (especially if he runs the PPC quad as well).
