How Can I Use Both Quad G5 & Mac Pro To Compress One File Together At The Same Time?

Yes, realistic. He [maybe] now has a fast quad MacIntel - one that he got at a great price, and one that will be a big leap forward from his PowerPC Mac.

When the "real" octo comes out, he can get the real deal and have 12 fast Intel CPUs crunching his multi-threaded workflow.

Or, maybe he'll wait until Nehalem or something better in the future.

I suspect he'll wait - since he's been getting by until now with an old PowerPC it must have been a case of *wanting* more speed, not really *needing* more speed. The boost to Intel speeds should make things easier (especially if he runs the PPC quad as well).
Yes it is a case of wanting more speed for compression now. Tired of waiting longer than I may have to wait for the Quad Mac Pro to do compression work all the time.

How do I learn to use them both at the same time Aiden? Is this a Compressor trick? Or is it another application I've never used?

Glad we're back. Yes this is my thinking as well.

Yes I agree. The Vid Card, The Logic Board, even perhaps the Clovertown processor itself all seem so outdated. If only Apple can score early 3GHz Harpertowns soon enough along with dibbs on all the Stoakley logic boards coming off the line this summer. But I'm probably dreaming to think this will happen before November.

you should have that as your signature , mm

I'm not sure - but there are some options.
  1. If you have more than one file, do them on the different boxes. (The typical "multi-threaded workflow" scenario)
  2. Software that's written for "render farms" will often allow dissimilar systems as long as the application runs on both architectures (does Xgrid support farms of both PPC and x86?)

But mostly, if you have two big jobs to do, run them on both at the same time.

My 4-Core Deal Fell Through

So Multimedia, you have a 4-Core Mac Pro in your office now?
No, it turned out to be a phantom sale. The seller uNext went dark after he told me we had a deal. So I'm back in the waiting game again. That was very weird for him to not even explain to me why he ceased communication. I'm still wondering if he met with sudden death or not.

I don't believe Xgrid does but Compressor with QMaster does support both if you have the Universal version. You can set up que's and offload the work to a second computer for rendering 3D graphics or compressing video while you continue working on your main setup.

I'd Rather Return To Suffering With The Rest Of The Waiters For Another Month Or Two

actually , that IS a shame :(

maybe you can get one of those apple refurbs to tide you over ?
That was the second tricked out system I almost had for a bargain. If I was going to pull the trigger on a base refurbed system, it would have to be the original 8-core. At only $1200 above the 2.66GHz 4-core, it's now a bargain. $550/core for the 4-core and only $425/core for the 8-core. I still have a feeling an all 8-core lineup is coming next at current 4-core prices. It's just a question of how soon Stoakley logic boards are going into mass production. With the Intel Developer Forum coming on the eve of the September 23rd Autumnal Equinox from September 18-20 in San Francisco and then Paris Apple Expo the following week September 25-29, something's got to give.

Good thing you didn't get the Quad 2.66, sure it is loaded, but it isn't that much faster than your Quad G5 that you have right now.

Octo is your best option, you can either go refurb or wait patiently.

Dual Harpertowns In Stoakley-Seaburg Seems Not Too Far Off Now

Thanks for that. Good to know I might have been disappointed. While I agree the 8-core refurb is a good deal, with us down to only 60 days 'til those big conferences and 90 days 'til Leopard ships, I think I'll revert to waiting patiently for the next big thing. If Harpertown is really shipping this year and not next, my dream Mac Pro is now dual Harpertown in Stoakley-Seaburg. I know this may look like I'm further sliding into the future. But from my point of view it looks like just continuing to wait for the complete shift to Intel's next complete set of chips as well as Apple's next new OS. I think I can figure out how to pass the time with this old Quad G5 meantime.

August is likely to give us something to chew on the iMac front. I'm thinking Apple will start using a Core 2 Quad processor in all of them. But that's purely my own conjecture and hope for the iMac crowd.

September has got to bring something after the iPod give away ends. And the October 26 (my guess) Leopard launch will really lead the way toward a new set of fun times this Autumn. Meanwhile I've got to get a life. ;)

"There's no doubt that both versions of the Mac Pro are faster than the G5 Quad-Core running Universal Binary apps like iMovie, Final Cut Pro, etc.

As you can see from the four UB tests we ran in this session, the Mac Pro 2.66GHz was as much as 62% faster than the Quad-Core G5/2.5GHz. The Mac Pro 3.0GHz was as much as 85% faster."

"Compressor 3.0 MPEG-2 Encode:
  • Mac Pro Octo 3GHz: 1min 3sec
  • Mac Pro Quad 3GHz: 1min 14sec
  • PM G5 2.5GHz: 1min 23sec
"

Not Earthshakingly Faster Anyway

Those numbers certainly don't inspire excitement. I have hope the next gen hardware + Leopard will make it a bigger leap from Quad G5 to Top 8-core Mac Pro.

Wow, that stinks. At least you didn't send him any money.

At any rate, welcome back to TWC

The Waiter's Club !! :p:p

However Long It Takes

We really do know the what it will be - except the port setup. So I'm prepared to wait for however long it takes them to put it together. I'm sure they want to do it ASAP given the long time first edition has been around. Really probably comes down to Intel's ability to deliver parts in quantity.

Good points. Add Leopard in October.
Maybe the new Mac Pro will be here earlier than expected.

p.s. Sorry to hear about your Mac Pro buying experience.

...............................................................Speedmark 4.5.............................Adobe Photoshop CS2
............................................................ OVERALL SCORE..................................... SUITE
Mac Pro/2.66GHz (Standard)...............................299................................................1:25
13-inch MacBook Core Duo/1.83GHz.....................154.................................................2:53

You're right.. going from a Quad PowerMac to a Quad MacPro may not be a huge leap... but going from image processing on my macbook to on my new macpro... well, the very idea inspires a great deal of excitement in me. :)

so , you guys really think a 20%* 'jump' in performance is worth waiting for ?

i doubt you'll even notice it in real world useage

*prob more like 10% , the cpu isn't such a big deal as is made out on this board

I just want to put a better video card in my Mac Pro. I've been very disappointed with the 7300 (bought it stock) and the Radeon just seems over priced to me at this point. Give me a new card that can output to a TV with the $20 converter and I'd probably be happy. I can't see paying another $300+ just to get S-Video out with an older (loud) card.

Waiting is the worst sport ever

I don't know--have you ever seen films of that Eskimo cheek-pulling sport? I think I'd rather wait for the next best thing from Apple (while using my old machine in the meantime), which seems far less painful.

my x1900 is linked to my tv via a dvi to hdmi adaptor , s-video is an out of date interconnect imo , maybe you should upgrade your telly ?

i still don't see quite what people think the x2900 will deliver that the 1900 won't ( in real world pro apps / real world every day useage ) , especially considering the laughable state of mac gaming

then again , i wouldn't say no to a blu ray drive option , especially since fcp etc support the new hi def formats

who cares about gaming.

i want a card in my machine that isn't a year and a half old.

apple, if you're going to put a 1 1/2 year old card in your 'pro workstation', then at least don't charge top-dollar for it.

oh, and while you're at it, why don't you put more than 1GB of ram in your 'pro workstation', so i can actually run professional video and 3d apps?

oh yeah, that's right - i'm supposed to buy additional ram immediately after dropping $4300 for a mac pro. that's right... what was i thinking?
