So what exactly is Congress's job then. If they don't look into overseeing private business who will. They certainly won't police themselves. The NFL is not above the law because they are a sport.

Nobody seems to complain when Congress goes after Microsoft tho.
That's because Microsoft is a huge juggernaut that crushes all competition without mercy.
Wait....

Seriously though, do you really think many people here are going to side with Microsoft over any issue? Most people here are biased against Microsoft.
I'm a Pats fan so I'm biased for them. If this senator accused the Colts of pumping in electric sound into the stadium during their games, I wouldn't mind so much.

Of course you don't the evidence was destroyed.;)

It's not illegal to put a camera on the sidelines. It's only against the NFL rules.

Congress's job is to make laws. They are the legislative branch of government.

The Attorney General and Department of Justice (parts of the executive branch) are the ones who are supposed to enforce the laws.

Heh. I can't resist: The ENTIRE executive branch is supposed to "take care that the laws be faithfully executed." ;)

Congress is well within its rights to hold hearings to determine what laws are needed, how well existing laws are working, etc.

In any event, what's your prediction for the game?

Wow,since people (haters) want to keep pummeling this dead horse clear through the ground to the South Pole:
Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." It later says: "All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

Recording an opponent's signals isn't a violation..WHERE you record them from (camera placement) is a violation..
Anybody wishing to debate the semantics of signal stealing,go right ahead...

So the only question is why did the NFL destroy the tapes so fast without an investigation. What did they not want to get out.

Considering the tapes that were destroyed were from the 06 regular season (Pats lost to the Colts in the AFCCG,Jan 07) and from the 07 preseason,I have no possible idea what could be gained from those tapes..And let's not forget that the Pats lost to Denver in the Divisional round in Jan 06 (after the 05 season),mainly due to the fact that the Pats committed 5 turnovers in that game (so much for videotaping the opponent's defensive signals). Maybe the video guy took that game off

The whole taping thing was so overblown it's crazy. It's like saying 'you can look at me all you like, just don't try to remember what I look like.' It really is semantic. Was it technically against the rules? Yes. Is it a big deal AT ALL? no. I suppose it made a good news story though. It certainly doesn't make the Patriots any more devious than the other teams.

The tapes probably show video from the sidelines of a game. I'm just guessing. Not exactly 'bloody glove' valuable.

I honestly have no idea about the score. It's going to be close though.

I am predicting one thing: Plaxico Burress getting jacked up by Rodney Harrison sometime within the first few series for the G-men.

Despite my prediction, I can't figure out if it is going to be close or a blowout. I can see arguments for both, just as I can see an argument for the Giants winning. In fact, I can see this being a Tampa/Oakland type game.

I like it! :D

i would like to see that ;)

umm.....he isn't
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2631666
For the second time in three years, Patriots safety Rodney Harrison tops Sports Illustrated's list of dirtiest players in the NFL.

Of the 361 NFL players polled during the preseason, 23 percent of them pointed to Harrison. Second on the list were Joey Porter of the Steelers and Jon Runyan of the Eagles at 6 percent each.
Granted that story is 2 years old, but it isn't old news.

you're a saints fan too?

Long suffering.......

You know, while I'll benefit from seeing the game, I'm not happy that the Saints are giving up another home game. The Giants are due to give up a home game - they got one from the Saints after Katrina and another since the majority of 'neutrals' in London went Giants last year...

If I go to the game, I will be a Saint... although there's already some talk that a group of us will go to NO instead.... and watch it there! :p

That's the spirit!! I'm headed to a few games this season too. If you make it across the pond, MacRumors international meetup!!

I thought that was odd at the time. I'd have rather seen an investigation and get it out the way rather than the weird, ah well, it's all ok so dump it. The only non-paranoid-Pats-hating reason I could come up was that when they looked at it, it was such a can of worms across all the teams that they decided that opening it was going to be messy. I'm guessing that it's not just the Pats who were taping games.

I am curious as to when taking video cameras to game started being allowed. It never used to be since I recall having to sneak one in most of the time.

I'll make it to London and possibly one or two in SF. But you never know, something else just might come up. The problem, these days, is finding NFL watching buddies to travel with - the old crew that we used to do NFL roadtrips, watching 4 to 6 games over 2 weeks, are now all settled down. :(

Exactly which laws were broken here? ;)

Anyway, more sour grapes.

Personally I think this is going to yet another incredibly close Pats (win) Superbowl.

First, how do you know unless you investigate?

Second, a law need not be "broken" for Congress to have the right to investigate a subject. Since the NFL is "interstate commerce," it is subject to Congressional power. And Congress is well within its rights to investigate something the size of the NFL. Whether it is a good idea or not is up to the constituents of the Congresspeople involved.

Finally, I hope the Pats win and complete the perfect season. I'd much rather listen to them than to the Dolphins. Go away already!

Would a Pats loss be the biggest upset in sports history? I don't think many people give the Giants much of a shot. Altho I think they have plenty a shot. Would it still be considered a huge upset?
