Getting away from the Pats/Colts....
I'm very happy right now because the lowly Browns beat a decent team, won three in a row for the first time since 2001, and are now sitting at 2nd place in the AFC North at 5-3. On top of that, the game was very exciting. Holmgren should never have gone for that 4th-and-1 in the overtime period...
We who live by Lake Erie have been so downtrodden for so long that it's difficult to remind ourselves that we're not
that good yet. Sure, we're 5-3 and ranked 9th in the league (as I write this), but we've played some pretty crappy teams (Miami, 0-8; St. Louis, 0-8).
Talk that the Browns have "arrived" is premature. We're so used to 4-12 season records around here that a couple of weeks ago, when we went 3-3, folks around here were so ecstatic at the improvement that you kinda started to hear a little swagger in their voices. I had to remind more than one fan that, yes, it was a great improvement, but .500 ball is nothing you can
swagger about yet.
Still, they've got a lot of stuff this year they've never had before: a very good QB, a marquee RB, a solid O-line, and an offensive coordinator who can actually draw up a winning game plan. Just wait'll we address the defense this off-season....
Too bad about the Pats, though.
