I think it's more "When you don't have a passing attack as good as the Patriots do...."

It's simply amazing what they've been able to do with the state of their running game (which is far from awful, but also not a big time one).

The people who say the Patriots have no running game or the "Where is Maroney? Is he hurt?" people don't know anything about football (not you btw, just saying). The guys on BCN were talking about this too. The Patriots rushing game is ranked 8th in the league out of 32 teams. It's better than 75% of the teams in the league. If they want to run the ball, then can. But with one of the best passing games in recent memory, they don't have to.

What they do depends on a ton of factors: who they're playing, gameplan, down, time in the game, position on the field, score of the game, etc. The Steelers have the #1 defense in the NFL, but they were missing a key part of the secondary because Polamalu is out. So you're going to try to take advantage of this weakness. You can't run on the Steelers because they're always keeping at least 7 guys in the box and are always blitzing. That's why their rush defense is ranked #1 in the league.

Brady & McDaniels drew up the game plan to exploit the Steelers weaknesses (Anthony Smith lolz, burned for 3 touchdowns) and it worked to perfection. Look at that perfectly executed play-action by Brady to get Smith to commit to the run. Moss ran right by him and got the 63 yard touchdown pass. Same thing on the flea-flicker.

Best part of this whole thing was Belichick after the game. He NEVER takes shots at the other team's players, but when asked about Smith he said "We've played against much better safeties than him."

Oh, and one other thing about Maroney: DID YOU SEE HIM MOVE THAT PILE 11 YARDS? OWNAGE. He's got the skills and if they want/need to, they can utilize them.

in other news, watching this performance by the Ravens disgusts me. They obviously have some talent, as evidenced by last week, and that makes this season all the more embarrassing for them. I mean, if they were just horrible then Ok, but they're not... they're just lazy whiners who got up for one game and mail it in the rest of the season. This looks nothing like the team that played the Pats to within an inch of their lives last week.

Steelers safety Anthony Smith just got nominated for the Mike & Mike in the Morning "Just Shut Up" award and will probably win it running away (pun intended!) this week. :D

i agree completely. i'm not even gonna watch the rest of that game

Jets and Fins should be easy... BUT haven't the hapless Dolphins ruined perfect seasons for other teams? I seem to think they have more than most.

The Giants could cause concern. But you never know which team will show up.

Yes, the Dolphins handed the 1985 Bears their only loss.

And that was the Raven's Super Bowl. They blew their load in that game and it wasn't enough (meltdown included). The Ravens have to face facts..Kyle Boller isn't the answer...
The 85 Fins also had Marino..This current team is beyond pathetic..Not to mention the fact that it will be in Foxboro in late December..

Other thoughts:

Defensive Player of the Game: Rodney Harrison

The defense really stepped up in the second half, playing aggressive hard hitting football like the Pats defense from the back-to-back Superbowl years. How about that stand on 4th & Goal from the 1 yard line. Awesome.

Since they lost Colvin, they haven't been able to do the substitution in the linebacking corps that they were doing before (5 guys playing 4 positions, especially so Bruschi and Seau didn't have to play tons of plays in a row). Tonight they played Rodney in sort of a hybrid linebacker/safety position.

They basically ran with the 3 lineman, 3 linebackers, Rodney, 2 cornerbacks, and 2 safeties. It was interesting and I thought it was a great defensive scheme by Belichick.

You can expect to see Rodney play more of a hybrid DB/LB from here on out. That started with him on Dallas Clark in the Colt's game in Nov.. He was all over the place today...

Do you think the Pats will have something special in store for Mangini and the Jets next week. Modern day NFL record for most points scored is 72.

It's going to be good.

I never cared about that handshake **** the media was making a huge deal out of last season, but I can't wait to see what happens after this game. lmao.

In other news, Kyle "I Should Have Been A" Boller has returned after a 3 quarter hiatus last week.

I think that Bellichik will redefine no mercy. The bad blood goes back to the Parcell move...The teams hate each other, the ownerships hate each other, head coaches hate each other etc...

I hope we run the score way up.

And then in the post game press conference, instead of doing his "what do you want me to do, kick a field goal?" ****, he just comes out to the podium and says "That was running up the score." :D

edit: speaking of running up the score, Peyton's doing it right now. ~45 yard TD pass to Anthony Gonzalez.. 44-7 now, 12:37 to go in the 3rd quarter. But you'll never hear about this in the media.

Yep, I agree with you completely. I would say that the Patriots CAN run if they need to, but with the quality of their passing attack they rarely need to. From the games of theirs that I have seen, I think their 8th place ranking is slightly deceptive, since they seem to amass rushing yardage once the game is effectively over. I've not seen too many of their games (4 or 5, I think), so I may well be wrong. My sense is that they are so good and so smart that they decide what they want to do rather than worrying about the other team, and use the run to help keep the defense guessing.

At this point, I think they've had the only close calls they're going to have. The only team that would concern me is Indy, because if they finally get everyone healthy they are the one team that could score with the Patriots.

Well of course..BUT...You won't hear any mention of "running up the score talk" when it comes to Saint Peyton and the holier than thou Colts..It will just be media ballwashing at nauseum about how Peyton is being "heroic" in overcoming the "major injury" situation the Colts are dealing with

that was sarcasm if you happened to miss that

So I guess we know what Anthony Smith is eating for dinner tonight:

To be fair...

The Colts have called off the dogs with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. What are they supposed to do, pull their starters after 20 minutes?

I've said the same thing about the Pats the whole season. What are you supposed to do when you're ahead by 30 with half the game to go? There's not really a protocol for that because it should never happen in the pros.
